Roast Our Terrible Depth

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

With seeing how Bad our VFL Team has been recently this Season and hardly any of the Players you watch and at least say this Prospect/Player could be at least a Good AFL Player

Players that are not at the Moment there only 4 you could say that about them in:

  • Charlie West
  • Sam Swadling
  • Jai Saxena
  • Joel Cochran

The rest look barley VFL Level and the Main ones that are like that are:

  • HDM
  • TJ
  • Smit

Also does not help that can't Trust too play much at all

We intentionally cut it all our depth, so that new players would get games. Anderson, Allan, Parker and Steele all showed a bit last night. Hayes and Steene also did before injuries. A couple of others have gotten games and will get more in the second half of the season - a couple of others will get games too.

I'm a bit more bullish Dave. Our game plan is one of the best but just lacking another quality player or two. I think we'll have a strong second half to the season.

Play the kids
But oh, don’t play the kids because you think they are bad

Can’t have it both ways.

Hayes
Allan
Anderson
Parker
Harrison
West

have I missed any? These are the 'kids'. how many more do you want to play? Swadling may get a go soon, Buller could still be considered a 'kid' in AFL terms. Saxena is another, but probably wont debut this year. Way too early to put a line through Prindable, Cochran, Howes & McCarthy.

Yeah, we've missed a few with HDM, Ryan and probably TJ, but is it really that bad overall?

I think we have discussed this ad nauseum TD. Our gamble to prioritize senior players nearly paid off last year, fell short by one game.

Yes we have had poor drafting from the last few years of hine, which is unfortunately biting us in the rear end.

But obree and leppa have gotten to work on replenishing the list and we are starting to see results .

Already have had hayes, West, Cochran, angus, and swadling (going to happen any week now) debut. Saxena could debut by the end of the year , same with prindable.

That's not including the msd pickup of roan steele which is looking very good as well.

It will be a process, looking at atleast 2 years where we will undergo a mini rebuild. Just have to be patient with it.

What's done is done under hine. O bree has already given us reasons to trust him.

It's play the kids and when you play them, it's play the other kids.

We have some great players coming through, all those you mentioned. Some of them take longer than others, it's every once in a while you get a player like Nick who can come in and be a star from day 1.

No, not those kids, the other kids.

Pod should probably be on the list even though 26.

Pumcher and Coe no exposed form, but they look likely on paper and at least haven’t stuffed up yet.

I think the question should be 'is it (are they) really that good rather than 'that bad'. What potentially elite or semi-elite players do we have on our list?

I'd say it fell short by about 10 weeks. We limped to the line but were never really close to in form from about Rd 15-16.

Don't judge a player until they have hit 50 games. Until then I would strongly recommend we hold off on being harsh with our assessments.

Degoey didn't burst out of the gates. It took him a while to really hit his game breaking levels.

Nick has really skewed our view on how long it should take a player to prove themselves that they belong at the top level, he became elite within 1 season.

I am not so much making an assessment as asking a question and making a statement regarding the ceilings of our young players.

I disagree. We were well it until halftime in the PF against the lions. They then just took us apart after that.

Funnily enough, you could argue that we played them tougher than the cats played them in the gf. There was also the psychological effect of losing pendles early.

Yes we limped into the finals , I put that on the conditioning staff miscalculating our training loads. Something didn't go right , it literally sapped the energy out of the entire team.

So I can't really fault Collingwood's approach last year.

We got a good run with this group.

Personally the sample size is way to small to make that call.

The good thing is, they have all shown game influencing moments at various stages.

So there is a lot to build off.

As your name states, it really is a new dawn now at this club.

In the back end of the year we never got close to playing as well as we did earlier in the year.

The PF was one great quarter and three horrible quarters. Take out the second quarter and the scoreline was Bris 15.7.97 to Coll 5.5.35.

Won't be much Difference between the 2

Shows why good Chance we have to go Backwards to go Forward

To answer the question of the thread,
We knew we would have no depth this season after trading/delisting the likings of Cox, WHE, Titch and Checkers.
This season was always going to be a season about 'playing the kids' which we have been doing.
The second answer to this question is that Ryan, HDM and TJ would of hopefully be putting their hand up for selection. But the trio don't look close to making it at all.
So yes, our depth this year is quite shit but thats the price you pay when you get rid of some key senior players.
Our depth won't be a problem next year.

I would like to see them actually get good runs at it and not be last in, first out. Rotate some of the senior players out for rests rather than Parker playing 1, dropped for 3, playing 1, dropped for 3…Or Anderson getting dropped, West and Buller getting dropped and not being replaced by a key forward.

Many wrote Allan off, but suddenly after getting a few games in a row and more actual midfield minutes, he’s looking promising.

Buller looked promising against Geelong then gets dropped because he couldn’t handle suddenly being second ruck mid match in Sydney.

West would make a great 3rd tall, yet we played him at times as our no1 target with Long as the second target jumping into him more than the opposition.

We’re not making an impact this season, whilst 2 of the top 3 are injured, the rest should be given the next 3-4 games at a minimum, especially with the draw we’ve got coming up.

Terrible drafting by Derek Hine after Jason Taylor left the club in 2013 for whatever reason (I'm not aware of the politics at the time) plus keeping aging players after the 2023 premiership and topping up with Shultz and Houston rather than going back to the draft, puts us in the current status. To judge recruiters you need a crystal ball to advance five years, so you can't form a judgement on our recruiting since Derek Hine was fired. FWIW I think Shane O'Bree is doing a very good job with the drafting hand he's had. For the first time I can remember we have a balanced list between midfielders, flankers, defenders and forwards. It's the quality of some of those players on the list you can question. All the top midfielders recruited in the first round of the national draft are those that deliver a premiership and how many first round draft picks have we had?

Think of the draft picks mate, it's a win win

Well while I was watching the Dogs Game.

I was actually thinking IF season goes West and we fall down the ladder quickly that we can get a High Draft Pick
