Even if the lions win this game, to me they just lack something. I don’t know. They don’t have that killer instinct this year. Only early yes. But lacking hunger

They Do. It's a very open year and anyone can win it. None of the 'top' teams convince me.

Me watching Carlton play this week: "how TF did we lose to this rabble?!"

Me watching GWS play this week: "how TF did we lose to this rabble?!"

Me watching Brisbane play this week: "how TF did we lose to this rabble?!"

Me watching Saints play this week: "how TF did we lose to this rabble?!"

Everyone is crap and no one is consistent. Welcome to a poor league.

It's just about who hits form the last 6 weeks.

There aren't many better things in footy than seeing Zorko lose.

BT 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I've turned over to the Brisbane vs Melbourne match and the score was 82-81

Pickett has a snap but only a behind making it 82-82

Petty has a set shot but only registers a behind making it 82-83, now in favour of Melbourne

Aidan Johnson then soccer's through a goal off the ground and BT starts excitedly yelling,

"Melbourne have hit the front! Melbourne have hit the front"

They were already in front
Sounds to me like one of BT's finer moments, actually. After all, on this occasion he was seemingly only minutes behind the times whereas he's normally decades behind everyone else's experience of reality.

Didn't you say the league would be stronger this season? Maybe I have you mixed up with someone else.

The league has been weak for ages and that's why Geelong aiming to keep contending is a sound strategy. We were only a few things going right off playing in a grand final last year, pre-Smith.

You need your list to be healthy end of season, players to hit form at the right time and not to incur injuries in finals. About 7 teams are good enough to win it if that formula lines up.

What's your definition of a weak league or weak season? I mostly agree with you btw, just curious to know how you would weigh up the relative strength of different eras.

I think most objective observors would agree that the strongest the league has been in the 21st century in terms of top teams was 2009-2011. One of the greatest teams of all time (Thompson and Scott's Geelong), a Pies side that was near-unstoppable at times, and a St Kilda side that was probably the best non-flag winner there's ever been.

The worst standard single season of the 21st century was definitely 2016. Absolute garbage standard among the top teams that year, with the weakest premiership winners in living memory and a top four full of mediocrity.

In Chris Scott world, if they are all weak, conversely, they are all strong.
Anyone on any day, sounds good, but it's rare in multiples, like today.

Subjectively I just think the standard has been lower as diluted talent from the expansion clubs has reached peak and veteran age. 2016 onwards sounds about right, with some fluctuations up and down. Dimma did create a perfect finals side so you could at least say for every other team it was tough to climb the mountain 2017-2020.

When I talk about weak or strong I mean more in terms of the contending pack. On a given day it's probably harder to beat a randomly picked side - more so these 6th-15th types (as the bottom 3 have been pretty dire at times). Easier to topple one of the top few contenders. You used to have to finish top 4 to have a chance of making the grand final. Now you could argue you just need to qualify for finals and go on a good run at the right time.

There's some really nice (bittersweet now but nice all the same) 'Selwood boys' stuff on the 'net. Some things I've found

And this from Round 20, 2012 where three Selwoods (Adam and Scott for West Coast vs Joel for Geelong) take the field and Adam cannons right into Joel

EDIT: Found a further vid where Adam goes into a bit more detail on 'the hit' (starts at 1:06)

And of course THAT goal in the 2022 Grand Final win (apologies, the footage is missing a wider shot of Troy, Adam and Scott with Mum and Dad in the stands

Rest in Peace Troy and Adam Selwood

IIRC correctly Joel got a week for that push after his brother lined him up?
Remember being absolutely filthy

On its own, the charge of making unnecessary or unreasonable contact with an injured player wouldn't have got Joel suspended, but this was in the era of charges being worth a point value with points carrying over for 12 months -

The initial penalty of 80 demerit points was increased by 40 per cent to 112 because of Joel Selwood's four-game suspension during 2011.

An early plea would reduce that by 25 per cent to 84 points. It would also allow the Cats' leader to be available for seventh-placed Geelong's game against 10th-placed St Kilda on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

sorry to intrude but i wanted to send some love Joel and Scott's way and all the Selwood's just tragic
RIP Adam and Troy Selwood

Whole system was poor

I did have a chuckle at this which is from the MRO findings from yesterday's matches:

WAALITJ Marawar midfielder Brady Hough has been fined for bumping a hurt Rowan Marshall in the Eagles' win over Euro-Yroke on Sunday.

After Marshall was rushed into seeing his shot on goal go out on the full late in the third quarter at Optus Stadium, Hough bumped the ruck while he was on the ground holding his shoulder.

The Match Review Officer charged Hough with making "unreasonable or unnecessary contact with an injured player".

He has been fined $1500 which can be reduced to $1000 with an early plea.

There seems something fitting about that particular charge being pulled out this weekend from the WCE match
