Can anyone shed any light into how our younger kids are going? The likes of Ellard, Joseph, Hill etc. Are they any good, how have they gone, and are they good enough to stick around?

Cheers.

David Ellard and Aaron Joseph are definately keepers, IMO. Very fast movers. Putting them into our senior list is kind of like a junkie - all speed.

I never caught much of Lachie Hill, unfortunately. Sorry.

I think you mean rookies?

Out of all of them I think Joseph looks the best, just moves like a natural with everything he does. He reminds me a lot of Justin Davies the way he moves, and although not quite the aerialist Davies was, he more than makes up for it at ground level with his pace and going in hard for the ball, also really knows where the goals are. If we don't manage to find another small crumbing forward late in the draft I imagine we might see him get some games next year.

Ellard also very good skills, awareness and goal sense, but being even smaller than Joseph and not quite as pacey (and we could always use more pace), he'd have to do that much more to edge him out. Having said that, he did crack a game in the senior side in round 7 against WC and Joseph still hasn't (was Joseph injured early in the season anyone?).

Lachie Hill is 191cm and recorded some very impressive speeds and vertical leap at draft camp and has a booming left boot. I've only seen him play once and he booted a goal from almost 60m out on the run like it was a 20m field pass (he was pretty stoked when I used that simile at the B&F). He obviously still has a lot to learn if he can't crack a senior elevation on the back of those attributes.

Since Carlton started winning games on a regular basis again I haven't seen that much of the Ants, so hopefully others can shed more light.

I also think there is some merit to the idea of de-listing Benjamin and picking him back up in the rookie draft in the absence of more promising project players.

You're never around anyone honey...

You can accuse Tigs of many things AWG, but to suggest that he is never around would be akin to suggesting that Gibbsy can't play footy

I haven't really seen much of the kids (who haven't had a great deal of time at senior level). What I am looking forward to however is Sam Jacobs. He could very well be our new Big Red, I hope he can break into the squad sometime in 09 to give us a look.

Ellard fast? Hes small and clever but hes not fast, you wouldnt pick as someone to break away from a pack like Joseph can.

Joseph is the only dead set certainty to be retained iMHO.

Its this group of kids we need in order to maintain the depth needed to be considered a force in the AFL.
What we must do is make sure this group boast a lot of talent, so when we get hit hard with injuries (you never know what can happen), it won't be an issue as much, as we will have the depth to cover all weaknesses.

Whilst I reckon Hill and Ellard will be kept on as second year rookies, I agree that Joseph is most likely to make it. Reminds of a young Nathan Foley.

Very disappointed to open this thread and find you talking about Rookies, rather than outing someone for the products of post victory celebrations, and demanding maintenance cheques.:D

I'd agree with that. Ellard would be touch and go, given he lacks that real leg speed you'd want you small crumbing forward to posess. As for Hill, it would be up to the club to determine how much more improvement/development he has in him.

I'd be fairweather if I stopped going to Carlton games when they were losing, but I didn't, I still went to Carlton's games, I just went to some Ants games as well to get that winning feeling, and because Beach Rd Oval in Sandy is just the most picturesque place to spend a Satuday afternoon when the weather is fair :p
