Game Day Non-Swans Game Day Thread (The Finals)

This might not make sense to anyone, just sorta airing my thoughts here. I've found it hard to really get into non-Swans games over the last year or so, and I've realised why - the stakes just don't feel high to me, in any game, between any two teams.

I think the competition is so even these days, and it's led to a genuine unpredictability as to who will win nearly each and every game, which in theory is a good thing. But the unintended consequence of this is that the stakes are lowered for each game. So I don't know who will win most games, but I also simply don't care?

The season is so long and every team's form so tumultuous over the course of that season that so many results can't really be read into much, win or loss.

St Kilda get flogged by Brisbane, then the next week they flog Fremantle, who the week before flogged Adelaide, who the next week flog Carlton, who the next week beat Geelong, who the next week beat the ladder-leaders in Collingwood, who were flogged by GWS, who we beat, but then we were beaten by Essendon, who were flogged by the Bulldogs... on and on it goes. Results that feel shocking and meaningful in the moment turning out to be aberrations and meaningless a week later.

This happens enough and the shocks stop becoming aberrations and they become standard. Once the shocks become standard, are they that shocking anymore? Is there such thing as an "upset" win or loss anymore, when there's so many examples of "anyone can beat anyone" throughout the season? Is there such thing as a "top four clash" anymore, when it's so hard to really know who the top four teams actually are? Is there such thing as a "September preview" anymore, when the ladder is so likely to undergo massive changes between now and September?

So yeah could just be me, maybe I'm imagining things and nostalgia is making these seem like bigger deals in the past than they are in the current era. But I just feel like the home & away season more than ever feels like a meeting that could've been an email to open on September 1.

How can you not be enthralled by a Friday night blockbuster of Essendon vs Richmond?

The alternative is you're just getting older and have other priorities in life that mean you aren't as big a footy tragic as you used to be. It can be as simple as that.

Whats impacting myself is generally how howlers made by umpires and boundary riders are becoming more common.

There is just to much umpiring stop/start to games now the ruck frees and insufficient intent is killing the game.

Boundary riders? Luke Hodge upsetting you? :p

Are they really?
I call rubbish on that.

What I do notice is how much more coverage we consume.
Every game is televised.
So many angles. So many replays.
So so much more content online.
I feel our perception of the game has changed on the back of this increased immersion into every little facet of play.

When you watch old (or not even that old ie 2005) games its apparent how simplistic the coverage was.
I think we're suffering from a footy overload to a degree.

Heeney and Dempsey were out by at least a meter and on both times the boundary umps were right there both calls changed the outcome of the game imo.

The ruck frees are the most ridiculous lottery calls along with insufficient intent again both didnt exist in 2005

I maybe wouldn't mind all of the content if it was actually about the footy. But like 90% of what I see online and social media etc is about what Bailey Smith's said, what Kane Cornes has said, what Harley Reid's done, what Caroline Wilson's said, what Laura Kane's stuffed up, what Sam McClure thinks, what Ugle-Hagan's been up to, what's happened with Willie Rioli, etc.

So much of footy these days is about "storylines" and "theatre" and "characters", and not enough about the actual sport itself.

At least Baz is not some criminal redemption story

Didn't you complain the other day that the sport itself is over analysed and it's actually really simple?

I second that. I think Smith’s name was mentioned 20 times in the 5 minutes b4 the game.

Anyhow Dogs lost so the earth is back in orbit.

I would think that would make every win more important, adds to the theatre for me. 10 years ago and previous to that it was 90% obvious who would win when a top 4 team was playing one of the rest. Even if the underdog won and made finals, they were just making up the numbers.

But yeah agree re the form fluctuations. Makes it harder to read into but that just means it creates more hope for me in regards to our own team capitalising on it even if it seems we aren't doing too well.

They arent singing its refreshing and new tho
I like rapping, I think it is a genuine talent and hip-hop comprises a fair chunk of my Spotify library. But it's not a melodic genre of music. The problem with that is that in a live capacity it just ends up sounding like shouting, not dissimilar to an MC flogging promo deals over a PA system during the halftime break set to background music.

I also think indigenous culture is extremely special and unique, and would've preferred to see more of that on display rather than indigenous artists doing their best impression of American hip-hop artists.

Commentators all saying the ball came out in the tackle in the Bombers forward line that led to that goal. No it effing didn't he deliberately dropped the ball. Incorrect Disposal correct call not play on. I loathe that shit about ball comes out in the tackle. It is bullshit. They ALWAYS deliberately drop it if they can't get a handball off.

Nope. The umpires are crap. They have been crap for ages. The rules are now crap too since Gollum decided to eff them up. Even Razor says the umpiring is poor and has been for a while. He agrees the rules make it hard and are far too interpretive. But he thinks the umpires should be more Full Time. That would improve their performance and they would be far fitter and more able to keep up. He agrees many of the umpires get themselves in the wrong positions so they can't actually see the play. Therefore they make decisions and they are just guessing. He thinks they need to be one onside, one offside. In other words one boundary side and one midfield so both sides are covered. The other two are of course in the other half.
