HE CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!

Also can't have wildcards in a league with one division, call it what it is. Its a 10 team finals system in an 18 team competition which is embarrassingly stupid.
But considering the people at the top keep making these awful decisions who is surprised here.

Also next year when Tassie enters the league we will have to have a bye each week due to team numbers, so what happens with fixturing because at some point you risk a team finishing 4th, getting a bye, then having a pre-finals bye, then if they win the QF they get ANOTHER bye.

A team next year could have 2 games in 5 weeks as opposed to the currently unbalanced system.

Also shout out to scabs like Hutchy who have been pushing for this stupid wildcard system.
That risk could be considerably reduced by giving the wooden spoon team the final bye before the pre-finals bye, as they are unlikely to make 4th.

Or, hear me out, don't have a pre-finals bye, have a pre-GF bye, and don't have a ****ing wildcard round.

I absolutely despite the idea of wildcard round. And I'm disgusted (yet not surprised) by the naked spin that the AFL has put out around the whole initiative.

They would have some scintilla of credibility in instituting this horrific idea if they could at least admit that it's yet another of their craven grabs for cash. Yet we get all this nonsense trying to suggest that it's what the fans want and that more 'finals' (no matter how fake) can only be good for the game.

To be that mendacious and that mercenary all at once is quite the wicked combination.

Also shoutout to crabs like Hutchy, who only want this because its more money for his companies at the expense of competition integrity. the sooner garbage like him is out of the sport the better for it.

next up, a secondary finals competition for the bottom 8 that can utilize the unused stadia and time slots. :rolleyesv1:

That could actually be more fun than the wildcard stuff

And the results of the bottom 8 playoffs is used to determine the draft order - winner gets pick #1

I don't really care that much about it being a top 10, the structure with the double chance was already too weird. Just hope they don't have the bye then the "wildcard" round. H&A form has already been devalued enough.

It adds a few extra races for seculative opportunities. The race for 4th is heated, the race for 6th is heated, the race for 10th is heated. should significantly reduce the number of dead rubber games. A late shock season loss could really have a masisve consequence.

Finals is already isolated from the H&A season, they're a different reality. The idea of what is "real" might start to shift.

The 7 v 10 and 8 v 9 games take place over the "pre-finals bye" weekend.

So you have Rd 24, then Finals "wildcard" and then the real stuff starts.

What if we brought back the Wizard Cup and the winner is guaranteed a finals spot?

Why don't we guarantee every team a place in the finals?

Hear me out.

All 18 teams play the regular season, then......wait for it.......every team plays finals!!

What more could fans want, right? Everyone wants to see their team play finals....stadiums would be packed, the excitement and anticipation would be through the roof....can you imagine?!

It'd be a Dillon masterstroke.

I'm interested to hear what players across the league think (without their AFL overlords scripting it). I think there'd be a significant portion of players who'd be embarrassed by finishing 10th and getting to play 'Finals'.

I recall at hillbilly country football level as a junior, we would play B finals (or as it was known by the A teams, the 'Veggie finals'). It was for all the teams who didn't make finals and it was a real 'who cares cup', mostly seen as a source of shame, and a source of much frustration from players/volunteers/parents who just wanted the nightmare season to be over with, but were forced to eek out a few more weeks for essentially nothing. Eventually it was canned and went back to normal finals fixture, and I think everyone was relieved.

The players will toe the line and talk about how exciting it is to still be in the hunt and how fantastic it is to keep the dream alive.

Deep down, though, they'll know exactly what you've pointed out here. This is an exercise in futility and a counterfeit method of supposedly generating a fairer and more open competition.

Wildcard ain't a final, sorry Bombers fans it doesn't count.

And if it does count, then its not a Wildcard round, its a ****ing 10 team finals series in an 18 team comp, meaning we are letting shit teams make finals now.

What a dogs breakfast this league is.

Wonder how Andrew Dillon will blame Laura Kane for this when we get to finals, wildcard round produces 2 blow out games, and then 7th and 8th go into finals at a disadvantage and likely get spanked.

Can't wait for 4 of the first 6 finals to be trash results

People will undoubtedly say that my viewpoint on this is just silly and futile. But I will not be watching a single 'wildcard' final at any point in the future. Even if the only 'finals' we qualify for throughout the rest of my life are these ludicrous sideshows, I will still refuse to watch a single second of them.

I hope many, many people take the same view, of course. But even if they don't, I won't be legitimising this pathetic cash grab masquerading as legitimate content with even a single second of investment on my part. That weekend will be just another form of the pre-finals bye for me. Which was ironically yet another ill-conceived and haphazard idea of the AFL overlords.

Was the whole Port Adelaide getting beaten by the bye meme really 14 years ago

Edit: yes it was!
