Watching the finals so far, one thing has stood out. A reliable 60m pass is worth it's weight in gold. If a player is running hard to a wing, a long kick over his head allowing him to run onto the ball is priceless.

Similarly when switching the play in the backline, 2 kicks getting you onto the opposing wing are again priceless. We lack these big kicks. I often shake my head when Duffield or Ibbotson take the kickouts, try their utmost and the ball lands just outside 50. They've just executed a 45m kick, which as a designated kicker they should be able to do off a few steps.

We have Pavlich and Mundy who are big kicks. Morabito also but who knows how his kicking will be after the knee reconstruction. Ibbotson is OK on occasion but unreliable to me. I can't think of another 60m kicker in our team. Hill can deliver 50m rockets but not the big bombs like the aforementioned.

I think it's something that distinguishes the best sides. Accurate kicking is important but long accurate kicking even more so.

It's a theme with the whole lack of explosive strength.

There's a really basic exercise on the total hip machine that is great for leg drive, sprinters and jumpers do it, and will easily add 5-10m on your kicking, that I'm sure we do not do.

But we also aren't strong enough, physical enough. Blah blah blah. Same shit for eternity at the club.

Suban has a decent kick on him, he just needs to stay on the field, but yes i agree we need someone with a booming acurate kick

Not another fitness related thread, well it wasn't until Chops_a_musnt arrived.

Ibbotson can kick 50 easy, he's kicked goals from outside 50. Duffield can as well, majority of the time the kickouts are 65 away from goal when they land on a ruckman.

To be honest, there are not that many 60m long kicks in the competition that aren't forwards.

OP is right, long ccurate kicks are gold, but brades is also right, Duffield (normally) can comfortably clear 60m, Ibbo on a run can too. The issue this season for Duff especially has been getting his hands on it enough in the first place - among a few other things.

Is this where Chops creates a mini black hole by declaring we need to focus on power based training over endurance, while arguing that it will have no negative impact on injuries?

Can't have it both ways Chop Chop.

Suban has kicked some very nice, accurate long kicks. Needs to get his fitness up because a player like him would be invaluable to the team.

Pitt was recruited for this;timing and everything in the right place at the right time. It's exactly the same as cracking a stockwhip!!At point of contact/crack the skinny little tip of the whip is doing 800kph or something silly.Pure technique.

If we've still got an early pick left this year;

Brad McKenzie (SA – Mid/Def)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 29/05/1993
Recruited from: Sturt
Style: Dyson Heppell/ Trent McKenzie
Player comparison:
Range: 10-25
Profile: The thing that stands out with McKenzie is his skills by foot, is the absolute feature of his game. Has a great penetrating left foot kick on him and can consistently find targets or kick long goals from 60m out without any difficulty. Even under pressure executes by foot without any difficulty. Seems to have a really good understanding of the game and reads the play well. Inside work is also very good. Was one of SA’s best midfielders in the u18 champs and had a couple of big games. A bit of a flanker but can play midfield. Quality ball user.

It wont.

All the top teams make that trade off, and they make it in balance of what I favour.

morabito, pav, mundy, pitt, suban and hill i would say would all travel the distance on a 60 meter kick comfortably and accurately. would be nice having a trent mckenzie (GC17) like player though

Watching the way Carlton used Yarran this year I can't help but think Hill would be worth a try as the kick-in guy sometimes. Play on the self, run bounce a couple of times, kick and all of a sudden we are 70 or 80 M up the ground.

+1. We have Hill for his kick and pace. Taking the need for physicality and finding the ball out of the equation is only going to help his performance. It'll help with the tagging aswell, he can lose his opponent and get some hand offs on his way through.

That would be great if we didn't lack the confidence to play on allowing the opposition to flood back. Lost count of the number of times that happened this season as opposed to last.

Also, as a byline did anyone notice, despite the result, that against the Bulldogs we were a lot happier to go up the guts instead of fannying around near the boundary line...That was one thing to like about that game for me.

There is no point kicking it 60m if there is no-one to go to. Most long kicks this season ended up going to a large pack. This is more of a problem than the actual kicking.
