I know I'm getting old, but why does just about every f.arken question to a footballer or football coach in the AFL these days, ask them how proud are they about what that player did, or another player did or what the team achieved to win a game? And then when not prompted say how proud they are of something else. And yes it happens in so many other high profile sports.

The word proud must have been used 300 times tonight. Good human maybe half that number. Sure have self respect and self regard.

FMD you are well paid to train, not have to do another job, to do a job that is fun, to specialize and deliver the goods.

Never heard Neil Armstrong talk about how proud he was to land The Eagle successfully on moon surface, to find the right spot to land and not crash, and not take so long to find that spot, so he didn't run out of fuel and abort the first moon landing and blow billions of dollars to get to that point. And neither did the other 11 blokes who walked on the moon.

Travelling to another celestial body and successfully returning home is a lot bigger deal to be proud of than booting a piece of dead animal around an oval.

Those guys said I was paid to be trained to do a job, and I did what I was trained to do. That's it, no palaver about it.

I blame bloody Tony Robins and the self help gurus who say you can do anything and to tell yourself how proud you are of what you do. Proud to mop up the floor. Proud to cook up a few vegetables, proud to successfully tie up your shoelaces. Its become an epidemic.

🤩

Chris Dittmar is a better MC than him, and that is saying something.

I wonder if Neil Armstrong was proud that he helped Mr Gorsky achieve his dream? :tearsofjoy:

I blame Jarrod Walsh. Awful interviewer. Just awful.
He is a shocker but listen to other interviews of AFL players and a you must be proud of ... will be asked.

Has there ever been an event with so much repetitious lauding of "amazing" and "incredible" "humans"?

It's a very convenient thing to measure themselves by given it's entirely subjective and not able to be quantified in any way. Things like winning games and premierships are more difficult from that perspective.

Also, there's no reason to believe that the players, coaches and everyone else who works at the club are not merely a typical representation of broader society. I'm sure there actually are some amazing humans at the club but also some complete assholes and probably most people falling somewhere between.

They're all living in la-la land.

If only you could be an amazing human and win premierships.

SANFL team became better once the AFL-listed players either got promoted to AFL or out with injury. Pretty damning that a "semi-professional" team performed better once full-time professional players in the team weren't in the picture.
Its been that way all the time, during summos time it was definitely better having him, Sharrad, Robbie Young, Tom Gray, Luke Reynolds, Nathan Rudloff, Sid Masters, guys like that running around. I think 2018 would've been the only time when the top up list was very weak, Summo was the only senior player surrounded by kids, I reckon Mitch Mead, Levi Proud and Sam Davidson were the only other decent top ups, so we just got smacked all year.
