Yeah, that's what I was worried about. Hughes and Finch both have to play though IMO. Hughes has an average of over 90 from his last 20 one day innings, with 14 innings over 50 in that time. I read that he has the 2nd highest List A average ever for Australian's, behind Bevan.

Why have the selectors always pinned him as a Test specialist? When he first hit the scene, I thought he'd first be blooded in T20s/ODIs as he's always been a very aggressive batsman and can hit the ball a long way. It's something that has never made sense to me.

And Finch has just been a gun in this format for a couple of seasons now, he deserves an extended run in the side along with Hughes. However, I know the selectors will probably play both Smith/Maxwell and Bailey/Dussey and only one of Hughes or Finch, which sucks.

The crazy thing about Hughes is that for the first half of his career, his List A average was around 30 and he was kinda horrible. Then everything clicked and he exploded.

Sounds like Bailey is a little pissed off at Channel 9 for fueling the perception that this is our 'B' team. It seems like there are people who simply don't realise how good Finch, Hughes and Usman are in the one day format.
Yeah, but it is the B team still. Warner, Watson, Clarke, Hussey, Wade are all missing.
Doherty Maxwell and Bailey are the only genuine spuds. Clint Mckay will go for runs but we'll still smash Spud Lanka.
Maxwell ain't a spud, but Smith is. Swap them around and you are correct.

Interesting logic given Smith has a better List A record than Maxwell, both with bat and ball.
Smith is a better bowler then Maxwell, but there is no arguing Maxwell is a must better batsman than Smith. Smith is the most unorthodox, worst technique I have seen.

Yet Smith's technique has proven effective up the order for NSW in limited overs games. The National Selectors wrongly pegged him as a slogger. Maxwell is little more than a slogger at this stage, and as such would be better down the order.

Have you seen the Smith "front foot goes towards cover and try's to drive it through gully-point" shot?

I've seen him play some very good knocks in his own style against some terrific bowlers. Dominated them at times. He's the Australian whipping boy, I understand that. But I'll be damned if other players like Katich and Chanderpaul haven't made good careers for themselves with ugly and unorthodox techniques. In ODIs one can certainly thrive without a watertight style, too.

Warner 30 avg

Wade low 20's avg

Watson injured

Clarke had to be given a break given he almost missed the Sydney test due to injury.

Hussey yeah I agree should have been picked.

I don't agree that it is a B team in any way, shape or form.

What is the infactuation with cricinfo on this site? Seems like everyone jumps over there, gets a quick couple of stats and trys to argue. Steve Smith is an absolute spud, no stats needed. Watch him bat or bowl he even has a face like a potato.

Katich and Chanderpaul at least played proper shots

As does Smith when he's given the chance to play long innings.

He's still young, screw the haters, I think he'll he a good limited overs player for this country.

I suppose it dosent matter that Bailey avg over 40 and a SR of 77 for Aus, In fact he has a better batting record for Aus than D.Hussey, I only wish we had more spuds like Bailey in the team with that record.

Good on ya mate get off cricinfo. He's played 4 matches for aus, couple of not outs and ofcoure his average will go up. I hope he go's ell and i could be singing his praises after tomorrow, but now, in my opinion, hes a spud.

Dont need to go on cricinfo im a big fan of Bailey so i know his stats pretty good, Also maybe u need to watch more cricket cause he has played more than 4 matches for Aus.

Sorry, if that spud is playing i generally turn it off. Whats he played like 10? Zimbabwe and Bagladesh games shouldnt count.

I consider Voges a better OD player than Bailey.

Come at me,
Bros.
That's probably true, Voges has had plenty of success in one day cricket, especially in England. At 33 though, you have to be dominating at the time to get a look in and he's been very ordinary in the Ryobi this season. Then again, I used the complete opposite logic re David Hussey's test hopes so I'm not a great person to decide this debate (I was perhaps just slightly biased about Dussey:p).

It's still a pretty obvious B team.
Bullshit. Warner and Wade are hardly automatic selections. Hussey has retired. Watson is injured. Clarke is the only absolute definite who would come into the side right now (along with Watto if fit).

Finch and Hughes have been absolute guns in the ODD format for 2 seasons now and should become permanent fixtures in the side. I don't agree with the Haddin selection, but Wade has hardly been much better in one dayers of late. Bailey also could lay claims to becoming a permanent fixture in the side, as he is one of the best finishers in the country. Usman is just there for Test match practice I reckon, but is still 3rd on total runs in ODD this year at a healthy enough strike rate, so his selection is fine.

So, please explain to me how this is a clear 'B' team?

It's not about the new players not being good enough to play in the side. It's the fact that if everyone was fit and available (and the selectors weren't bitter about Hussey), you'd see 5-6 different guys in the team.

Cricket is a statistical game. How else are you meant to make an argument?

We can't all construct compelling arguments like this:

We are also forgetting that Smith looks like a homo, thats another mark against his name.
