PROTESTERS who clashed with police in the violent S11 riots have been given a secret payout by the Bracks Government in return for dropping legal action.

The Government and Victoria Police have agreed to a $700,000 payment to protesters in the confidential deal.

The cash is on top of $600,000 taxpayers have paid in fees for the Government's solicitors.

Forty-seven demonstrators and law firm Slater and Gordon will share the windfall. The lawyers are believed to be allocating about $600,000 to cover their fees.

.............................................

Those who sued alleged their injuries, including fractures to vertebrae, sternums and wrists, and shock and anxiety, were caused by police action.

News of the payout has fuelled worries that the S11 protesters' success could prompt similar action from participants in November's G-20 riots in Melbourne.

It is understood agreement was reached when the event's insurers -- who will cover the payout -- bowed to the prospect of even higher legal costs. And authorities caved in to concerns that even if they beat the protesters and were awarded costs, they would not have been able to get the money from them.

S11 litigants included comedian Rod Quantock, serial protester Ciaron O'Reilly and an SBS TV cameraman.

:thumbsu:

Hopefully this will teach the pigs to keep their batons to themselves next time and accept that copping piss in the face goes with the territory of being a police officer. :D

Will you be ringing these same pigs when someone is breaking into your house?

I'm more concerned that a payout was made.

Yeah cause the cops have such a great track record of chasing down petty thieves.

Why the hell would I waste my time calling those useless pricks?

Next time the cops should just shoot them dead on site instead. Do the community a favour and save the taxpayer money, two birds with one smith and wesson round.

So what part of it is confidential?

Have you seen the footage of S11 PC? Police took off their name badges. The law doesn't recognise them as police officers unless their name badges are on. They then proceeded to club people with their batons. They deserve to be criminally prosecuted for doing that because without their badges they are subject to the same laws as everyone else.

Will prosecutions take place? Will the protestors refuse the money as a matter of principle?

Every whore has their price

I'll rather spend time with Cops than suffer watching Melbourne

I'd rather spend my time watching cops suffer.

The police are liable both civilly and criminally. The protesters have an interest in brining the civil action. If the DPP doesn't charge the police, what else are the protesters going to do?

I just found it amusing that a protest against world economic globalisation turned into a money grab.

If they are principled enough to protest against greed, then they sure as hell better be principled enough to turn down the payout...yes go for the civil action but ask for a hapenny and costs

The money's probably being used to cover legal and medical fees. But I agree left over funds should go to a charity or something.

But just because someone protests "globalisation" doesnt make them against capitalism or making money. It makes them against monopolies and corporate takeovers of the entire planet.

There's a difference.

PC, that's just silly.

If the court finds someone guilt of assault and awards damages, then I'd take it. I'm sure you'd take it too. We'd all take it.

But I am not protesting about corporate greed

It would be quite stupid to protest something like "greed". It would be as ridiculous as waging a war on "terror".

Thats why the "anti-globalisation" protesters actually protest tangible things like working conditions, government oppression, government and corporate corruption etc

A place for everyone on the evolutionary scale.
