Thought it was the definition of "puff piece". Learnt nothing new, aside from the fact that Mal hasn't updated his wardrobe in 40 years.
Fair enough. Maybe it was because I didn't know a lot about his career beforehand then.

I swear Mike could spend the whole half hour without mentioning the VFL/AFL once and people from outside Victoria would still complain.

That's a bit facetious. Look at it from our point of view. The guy was a national human head line pre and post VFL career and it was brushed over. The guy is a walking anecdote and Mike dropped the ball.

He has glossed over details with plenty of guests. It isn't because Brown is from WA, it's because a half-hour show isn't enough.

People have mentioned enough that most interviews could go for an hour long, just look at the Voss interview, plenty of chunks from his career didn't get covered.

Its far from Mike not bothering to do his research and just choosing to ignore comps from outside the VFL.

And the stories go on and on and on......unfortunately all Sheahan cared about was his 14 games in 74.
For those Vics who actually care about the history of Aussie Rules Footy not just the VFL part Browny was a bloody good footballer in his prime and a very influential coach over 20 odd years it is just a pity Sheahan didnt put in some research to bring this to the viewers.

Actually Sheahan did try to get him to admit he was a good footballer with the fact he was the first Australian all-star captain not from Victoria, but Brown kept playing himself down.

No one in this thread told us Victorian know nothings that

Growing up in Victoria and then ACT I know nothing of SANFL and WAFL. I learned more about Mal Brown in this thread than I did watching Open Mike.

I enjoyed the interview at the time but it definitely seems like I only got a speck of the full picture.

Looking forward to Monday's Open Mike with WA football legend Mal Brown. A must watch for all WA footy fans.

Having one of the WA legends on every now and again is all I called for before.

Well done for featuring one. If there was one every 8 or so weeks that'd be fair.

It's such a great platform, & most of the shows are pretty good, I guess some of us have a little bit of the footy trainspotter in us and want a bit more depth & insight into to some of these guys and their stories beyond rehashing some of the headlines.

It's probably asking a bit much in the format they've got. Maybe there's a place for longer format series with more football vision, and perhaps a journalist with a smaller ego. Geoff Poulter usually does a nice job covering careers on SEN for example.

Those complaining about the lack of WAFL content in the Mal Brown interview:
1. He has 30 minutes to fill. I think there are some unrealistic expectations as to what can be covered in that amount of time.
2. What did you hope to gain out of a couple more WAFL related anecdotes? The interview achieved what I believe is the fundamental aim: to shed light on what makes the man tick.
3. You should know how Vic-centric Sheahan is. Did you really expect anything different?

What a disgraceful interview with Mal Brown, he played 210 games of WAFL an it was not even mentioned his career in WA yet Mike could not get enough talking about 14 games in the VFL.
Can't believe these guys sit in front of Mike and put up with this crap. Brown should of king hit Mike!!!
As soon as Brown said todays game is crap Mike changed the subject.
What could of been a great interview was just shit.

So true. I didn't grow up in WA & only moved here roughly ten years ago but am lucky enough to be around a couple of older players from east perth & west perth. One of em took the WAFL to court for a clearance & to listen to some of the stories they tell me every week at work of WAFL football is just amazing. Anything outside the old VFL is just treated with contempt now. As a young fella I grew up in Tassie and yeh we kept an eye on VFL footy but our week was always devoted to the TANFL. Mine being New Norfolk or as we'd all say down there "norfick

Some people on here need to get over the fact that the National Competition spawned (rightly or wrongly) from the VFL. For that reason, the SANFL and WAFL histories get treated unequally (rightly or wrongly) by certain media personalities and, generally, fans in Victoria. I'm sure the SANFL and WAFL have rich and interesting histories/traditions, but as a Victorian and fan of the VFL/AFL I couldn't give a stuff.

Mike is generally interviewing from an VFL/AFL perspective. If you don't like it, don't watch it. More power to you.

Yes, don't watch it and watch those alternatives that totally exist in the national media that rightly focus on the other competitions as well.

They don't exist because I suspect it's not financially viable for a national network to run a show about a State league.

The only reason the VFL gets recognition/attention on shows such as Open Mike because it is an extension of the AFL. It's not necessarily because it was a better or more important league in any particular era (that's a whole other argument which life is too short to bother with).
