Poor response. It's the letter of the law, the umpires were just following the rules.

We can question the rule but the umpires did nothing wrong.

Agree with that. If they have breached the limit then the blame should sit with the umpire interchange official who allowed it to happen. They should just stop the game and reverse the last interchange.

The rule itself is a disgrace. How can the AFL possibly want a rule like that to gift a team a win. Would they be happy for a GF to be decided like that.
It is not fair in any sense of the word and it's about time the AFL woke up to itself. FFS, our game is fast becoming a laughing stock.

Compared to 6-6-6 being a warning or free kick in the middle, a free and 50 seems extreme. In this case the 50 didn't mean much.

If it's caught immediately and the interchange doesn't actually happen, then you have the same situation as 6-6-6. No impact on the game. It's only if the interchange goes ahead that you have a problem, though then having 1 extra interchange is not exactly a huge advantage.

Can't agree. Sure they'd like to finally win one, but doesn't actually matter in the end. Probably better to lose a close one than win it for the longer term.

On the other hand, it’s a fundamental rule for clubs to observe closely and manage, and always have enough spare interchanges left up their sleeves at the end of the game.
