I heard that Frank Costa may be retiring at the end of the year? I hope not, as he has been a very good servant of the club. However, if he does, I thought of someone who would be a good replacement- DARYL SOMERS

Think about it. Firstly, he is a great supporter of the club, and has contributed much money towards it (at a GFC Function I was at, he bought half the stock on auction (which added up to a couple of million),

Secondly, he will bring publicity to the club because he is a media personality. Collingwood has Eddie, Hawthorn has Jeff Kennett. It brings attention, and maybe sponsors. I know not everyone likes him, but he would bring a profile that can only help the club.

Thirdly, he can create and promote new ideas. He co-created "Hey, Hey It's Saturday" and ran it successfully for over twenty years, he brought Cirque De Solieil to Australia, he has made ballroom a ratings success with "Dancing With The Stars". He comes up with ideas which have worked. Imagine what promotional ideas he could bring to Geelong Football Club.

Let's face it, Daryl would be good in this role, if he wanted it. He may not be able to do it at this stage. But it would be a good move if when Costa does step down, that he endorse Daryl Somers as his successor.:)

I don't think it's as silly as you all think. Some sports management or administration would strengthen his case, but it's not a bad option.

no, steve bracks is his Vice President.

and that stupid puppet from hey hey its saturday is the junior vice president
while red symonds will now be the microphone bloke on matchdays

What's wrong with you guys? Why be hating on Daryl?

I met Daryl Somers at a GFC B& F one year. I got to sit down and talk to him. For a celebrity, he was one of the most unpretentious people I have met. He treated me like I had been on television for twenty years, and like I was the celebrity. He asked me about myself, and acted like just another person rather than a T.V. star. In fact he left some of the past players (e.g. Polly Framer, Sam Newman) to shame.

You guys want to have a go at Daryl, because it is the thing to do. Are you sheep? Do you just follow what others do all the time? Just a question, how much money have you contributed to Geelong Football Club over the years? A lot less than Daryl, I imagine. He has more to offer the club than you ever will by your criticism.

I want to know, if Daryl did become president of GFC, would you then not buy a membership? I hope he does get the job, because it will seperate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to our supporters. Those who don't buy a membership for reasons like this are people we don't want as members anyway.:thumbsd:

Yawn...... I contribute alot to the club each year and dont use that word "star" and "Daryl" in the same sentence.

Why not keep things as they are, and just bump up Andrews to become the new president?

Keeps the stability off field, if the majority of the board come back as well.

But we'd be linked to Dancing With The Stars, not sure I'd want that.:p

EDIT: Didn't Daryl have some money issues a while back, bankruptcy? I may be wrong but I could swear that happened.

I'll give you the benfit of a serious answer.

Daryl is undoubtedly a fantastic supporter of the club, who puts both money and alot of his time into supporting and foing things for the cats and for that, he has my greatest respect and admiration. But being president isn't just a figurehead or a fanatical supporter. He or she has alot of responsibility in the direction that the club is heading, such as overseeing the appointment and structure of the clubs senior management. You mentioned both Kennet and Eddie, love them or loathe them, you can't deny they are movers and shakers in the business world. Costa is, and whoever replaces Costa should be as well. Daryl isn't.

I saw Dancing with the Stars the other night and if i saw right i believe Brian Cook was in the audience. Not reading anything into it but who know.

FWIW Daryl should not be our next president.

I reckon you need a businessman to take the role. I don't think people would take Daryl that seriously if he was elected Pres. It would be like if Freo elected Rove MCManus as theirs! Leave him at number one ticket holder. ;)

Seriously though, who could replace him? Andrews would be a safe option but any other Geelong businessman?
