When the Gold Coast come a knocking at Hawthorn, they're going to obviously come after one of our star players who will have massive marketing potential to their club (e.g. Franklin, Roughead, Hodge, Rioli, Sewell, Brown etc.) although I can't see the club letting any of these players get poached as their pretty vital to our success.
We do however have 3 promising footballers on our list who all hail from Queensland in Michael Osborne, Brent Renouf and Brendan Whitecross. Understandably the Gold Coast will be looking to lure Queenslanders where possible, and all three of these players (I have excluded Hayden Kiel who will probably be delisted as a rookie at the end of the year) would be suitable options when the GC takes one of our uncontracted players.
The question is, which one can we afford to lose? Obviously it would be great if we could keep all 3 of them, but hypothetically if the situation arose where we had to give the GC one of them, which one would it be?
Osborne is a senior player who fills in brilliantly across our half-forward line. He's finally found his niche and form as a player getting named in Mike Sheehan's top 50 players last year. He has however been at the club for some time and would be VERY settled in Melbourne.
Renouf often gets unfairly maligned as one of the whipping boys, but it's easy to forget that he's barely 21 and young developing ruckmen are synonymous with taking a long time to develop. Considering our lack of current Ruck talent, it might be a dangerous move to let him go.
Whitecross is an up and coming midfielder at the Hawks who dominated the U16s competition once upon a time, and has a famous admirer in Michael Voss. He has found a place in the Hawthorn team as a back-pocket in 2009, and has matured rapidly in only his second year. He was one of the co-captains in his AIS squad with Jack Grimes and Trent Cotchin and should have a bright future in our midfield.
So who do you choose?
