I'm sure we've all heard this as a reason for a player not being available to play. What I would like to know though: Are they actually suffering from the flu, or a cold? Most of them are only affected for a few days, which would suggest it's just a common cold.

given the availability of flu vaccines it would negligent for clubs to not vaccinate all their players/key staff and risk losing personel to the flu. Chances are the players listed with flu have something else.

cold = runny nose, sore throat, cough
flu = no runny nose, sore throat, fever, aching limbs/back (onset over the course of a few hours)

people who havent had flu before often label colds etc as flu - once u've had it, you will know the difference :)

Windy Hill Flu can last from 1 day to a season. :D

Actually reminds me of the Richard Tambling stubbed toe which lasted for 10 weeks (but they did admit a bit of back, hammy & OP involved)

A flu vaccine doesn't mean you definately won't get the flu. It does mean that if you do contract the flu you're likely to get a less severe dose of it and get over it alot quicker. Add that to the the fact these players are highly tuned athletes whose fitness and general health are much greater than members of the general public, and it's very likely that yes, they have got a dose of the flu, but are equipped to get over the worst of it much quicker than most people.

Its a well known fact that highly tuned elite althetes can be more sucspetible to flu and colds than "regular" humans. Not sure why, but I read it somewhere. Thats why Chris Tarrant has the flu and Lance Whitnall never gets sick.
