TENACIOUS Melbourne midfielder Brock McLean is set to miss the rest of the 2008 season after sustaining a serious left ankle injury during Sunday's thrilling one-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.

"He saw the specialist very late yesterday afternoon and he needs surgery, which he'll have on Friday to repair ligaments," Melbourne football operations manager Ross Monaghan told melbournefc.com.au.

"That'll mean the recovery period is longer than a couple of months, so he won't be playing again this season, which is disappointing.

"Scans on Monday showed that he injured the ankle a bit more severely than first thought, so he needs surgery."

Just what we needed. Our most consistant player out for the year

Just give Green the captaincy now, i thought it would be interesting to see the 2 try to prove themselves to get the captaincy next year, but that's gone now, which is disappointing

Melbourne should encourage their fans to bring football boots to the game. At this rate, they'll get a decent run.

MFC - "Err hi, we have gone through our Rookie list and everyone has been elevated due to our current problem of LTI's."
AFL - "Uh huh"
MFC - "Can we now promote a few from our Member list?"

This season really couldn't get much worse. All the best for a speedy recovery Brock. Here's hoping Valenti can step up in his absence and show that he's worth persisting with next season and beyond. :thumbsu:

Is a shame, was on track for his first B&f, will probably still finish top5. I noticed when he came off he already had his ankle strapped, whihc probably explains as to why he looked a bit sluggish at times this season.

Devestated for Brock.

Absoloutly huge loss. He's such an enforcer, love the bloke.

Terrible news but makes his effort to come back on and play a key role in the midfield on Sunday even more impressive. Refused to be told he should not come back on and his willingness to put his body on the line was inspiring.

If people doubted his leadership qualities, those doubts were quashed on Sunday. :thumbsu:

Yup. Dead set gun.

Let's hope he can come back at 100% next season. He just hasn't looked right this year, whilst still managing to well and truly play his part.

I reckon Valenti can fill the void, he was impressive at times on the weekend, has a real crack, im excited about this kid, he has a crack.
As great as Brock can be, I thought he struggled on the weekend before he got injured, he doesnt cope with being tagged all that well.

Lol do you watch football, he is leading the Melbourne Big Footy player of the year esily and would be wining our B&F by a mile. And this year is his first year of getting the No.1 tag most weeks.

His stats so fa this year:
kicks Handpasses disposals marks Tackles Goals contested poss.
177 154 331 58 54 3 102

All at 74.19 efficiency.

Can't believe it. Devestated.

i can if you saw the incident.

im actually relieved in a way it was only ligaments, i thought when i saw it that brock had done a nathan brown or matt mcguire broken leg, and we all have seen how long its taken them to recover from it.

im pissed no doubt, brock has been great for my supercoach and he was having a really great consistant year. But at least it happened now and not in round 22 so he'd miss the whole pre-season.

I know this isn't the greatest thing ever, but there is bright side to it. This season isn't about finals and premierships anymore it's about finding out what players have it and what players don't. We know Brock has it. This will now put other players up the order of things and it will be good to see how they react. Look for the silver lining guys.

Yep it definitely sucks now but same time next year we will have a stronger squad... but still did it have to be McLean?:(

He's actually one of the players i would prefer to lose. I know that sounds weird but if we had to lose someone for the rest of the year he's one of the guys i would pick. I'd much rather it was him than Wonners, Garland, Warnock, ect because these are the guys that need game time.
