I can think of more than a few successes they've had, man. I can also think of more than a few people who are going to retort you with numerous examples.

My own view with a lot of this is I stay right out of this 'poaching' stuff - I know it's not that but it's just the word I can think of now. I reckon there are times to look at the market and times when things should be focused on the blokes at the club for the rest of the current season. Saying we'll have Cooney in a couple of years, etc - that doesn't sit well with me at all.

Didn't Brisbane pinch Graham "gubby" Allen from the pies in the mid 1990's the same time Lee Mathews when up there and look at what them teo have been able to achive.

It isn't James Fantasia fault, wasn't he was being talked about as the same sort of "recruiting god" after 97 98.....but it only a footy merry go round with form.


Any body can pick talent in the top 10....it a real judge of talent to find a bit of gold in all the crap.......find a gun with some second and thrid round picks thats where you will find who has the recruiting knowlage.

But tell me, why is it that Port have Shaun Burgoyne, Steven Salopek and Brett Ebert, and Adelaide don't?

That's just for starters.

Because his Dad played for Port - which meant that Port Adelaide could claim him under the father son rule and Adelaide couldn't??

Just to clarify a point here, Hawthorn were forced to swap for a player since Jade Rawlings was technically still on our list after trade week. The Bulldogs had to have some insurance that we would not do a backflip and re-sign Rawlings after we'd agreed to let him go through to the pre-season draft.

Enter Danny Jacobs, ensuring that we could not, under no circumstance sign Jade Rawlings due to our salary cap. Hope that makes sense.

The point it that the 'Veale Deal' was a one off, and Jacobs for such a high price was a necessity both Hawthorn and the Bulldogs had to deal with. Most here are correct, Burton would be worth a latish first round pick.

They have assemebled some fantastic talent which is more that we can say for ourselves.

However, I will say this, they could afford to d that because of all teh concessions they got once they got into the AFL. They were able to pick up some fantastic young talent and keep adding talent with draft picks. Eventually they got great depth in the squad which allowed them to trade better players for draft top 10 draft picks so they can keep regenerating their squad with quality youth. This would be considerably harder in adelaide's case.

Macca old mate, you got me on that one. But substitute, say... hmm either of Chad of Kane Cornes for that one. Are you saying Ports rectuiting is crap too?

Ports trading since its inception has been just about the best in the league. Pickett, Wakelin, Montgomery, Bishop, Che C-Collins, Schofield, Hardwick, Cochrane. All are/were in our first team for years, all have contributed quite a bit to the side. You wont find better trading than that. And who did we lose? Eagleton, Cummings, M Stevens and a bunch of draft picks.

Our drafting started off average minus teh few star pickups (Stevens at 25, Cornes, Carr) but has picked up excellently in the past few years.

But yes....we have been terrible at recruiting

In fact I'm rather envious of Port's overall recruiting which definitely has outshone the Crows in the same period of time.

Chris Pelchen heads up Port's Victorian recruiting (since about 1999) where Alan mostly does SA & WA. I think its fair to say the the vast majority of our duds come from Victoria.

Crow-mosone you must be missing a few if you think Port's recruiting has been anything short of excellent. Since they're inception they have done a hell of a lot better at assembling talent than we have.

Kristof, let's not forget ever since Stewart turned around centrals he could no wrong in your eyes.

let's get some examples in the last 5 -6 years.
1. trading:
Byron pickett was not a recruiting coup, he was being hawked around to anyone. They traded pick 13 (schammer) & 31. North felt he wasn't worth the cash he was being paid, and now this is a great recruiting triumph? No more so than North picking up Leigh Brown for peanuts, Collingwood for woewoedin, etc.
Hardwick - pick 31 & 47. ok trade, but essendon are pretty pleased also with what they got.
Darry Wakelin - no.4 in 2000 draft. probably a good deal for them, but not a steal either.
Stuart cochrane for Michael Stevens. absolute pasting, cochrane isn't much and stevens is a draft disaster.
Matthew bishop for no.42 - fair trade.
Brett Montgomery - good trade for them. Though they gave up a lot at the time, and Eagleton has certainly come good again in the last and a bit.
Cockatoo Collins - pick 23 (ladhams) was fair enough at the time. But not a great trade.
Schofield - no.45 good trade. this player always had ability.

2. drafting: they have as many duds as anyone else, yet we think they didn't.
2002 - too early to tell. but salopek fell to them at no.6, and is yet to prove that he should have been taken much earlier.
Stephen Gilham no.16 - too early to tell really.
2001 Barry Brooks no.15, St kilda offered them a great deal the next year, and they took it. fair enough, but lets so how their actual selection goes, he hasn't shown anything so far.
2001 Damon white no.62, might turn into something useful amd they have been talking him up for a while now.
2000 Shaun Burgoyne no. 12 - please he's shown nothing more than a little talent, and is at the crossroads right now.
2000 Kane Cornes no.20 - still not setting world on fire, ok player. seems to be standing still in his development
2000 Allan Murray no. 35 - no longer at club
2000 Dominic Cassisi no. 50 - nothing much
1999 Paul Koulouriotis no.12 - no longer at club
1999 Cain Ackland no.27 - ha ha
1999 Grent Guerra no.28 - no longer at club. still no world beater
1999 Steven Brosnan no.57 - who?
1998 Michael Stevens no.5 - worst pick since rombotis
1998 Josh Carr no.7 - good pick. player better than advertised.
1998 Adam Morgan no.37 - please. not at club anymore, and people say we shouldn't have picked Kenny over Pavlich. this is a howler.
1998 Toby Thurstans no. 39 - nothing much
1998 Derek Murray no. 54 - no longer at club, brother just as crap.

They got a couple of players through the rookie list as well.

I never said they were complete rubbish, I think they have done ok. but can someone please tell me what is so great here, that we need to move heaven and hell to get their recruiting manager???
this does not strike me as a league leading effort.
