When the Gold Coast come a knocking at Hawthorn, they're going to obviously come after one of our star players who will have massive marketing potential to their club (e.g. Franklin, Roughead, Hodge, Rioli, Sewell, Brown etc.) although I can't see the club letting any of these players get poached as their pretty vital to our success.

We do however have 3 promising footballers on our list who all hail from Queensland in Michael Osborne, Brent Renouf and Brendan Whitecross. Understandably the Gold Coast will be looking to lure Queenslanders where possible, and all three of these players (I have excluded Hayden Kiel who will probably be delisted as a rookie at the end of the year) would be suitable options when the GC takes one of our uncontracted players.

The question is, which one can we afford to lose? Obviously it would be great if we could keep all 3 of them, but hypothetically if the situation arose where we had to give the GC one of them, which one would it be?

Osborne is a senior player who fills in brilliantly across our half-forward line. He's finally found his niche and form as a player getting named in Mike Sheehan's top 50 players last year. He has however been at the club for some time and would be VERY settled in Melbourne.

Renouf often gets unfairly maligned as one of the whipping boys, but it's easy to forget that he's barely 21 and young developing ruckmen are synonymous with taking a long time to develop. Considering our lack of current Ruck talent, it might be a dangerous move to let him go.

Whitecross is an up and coming midfielder at the Hawks who dominated the U16s competition once upon a time, and has a famous admirer in Michael Voss. He has found a place in the Hawthorn team as a back-pocket in 2009, and has matured rapidly in only his second year. He was one of the co-captains in his AIS squad with Jack Grimes and Trent Cotchin and should have a bright future in our midfield.

So who do you choose?

I have chosen Renouf, no particular reason only that he is probably not as valuable long term as the other two (apologies in advance to those who disagree).

As you said Osborne is very settled and an integral part of the team. Whitecross I believe will become a good midfielder given time and quality midfielders are not easy to find either.

At the end of the day would hate to lose any of them but the club won't have a choice.

Clearly long term it is Osborne.

I believe Renouf would be a very good chance of going, comes out of contract at that time and would be a good ruck prospect for GC. I hope we sign him up.

WhiteX won't go anywhere.

I don't think they will go for Ossie who will be 27-28.

I'd choose Renouf.
Pretty replaceable I reckon.
Although he is only 21 I still think you can tell if they are going to be a star or not.
His ruckwork might develop, but I think we would have better signs by now relative to his worth around the ground.

Mmmm that's quite a dilemma.

I think while Osborne has been a great player for us, and his impact last year was magnificent, he's the one I'd prefer to go. Purely long term thinking here.

Renouf is so young, with a heap of potential. Get a new ruck coach in and in a couple of years he could be anything.

Whitecross is very, very impressive. An absolute champion in the making, and according to some good judges, a potential future captain of our club. So he stays for mine.

But I propose an alternative: let's rookie list Warrick Capper next year. So when the Gold Coast come knocking we can offer up him up.

Osrborne purely cause its 2011. If whovever it was left at the end of this year Id choose someone different, but in a couple of years Osborne will be more easily replaced by one of the new kids, pitty cause I like his game

Interesting one Nev, Whitey is contracted until the end of 2011 so he can't go as uncontracted.

Twister's contract ends this year so you wouldn't see them as signing anything less than two, so that's him covered as well.

Leaving Ossie, who will be out of contract at the end of 2010 but would be outside their 'chosen model'.

Unless they could see the value of bringing in an experienced premiership player to help steer the ship ala Stewie Dew.

I think they'll be looking at our very best players myself as opposed to 'bringing the boys home', but if I was a Hodge or a Franklin and I saw Hunt signed for $700,000 a season - for a start I'd want a Judas-sized contract and I'd also have second thoughts about what sort of culture they are trying to engender.

Osborne and Whitecross are required players and are in the long term plan...

Twister is required but not as high an essential as the other two...

I hope they all stay, as I ****en hate watching our players at other clubs :thumbsu:

Renouf for mine...

But it depends if Max ends up with consistent game time... With him and Campbell in the ruck, Taylor as a reserve ruck... as much as I'd hate to see him go, he'd probably only be 3rd or 4th string ruck until Campbell left the club.

Whitecross would be next for mine purely because Ozzie will most likely be a better player for us over the next 3/4/5 years while we will likely be at the top end of the ladder and have a greater chance of premiership success.

Would be better to keep them all though...

I thought Renouf signed a 2 year contract last year for this season and next, making him available?

I do agree they will be chasing our best players.

Actually I'm sure you are right now that I think about it - signed with that group of about 9 leading up to the Grand Final.

Perhaps the contract update thread needs updating.:)

None of the above.

I seriously think that talking up players that should be poached, traded and delisted is just so wrong.

It's a fact that every year 3 players get delisted, and it is also a fact that when new clubs come along players from all clubs will possibly be poached.

As footy/hawk fans it is reasonable to discuss the above provided it is discussed in a reasonable manner.

No different to chatting about it down the pub as far as I am concerned (altho down the pub feel free to chat unreasonably! ;))

None of them for me, with the GC picking someone else

But because the question is out of those three, I would take Renouf. Simply because he is a young, up and coming, premiership ruckman.

since osborne has speant more time in VIC than QLD in his life, and his best friend (Motram) is a victorian, i highly doubt the hawks would get rid of him, or that he would want to leave. He also has a huge leap which will become more required, as Willo's knees cannot hold up that much longer.

Whitecross has huge potential, the ability to play as an outside midfielder which we desperately need. Has already proven himself that he can read

renouf however, doesnt have the height or strength at the moment to compete around the ground, and seems to struggle to jump at the ball in the middle.

therefore, renouf

Surely we only playing Taylor to put his trade value up.So we can trade him for draft picks to the Gold Coast.

If renouf keeps denying to have shots at goal then he wont improve but

long term/ ossie

short term/ renouf

Whitex is a keeper

Dont think the GC will be banging down doors for any of them though Renouf would be my choice....is not much of a player at all in my opinion.

However, I think we should be much more concerned about Hodge who has not signed yet. The talk is a potential offer of a five year deal at close to 1.5 a year and the captaincy which as we know the Hawks have not given him. With a young family and a short life in football, what would you do?

Geepers.

That would be a disaster.

Yeah but it won't be these three players.
