I suspect next year they’ll do a Lions of 2019 and who knows from there, but wouldn’t surprise me if Hardwick will do what Fagan can’t at the Lions.

Like Fagan though, I reckon players at other clubs will want to come to the Suns because of Hardwick being there plus being in that premiership window.

What I’ll be interested in is the calibre of assistants Hardwick will be able to entice unlike the Lions being able to get anyone of note.

Calibre of assistants is a good point and a major reason for Hardwick's success. But that doesn't neccessarily mean that the best or most promising will want to go to the Suns. Hardwick has been a bit flakey over the last couple of seasons so for mine the jury is out on his chances of success there.

If you sit back and do a deep dive of the 2 lists I reckon you would find that Gold Coast have more out and out talent than we do.
So to that, if Damien Hardwick can not take the list to Glory there is something wrong with him as coach.

Currently no, as a lot of it is still potential talent.

But in the not to distant future, they’re potentially going to have the most talented list in the competition. If they can keep everyone they want to keep.

Also, a lot of that comes back to us going a year early on Neale.

I’m not criticising the trade, but we compromised on David Noble’s strategy of going to three consecutive drafts with strong hands.

We should have one more crop of players from the 2018 draft, which we don’t have.

I think it was the right call at the time, we had 3 key players that you would of for all expectations been out starting midfield by now of Rayner, McCluggage and Berry. Which you would of bet on being a deadly midfield trio at the same level as Petracca / Oliver / Viney.

It hasn't really panned out that way unfortunately. Maybe it still can.

None of Berry, McCluggage or Rayner showed they were a dominant inside mid at junior level.

Berry showed the most as a general defender. McCluggage was dominating as a goal scoring outside mid slash winger, while Rayner was a damaging general forward.

All had skills that might translate to a top line midfielder, but none of them had actually shown that as a junior player.

I think it's hard to say it wasn't the right move though.

Would have been a handy draft to have a couple of selections in the 5 to 20 range > Connor Rozee(5), Ben King(6), Bailey Smith(7), Zac Butters(12), Xavier Duursma(18). Who would you have preferred Lachie or 2 of those? Still very happy with Lachie, would we have gone on to play finals in 2019 without him... probably not.

Port absolutely nailed that draft.

From memory the talk on here was Caldwell and Duursma were the guys we liked around our original picks. Duursma would be a handy on the wing and Caldwell would be upgrade on Dev in list terms though if we played Dev more and actually on ball when we did he might be able to offer a somewhat similar impact. The quality of that 2018 draft really plummets off sharply after Quaynor. Some solid players but if given the chance I take our Brownlow medallist and captain over the two picks.

Given Caldwell has already walked after being drafted interstate I think you should be looking who got drafted with the replacement pick. :/

If we have learned anything over the years it's that you take the player when he chooses your club rather than delaying for 12 months as things often change. Neale may not have wanted to come to us 12 months later.
Lachie's been clearly the best player at our club since our golden years, played nearly every game and been consistently good ,sometimes exceptional.

To even suggest we should've done other than get hold of him when we did on some pie in the sky at the time is just not clear thinking.

It’s infuriating to see North fans request priority picks because of two main arguments: they are shit and they’ve never had one before.

I’ll admit I’m not sure what the best approach is because they can’t keep holding up the table but their reasoning is ridiculous.

We were simultaneously attacked during the GH5 by multiple clubs looking to feast on our carcass. We continued to get raided as it was an easy kill. We were also affected by the introduction of the expansion clubs almost more than any other.

Which young players have North lost? What are their actual extenuating circumstances? You don’t just get assistance because you’re no good.

The idea they should get PPs now because they’ve never had them before is also frankly absurd.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that we shouldn't have gone for Neale.

I am saying that we don't have the depth or quality of own drafted talent that most other clubs around us on the ladder have.

Definitely. Agree.

But we've had a shot at it for coming up to 5 years this year. Something we would never have envisaged.

We've still got the nucleus of a core group with some good younger talent and we need to be smart about how we go about it from here.

I'm all for getting some trade value out of players who aren't going to get us through the next era and rebuilding which paradoxically will be a lot easier if we fall short this year.

Harsh as that is you have to continually look ahead .

It’s mostly hard to feel sorry for North, 95% of their situation has been because of their own doing.

As was ours. And I felt sorry for us, so I can spare a bit of sorry for them.

Not sure I'd be trading anyone to go through a mini rebuild. I'm kind of hoping our up-coming father son/s and potential academy prospects over the next three drafts provide us with enough talent to regenerate our list with higher talent than we would otherwise have had access to.

There's a big asteriks on what possible changes there are to father son and academy bid matching will look like. There's a fair bit of hype about Gold Coasts upcoming draft crops, particularly their current U16's and U15's age groups (this extends to their girls academy to), I can see Vic clubs becoming vocal about changing some of the rules about the Northern academies.

They're not worse than Richmond's, surely
richmond supporters are just a bit dull in my experience

north supporters are even duller than richmond's with a minnow club mindset.

was lurking their thread on the hawthorn racism inquiry to see what the other club who had a head coach impacted by the findings thought on it and most of the reading was appalling. a lot of it was pretty blatantly racist imo

a genuinely nasty and unpleasant lot if i were to generalise
