For the first time in years we need to be smart, why make it common knowledge anyone has got the arse, go to trade week and see what happens.

We got nothing for Sav Rocca, when we may have got pick 30 North used on him, instead we got nothing.

No one may be interested in any of our delisted players but if we cut them before trade week we get nothing, even an extra 3rd or 4th round pick is better than one in round 5,6 or 7...

This is good in theory, trading unwanted players for picks, but if it were to happen we then need to delist more players to free up the spots needed for the draft picks we already had, and for rookie promotions.

It would only really be worth it for 2nd and possibly 3rd round picks, so we can pass on our later picks. Or trading an unwanted player and say a 4th round pick for a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Not correct, we dont have to use all our draft picks and hence wouldnt have to delist more players. The requirement is to draft four players, allowing us the option of passing on later picks.

We also have the option of promoting rookies to fill spots on the list.

Not delisting till after trade week is common sense.

There are a number of players who have yet to be offered contracts. That's not a great sign for the player in question.

Yakka and the older Clokes are just a few players in that boat.

I reckon Rowe, Walker and Hall all still have a year left on theirs. Will be interesting to see how we go about dealing with that. Two of them are uber-duds!

Figjam, if they are duds and have contracts they should be paid out and cut. What is the point is having duds on the list? We can’t possibly be in cap trouble and we have the money so we should pay out their contracts if we can’t trade them.

Understudy, it’s more a question of telling them they won’t be at Collingwood next year. If they aren’t traded they will be delisted – rather than actually delisting them now. Personally I think it is a bad tactic because it reduces the chance of a trade. It certainly didn’t work for us last year.

Figjam, yep your right on Yakka and Clokes.

Rowe/walker/Hall also been told to look for trades.

Its a case by case basis. Delisting contracted players puts salary cap pressure on your list. If Rowe is contracted, he's a shoo-in to retain. But I'd probably take my medicine with Hall and Walker.
Because they are duds and Rowe might have some redemption? It comes down to cap space (we should have plenty) and list alternatives. The question is Rowe v pick 70odd unless we can package him into a trade. Perhaps line ball but I can’t really talk for the 5th round candidates.

Something to keep in mind when thinking about trading these "dud" players...

They might only be worth a 5th round pick... but...

any pick that is traded for cannot be "passed"... it needs to be used... so if we trade Julian Rowe for pick 78... we need to use pick 78 to draft someone.

In this case it would be better to delist him and elevate Harry for example.

Of course depending on salary cap etc... the same goes with Hall/Walker...

unless we can get a decent trade, its better to delist than trade for a "dud" draft pick.

J-Ro is out of contract.

Ya reckon?

Drafted in '03. Two year minimum. Would have been out of contract at the same time as Brayden and Billy, who were delisted last year. Do you reckon Rowe's manager would have accepted a 2 year??

I swear I read somewhere that Rowe went into a meeting with MM and it stated he was out of contract.

We have left our options open for the trade period. We dont have to trade players or accept draft picks but by not delisting the options are open and we still have the opportunity to delist after the trade period.

Delisting before the trade period sends the message out your players are damaged goods and that you can get them for nothing in the national or preseason draft, thus closing off trading options.

Apparently Yakka was officially told today that he would be delisted.

Based on your post, it would appear you know what you’re talking about, however given your wrong on this occasion; it would appear you know nothing about anything. Yakka has not been delisted, the club is considering their option with a decision pending.
