lol, it's not a complicated question, I'm just curious as I haven't watched that much of port, or houston especially in his younger years

but yeah go on, be a keyboard warrior lol

I’d choose Houston every day of the week, because Houston did it all (assuming we are allowed to know how he turned out in this scenario).

Nwm might!

We'll first need AFL exemption to trade not just both but even 1 of our future first rounders.

Rules still state we need 2 first round selections in a rolling 4 year period. 2022 and 2023 we got nothing because of the JHF trade and then 2024 was Berry. 2025 looks like nothing too.

But per my calc we now have 9 first round picks in the past 7 years.

Luko, Rozee, Butters, Bergman, Georgiades, Lachie Jones, JHF, Sinn, Berry.

If we get NWM for 2 future firsts, that's 10 in 7 years with the prospect of Cochrane, Salopek and Pilot to be added in the next 2 years. So I think AFL will end up approving it given our average age is quite low and we have one of the greater number of first round selections for a side since 2018.

The reason I'm pointing this out is, as soon as Port get a signal (if they get it) from NWM that he wants to come to Port, we'll be working the phone lines with the AFL to get the exemption sorted pre-trade period. If and when that starts, I think we'll see some leaks in the media that'd strongly suggest NWM is coming home.

Dougie / Louis / Zemes being obvious 1st round picks for us and our picks that currently exist going to the Saints who need 1st round picks the AFL fairly quickly tick that off but we’d probably like to get something done with Gold Coast.

Gold Coast does not need this years or next years 1st round picks.

For starters, there is no zero chance of a sign and trade deal occurring involving Bergman.

I think you'd find a first and two seconds is far closer to the mark than what you will be expecting for an out of contract player, irrespective of their talent level.

Collingwood gave up a future first round pick, pick 36, a player in their best 23 (Noble) and a player on the fringe (Richards) for Houston and pick 58.

If we equate Richards' value to pick 58, the trade then becomes a future first round pick, pick 36 and Noble for Houston.

Dare I say Noble's value at the time would have been around a 2nd round pick, which would make the trade equivalent to a first round pick and two second round picks.

Obviously the difference between Houston and NWM is that one was contracted the other is not, though the difference in their ages sort of offsets the difference in contractual status.

If a player is to get involved in the trade coming to St Kilda, if most likely to come from a 3rd party if it's not a fringe player at Port, which is how many of these deals seem to come about anyway.

Lots of hypotheticals and the young man hasn't even decided what he wants to do yet 😂

I’m not sure why you’re including what pies gave up to Gold Coast in this..

What’s relevant is what we got for our contracted gun wantaway player.

And that was pick 13 and a fringe player.

yeah nah, Nas will vy for the best player in the comp over the next 6 years, either with us or with you/adelaide. Houston is a very good player, but he is not Nas.

It’s like saints fans haven’t seen a good player in so long they assume that said good player must be God.

NAS won’t even be the best player at port , much less in the comp.

Yes, elite.

No one will or should have to pay a bounty for what deluded one eyed saints fans THINK he might become.

If your team already had Nas, and we offered a 22 year old Houston for a straight swap, would you take it?

My god how insular saint’s fans are.

Would we take it? It would be the least bent over and rogered we’ve been for a trade in a long time, we would bite your hand off for a trade like that.

it would be the best case scenario lol.

Lets have a crack at how a possible trade could work? Likely involve multiple clubs no doubt.

Port OUT - Future 1st, 2nd rd 2025, 4th rd 2025 Joe berry, Ollie Lord. IN - NWM
St Kilda OUT - NWM. IN - Future 1st, Joe Berry, 2nd rd
Melb OUT - Future 2nd. IN Ollie Lord, 4th rd 2025

Cant see how we could get a deal done without Berry in there. Don't believe we can trade 2 future 1st rounders as we havent made enough 1st picks?

What on earth. That’s insane. That’s quite literally more than twice what we got for Houston.

Essentially two 1sts, 2nd, young kpf and a 4th rounder. For an uncontracted player.

butters was a first rnd pick

Berry isn't 'essentially a 1st'. The fact that we were dumb enough to rate him as a first rounder doesn't mean any other club will be.

2 first round picks gets it done.

We just make an effort to see they are the best picks we can make them.

Port and the Saints probably work on that during the trade period.

We could argue we want a 2nd round 2027 pick back if we lose our 2nd round pick this year trying to improve the offer to the Saints.

We will not be trading Berry unless Berry wants out.

We might try playing him in the position we drafted him for?

Houston was not only a lot older but NWM will be a top 5 type player and difference maker that will become a midfielder

We wont be allowed to trade 2 future 1st rounders. will need to trade someone to get 1.

I like how saints fans live in this world if port only have two firsts, 1 second, and 1 third on the table that's it there is nothing more that they can get

Like there is no way port can trade those picks to get picks that suit saints better

If it gets to late September and he is in contracted and nominates port or crows, he will get there

What with all this top 5 player in the comp bullshit.

There’s absolute guns in the league who aren’t considered top 5 in the league.

I think butters is thereabouts, but there’s prob many many afl fans that don’t even have butters in that top 5. So nas is going to be easily better than butters? Miles ahead of rozee ? Carn.

There’s many many elite players in the afl who aren’t “top 5” in the comp players.

its Berry's first year, hes played 7 afl games, calm the farm.

McHenry was on the list for 6 years, people made that conclusion a couple years into his career.
I get what you’re saying but flip the question what tells you in Berrys performances that this ISNT his standard/level?

When I look at it like that it’s harder to see how he will be worth the price tbh

Drafted as a small forward in the Robbie mould of forward/mid struggled

Moved to high half forward because this^ wasn’t working out great struggled

Now we are down to experiments at half back and 7 touch no influence games

It’s a concern no matter how young or inexperienced he is

Every team has there ITKs, and I assume Port does as well, what is the talk?

We have a very solid ITK who said couple weeks ago that Nas was staying, but things can change.

I don't think he's even made an AA squad.
To be fair this is his 4th season and he is guaranteed to make it this year. Give the man a chance🤣

His rate of improvement each year has been exceptional. Once he is full time mid, he will go up another level again. Already gets it 30 times a week and is very damaging.

If he leaves we will be getting massive unders. Will make 6 All Australian squads by the time he is done.

Nas is an absolute star and he will only get better. However, the thing that drives us nuts at times is he will turn the ball over a few times a game with terrible kicks or he will take the game on (being too cute) and get caught. These things he will iron out with experience.
