Just noting how flawed the standard 5,4,3,2,1 voting system is. Today i was personally struggling to find a player to give the 1 vote to, whereas last week i could have given votes to any number of players. In the Rd. 3 game vs. Melb. I could only find 3 players worthy of votes and reluctantly gave a 2 and 1.
Back in my coaching day's i was always critical of this type of voting and consider votes to any number of player's out of 10 to be a fairer assesment of a player's performance.
Realise it's only a fun thing but i have alway's taken the voting fairly seriously. Probably from my coaching past i tend to watch the game, well probably like a coach i.e. with a fairly critical eye. I'm alway's looking to see how a player's particular opponent is performing, game plan's, set play's, moves etc.etc. I take notes of how a player perform's in each qtr. Too often player's get votes for a scintillating last qtr. as it is the most etched into the memory. Umpire's are the worst for this. Do's anyone remember (the year Woewodin won the Brownlow, 2000 ) at K.P. V. Melb. Buddha Hocking was absolutely dominant and the Cat's led by about 8 goals @ 3/4 time. Woewodin had a scintillating last Qtr. and Dee's fought back but were beaten by about 4 goals. The umpires gave Woewodin 3 votes when Buddha was B.O.G. by that far it wasn't funny.
I presume the winner doesn't get an award? Is there any thought of maybe presenting the winner with something in appreciation of their performances throughout the year? Perhap's next year the one's who want to vote could chip in a few bucks and we could present a small memento?
Just interested to know your thoughts.
