Forget getting a gun forward or this year's Cooney or trying to lure an injury-prone homesick South Australian.

Our next big signing should be Alan Stewart.

The bloke has worked some real magic down the road and they've got the cattle to be a force for a long time. He knows his onions.

I just hope that when Gary gets the arse in Round 19, Fantasia is given the bullet as well.

Hands off we still want him "down the road"

Our recruiting targets at the end of the year should be as many first and second round picks as possible. If we need to trade some older players to obtain them, so be it.

The key to trading / drafting is to keep a balanced squad - both age-wise & position-wise. Need to carefully manage a list to ensure we don't get into difficulty where the age of the squad is out of kilter (eg. too old like Carlton a few years back, or too inexperienced like the current Cats squad). My main concern is the lack of middle-tier age players coming on, to take-over from our guns. We can't trade them all away or we will be in strife. Some big decisions will need to be made at the end of the year as to how best regenerate our list.

Would you trade McLeod?

A serious question. Who would you put up for trade ? I can't see any clubs going for Hart, Smart, Clarke, Burns, Bassett, Biglands, Torney or Carey. Those that haven't retired aren't that great that their age outweighs another club recruiting them. Mark Stevens looks like his career is shot.

Of your 'older' players the only ones that are left that are worth chasing are one's you'd probably never trade - Welsh, Edwards, Goodwin, Riccuito, McLeod. Looking at the Crows list, the only way I can see you getting lots of first and second round picks, other then a shocking finish, is being willing to trade an untradeable player - or do what Port did with Barry Brooks, be willing to trade a talented youngster to get another that plays a different position.

We don't need another half forward flanker. But seriously, McLeod is probably your best bet for a good deal, but you'd have to play it right through the year....he's got a good rating in Victoria and there's got to be someone willing to take an unwise punt on a guy with recurring injuryand star quality.

Everyone has a price. If we could get the first 5 picks in next years draft for him then yes.

Unless it's a ridiculously good deal like that then no. Good clubs don't go getting rid of superstars who have been good to the club unless they demand to be traded or extraordinary circumstances like Carey's at the Roos. It's bad for culture/morale.

I'm thinking someone more along the lines of Goodwin would be the best we'd trade. He doesn't have the profile that McLeod does. Although even then I'm not sure the club would go through with it.

I agree with McLeod23. Forget chasing the big names which cost an arm and a leg, we should be trading some good but expendable players for first round picks. And some fringe players for second round picks.

I would've attempted to trad Perrie last year and could possibly have got a late 1st rounder for him or an early 2nd round pick for sure. At the end of this season his value will have dropped again.

I was suggesting the Crows do that three years ago!
I have always held the belief that there is no such thing as an untradeable player.

Your thoughts on the upcoming draft Porthos? Due to the increase in minimum age isn't what's available this year just last year's scraps? Maybe a better option to trade star for star than star for draft picks this year?

e.g. McLeod for Ottens.

Well its only three months difference so there should be a good lot left. Also word on the trading board is that its not a bad year for key position players. I'm pretty out of touch with any more info than that these days.

As a general though, an unwillingness to trade club near-legends with a little left in the tank is going to see rebuilding hurt a fair bit more. Goodwin could be a good move though.

McLeod for Ottens has no chance....its a Carey-like gamble to go for McLeod with his knee and ideally the other party would want to avoid such immediate possible backfire. It'd have to be heavily draft pick related.

I am pretty sure that the likes of Biglands, Bassett and Torney would attract interest but non of them will get you a 1st round pick.

We fought off a number of clubs last year just to keep Biglands. At the trading period Port made inquiries about Bassett but we said no and Torney was talking to a number of clubs before he was part of Carey trade.

We don't have players that we can afford to trade to get those picks. There is no point in getting those picks if you are going to screw them up.

It all need to start with recruiting department. I am pretty certain that the likes of Roo, Goody, McLeod and Hart will not be traded.

Yeah its only 2 or 3 month difference in age criteria and I think you are right about it being a good draft for talls. Just read an article on the afl.com about the U17 series against Ireland and there is some tall timber there. I think there are 6 players over 197 cm.

I can't remember the last time AIS squad had that many talls.

oops, I had 9 months in my head.

Back to my original point ... some of these suggestions are great, but I have zero confidence in our recruitment to be able to pull it off.

McLeod for Brennan & Brown?

Our blokes are more likely to ask for Alastair Lynch because we don't have a FF at the moment.

Agree with Porthos wrt McLeod being your best value.

You will probably get two early picks for him plus a midrange player if you're lucky. Every year that will decrease a little.

Now what is better for the Crows over the next five to six years.
Will you win a premiership with McLeod in the side over the next couple of years. If yes keep him, if not food for thought.

Mcleod should not be traded......but to throw a name up maybe trade him to port for Chad Cornes and Stuart Dew

but the most players from our reqular 22 l would trade in one season would be 6 trades

The six possibles l would trade would be:
Simon Goodwin
Nathan Bassett,
Ian Perrie andTyson Stengline ( Offer them to freo for Byron Shammer)
try and off load Mark stevens to any team for a top 40 pick
and maybe Mattner or Rutten for some depth in our squad

In a word, yes.

The Crows will have significant salary cap space at the end of this year.

The Crows will want to obtain a couple of quality players - at least one kpp.

To get quality, you have to offer quality.

With McLoed's name on the table - the Crows would be offering quality without giving up much in the way of current performance - and also could retain round 1 draft picks.

Have some faith......Macca is a gun.....and of we trade him so many of you who have been calling for him to be taded would be crying. DO NOT TRADE HIM........if he is traded that person who traded him is a compleate moron and is a football idiot

Who have you traded Hird after his foot injury in 99 and his for slump

I simply can not understand some morons who call them self Adelaide crows supporters and are asking for the AFC to trade it best player it would be like the Chicago bulls trading Michael Jordan. So what he has had a few bad games give me a break.

Yes - definatley get Alan Stewart!

As for potential picks in this years draft here is a link to the U 17 AIS squad. They are playing games in the next couple of weeks so it will be interesting to see who performs well.

From a Crows perspective, a couple of SA based players to watch are Cameron Wood (203 cm) and Chad Gibson (194cm)

Serious? The way Brown is currently being hyped, you would be lucky to get him alone for McLeod, without throwing Brennan's name in. And it's not as if Brisbane is short of midfielders.

I am assuming that we would have already spoken to Rehny about this kid.

This Chad Gibson bloke, where is he from and what position does he play.

I think there is no secret that we need a good young ruckman, a good KPP (who is eaqually goodt at either end) and some gun midfielders.

Keep dreaming. The only one that will get you quality is Goodwin.

Bassett won't get you a first round pick. Perrie and stenglein for Schammer?????? Are you for real?????? There is no way in hell Freo would go for that. Thats like saying we are offered R. Shaw and Ben Johnson for Graham Johncock. Would you be happy if Pies offered us that for Stiffy?????? I don't think so.

No way a club would trade a top 40 pick for a player that has a ****ed up knee with no cure.

Mattner and Rutten would have no real trade value what so ever. Rutten might attract some mild interest but nothing worth considering.

Remember quality for quality NOT quantity for quality.
