As a lot of people on this board im a close follower of the redbacks, like usual they are having a below average season. I really believe that the problem starts at the bottom, grade cricket. We have 13 teams which is unnecessary, in such a small state 5, 6 or 7 teams would be a much better options.

With 13 teams it means there are 132 players each weekens playing grade cricket with one club having a bye, this severly filters out the talent. It makes it much easier to make it up to A grade district and the opposition is not as strong as it should be at grade level.

Blokes like Callum Fergusson who can bat a bit get through the system easily and face bowlers who arent a great standard when they go out there most weekends, then they are expected to go face someone like a cameron white, mitch johnson, brett dorey etc the next weekend and think oh yeah this wont be a huge step up, but it is from your average or probably even above average grade bowler.

If you look at the NSW grade comp i think there is only 15 teams from memory, so we have only 2 less and under half their population.

The ideal solution would be to trim the competition back to 6 teams. You wold need to keep Northern Districts as one, they are a strong club and wold be an ideal base for up and coming cricketers through the northern region. Southern would be ideal for the same reasons through the south. Adelaide/Sturt/Uni/Prospect would need to merge to form one club, this would cover the central areas. Port and Woodville could merge to create a north-western club, this would be good as port have struggled for years at district level and arent really required as a single club. Glenelg and West Torrens would also need to merge to form a south-western club, both are reasonably strong clubs and they really arent that far apart. The final club would be East Torrens, which then would incorporate players from easts, Kensis and Tea Tree Gully. here also could be an argument for TTG to be the final club it could really go either way.

So with my proposal only the top 66 blokes would be playing A grade each week which is extremely efficient, at the moment there isnt a heap of pressure on players to perform at a grade level with the number pof spots available, this would breat more pressure and bring the better players out.

Just an idea like to see what others think

I think the problem runs deeper than that mate.

no i tend to agree with the too many top grade teams, they need to ensure guys making their way to the top play the best week in week out, not have some teams who have 1 to 2 top class bowlers and the rest are "almost".

saying that if your good enough you will make it regardless

So why the need to cull teams? I think a bit of it does relate to numbers of sides ie English system V Australian system. But it relates to scheduling of International and Sate Games . The loss of the experienced players from State and District cricket would hurt as much.

When did Lehman last play for Salisbury/Northern Districts?

Other than injury he would have this weekend.

IIRC Mathew Elliott played for West Torrens, Mark Cosgrove played for Northern Districts (Salisbury) and Shun Tait may have even played for Adelaide?

I was dong the flipside thing - fairly poorly by the looks of it.

the problem starts with certain players (who i wont name) who think its alright to spend 5 nights a week on the piss
not only that... but first you need a quality field to pick from and at the moment ours is far far to diluted
