A+ - star of the game, indespensible wouldn't trade.
A - star of the team, would trade reluctently
B+ - solid best 22 player tradeable for the right price
B - developing kid* or fringe 22 player who is easily replaceable with right trade/draft
C+ - untried senior list draftee
C - untried rookie listed player
F - delist candidate

Using the above scale here is my list ratings:
A+
Cotchin
A
Deledio Martin Riewoldt Maric Chaplin
B+
Newman Grimes Ellis Grigg S.Edwards Houli Knights Rance Tuck Jackson King Vickery Conca Morris Foley
B
Dea* Batchelor* Astbury* Petterd McGuane Griffiths* Vlastuin* Helbig* Elton* O'Hanlon*
C+
McIntosh McBean McDonough Arnot
C
Williams Darrou Verrier
F
Lonergan^ Nahas A.Edwards White Stephenson^ Derickx

* - developing kids who wouldn't be traded at this stage
^ - elevated rookie listed players whose delisting wouldn't have a big effect on the list.
Italics - while many would rate him as a B+ I have him rated as still a developing kid rather than solid 22 type as they have only played a handful of games.

As you can see we have a solid group of B+ players. The key for us is having some of those B+ types elevating themselves into the A grade level and then having them replaced by some of the B grade types. Once that happens then we will have a solid finals quality list.

The B+ types I'd be looking to elevate themselves are: Grimes(once fit) Ellis Edwards Rance Conca. The B types I'd be looking to elevate themselves are: Dea Batchelor Astbury Griffiths Vlastuin Helbig Elton O'Hanlon. Then there is the untried draftees of which all 4 look capable of being on the list next year.

By the start of next year I would be hoping the side looks something like(subject to trading/drafting):
B: Morris Chaplin Grimes
HB: Houli Rance Batchelor
C: Ellis Cotchin Conca
HF: Knights Griffiths Deledio
F: S.Edwards Riewoldt Vickery
R: Maric Vlastuin Martin
INT: Grigg Dea Helbig Foley

Depth: Newman Astbury Petterd McGuane Tuck Jackson King McIntosh McBean McDonough Elton Arnot O'Hanlon

Still reckon we need to lure a big "Goddard-type" player, preferably during free trade period. Someone who can slot straight in and have an immediate impact to our current group!
As for the recycled options available at season's end, perhaps we should focus on scouring the country for established players in their early 20's such as Morris, Blicavs, Duigan, Puopolo or Barlow (just to name a few)?
Who knows, this could prove to be a better option than topping up with fringies from rival clubs!

IMO clubs have to pay overs to lure a Goddard type. I'd rather us keep hitting the draft hard in the first round. Keep nailing our first pick. We seem to have done better the last 2 drafts with our picks after 20 with Elton, McBean and McDonough. So would like us to try trade into the draft rather than out of it. A young gun like an Adams being the exception where they still have 10-12 years of footy in them.

Blicavs was far from an established player. But agree with you. Give a 20-22 year old a chance who hasn't had a crack before that fits the recruiting profile. Ideally they'll be big enough to classify as ready-made but also have their kicking at a high level as well as being super competitive. A ruckman is the other one to target from state leagues. IMO we need to try unearth a Currie type. Big, strong, excellent tap work and super athleticism. I don't really rate Hannath who people have mentioned. Looks slow and ordinary IMO.

In terms of fringies Houli fits our kicking mantra so he was a good pick up. Maric has proved to be a good pick up because he offered us something with his competitiveness that we didn't have and he can kick the ball well for a big fella. Knights likewise uses it well and looked a good pick up. Chappy wasn't a fringe guy but not a superstar so we were able to entice him over without paying overs and he fits in well. It's guys like Grigg, Petterd, Lonergan that struggle with the kicking side of our game plan and Grigg through his competitiveness that we need to try do better than through the state leagues. Having said that, if Grigg was in the 22-25 players on the list rather than a top 10-15 bloke we'd be going places.

IMO clubs have to pay overs to lure a Goddard type.

The only player that seems to be a Goddard type is Gibbs and the reality is he would not be willing to move unless you were going to pay him significant overs, which would be a mistake as he's not the type of player who thrives in the congested pressure based type of football in finals.

I think Deledio is our Goddard type anyway. Dimma has moved him behind the ball in the past and I thought going into this year we would move him forward to play out of the square every now and again since he is so strong in the air. Going forward I think Deledio has the ability to elevate his standing as a game breaker if he can go forward and kick goals on a more consistent basis. Ironically he showed that ability when he tagged Deledio in round 2 2011.
