Basketball begins on Day 1 of the Olympics with each day alternating between Mens and Womens games leading to the final of the Mens event on the final day before the closing ceremony.

Both the Mens and Womens feature 12 teams separated into 6 team pools, with Australia qualifying for both events.

MENS

POOL A

Argentina
Tunisia
Lithuania
USA
France
Nigeria

POOL B

Australia
Brazil
China
Great Britain
Russia
Spain

Australia start with the two toughest matches of the group to start the competition against Brazil and Spain. The top 4 go through to the quarters however of course we want to avoid finishing 4th and playing the USA in the quarters.

We did however, have an encouraging win against France in the leadup to the games yesterday with Dellavedova starring keeping Tony Parker to only 6 points.

WOMENS

POOL A

USA
Angola
China
Croatia
Czech Republic
Turkey

POOL B

Australia
Russia
Brazil
Great Britain
Canada
France

Predictions

2 golds for America, Australia to scrape to a 2-3 record and go out in the quarters in the mens, while the women finish with silver again.

I'm stumped at to how Tunisia and Nigeria can get a gig ahead nations like Serbia and Greece. Anyone have any odds they can post?

FWIW my prediction would be for the mens:

Gold- USA
Silver- Spain
Bronze- Lithuania/Argentina

The men's team doesn't have a bad pool, wouldn't be surprised if we managed to sneak into the semi's actually with a lot of quality teams not qualifying.

The boomers have a decent team, id say if we had Bogut, we'd be a chance for a bronze. SImilar to the 96 games, i reckon if we had Luc Longley, we could of beaten Lithuania for bronze.... Wonder if Kyle Irving will choose to play for us in the future...probably not.

Doubt we would have beaten Lithuania mate they had some dead set stars in their line up and superior squad, and I assume you mean Kyrie Irving? I'm pretty sure he's stated he wants to play for the US one day.

Yea kyrie irving sorry, what about that sudanese born aussie who was picked up by the lakers last year? what was his name? i might be thinking of a different olympics games, boomers only lost by 6 against lithuania for bronze in 96,

Yeh we only lost by 6, but by no means does that mean we should have beat them. I don't know how much you know about basketball history but the Lithuanian's have produced awesome basketball teams for 2 decades, but yeah overall just because they're a small nation doesn't mean we should have beaten them. (I'm unsure if that's what you were suggesting).

So does that mean you might be better off in the same pool as the US?

I'd say so this year, at least for a nation like us. However this year the Olympics are missing some very strong teams such as Serbia and Greece.

Nothing to be stumped about as they all played in a qualifying tournament in Venezuela a few weeks ago and Greece didn't qualify (they actually lost to Nigeria)

Don't really know that much about international ball past NBA players. Obviously Spain is odds on for number 1 in our group then what?

Brazil did well against USA in a recent practice match, but none of GB, Russia or China are much chop are they? We could sneak into 3rd although then we'd be up against Argentina or Lithuania in the next round which would probs be the end of our campaign. Would have been great if Bogut was fit and firing.

Ruskis will give us a run for our money. But yeah it's not like the pool we copped last olympics.
