hopefully pav, plays 80 -90% of his footy this season ,inside the 50m arc.playing out of the goal square ,namely.benefits, heap more goals for freo, due to him recieving superior foot passes like never before.prolong his career.keep the best & second kpd close to the goal mouth.Thoughts!

No
He is a CHF
If he has a matchup where he feels he can use his height an strength to his advantage he will play deeper in forward 50 but otherwise he will spend most his time 35m-middle of ground.

i agree with sman. if he is outside 50 he really opens up the forward line is teams have to respect the long bomb goals. while capable he should play chf and retire to ff in 2 years time to play in the 2012-3 back to back flags

Somewhere between the 2 positions.

I'd have Dessie in the square, Pav about 25-30 metres from goal and Ballantyne in the pocket as the only 3 regulars inside 50. Obviously there will be rotations and Sandilands will spend time forward but that's the structure I'd go with for round one.

With delivery from Mundy (the best kick in our team) He's bound to kick a crap load this year!

Honeslty,Pav is the only freo player capable of playing FF,effectively.Bulk, speed, skill, knowing when to lead.Pav is the only one with this combo. His goal output would be 15- 20% higher playing out of the square i believe.Run,MJ,and Keplar thru CHF.MJ especially. As for Des, his body just won't allow.

I would suggest Hill, Suban & Walters will all give him a run for that title.

I don't see why Pav can't play closer to goal. Chris Mayne and MJ are more than capable of playing the half forward line. I think we'll probably see the sort of circle work rotation where players move from FF up the ground and across and back taking turns to present. With the extended running from all players to link up with ball coming out of defence, the traditional roles are all but gone.

He is too talented to play close to goal, too long away from the action. Just last year he was playing on the ball!!! He will rest close to goal and also leading up and then running back towards goals will demolish key defenders. They won't have the tank to keep up with him.

having said that he will get plety of attention and our forward support cast needs to make the most of their relative freedom.

I also love seeing him fend off a puny mid and bomb in from 55.

This poster for coach!!!! Or at least get dom having weekly lunch meetings with Harvey, just like GJ and Mundy.

Pav at full forward and expect to see him being triple teamed again as backman play of their men abit to take up pavs leading space and be in position to help out as soon as ball is headed in his area.

Chf he leads up the ground to provide backmen targets around midfield, plus has free roam of forward 50.
When he has an advantage over defenders can push forward to the FF type position.
But he is most suited to 30m+ out.
Murphy is best suited to FF due to poor work rate

Alot harder to triple team Pav at CHF than at FF 10-40m out

Agree. We're seeing more subtleties in starting positions, blocks on defenders to free up leading forwards etc, the traditional structures are going the way of the VCR.

This is particularly apparent in the forward 50m. Late last season I nearly did my head in trying to figure out what positions Mayne and Balla had and why they seemed to be all over the place. After a bit of research I found out that it's a variant of the Herring Bone structure, which is really no more than the forwards setting up a huddle between CHF and FF.

Hopefully the diagram below explains it. You'll notice that I've gone for a 5 man forward set-up as I feel that with ascendancy in the ruck and a stronger, more experienced midfield the ball will likely be coming in to our forwards a lot quicker. Therefore we should play the spare man off the HB line and give Pav, Chopper and Balla more space to lead into, while Des and Kep give the dummy leads and/or apply the blocks on the defenders.

It's a lot harder because the opposition would much rather see him taking marks 80-90 metres from goal than inside 50. No one's going to triple team a guy up near the wing.

I'll be surprised if Bradley plays round one.

Tend to agree but didn't want to dash Clivewaterhousen's pre-season hopes just yet:p

But seriously, it comes down to him or Johnson for the back-up ruck role, and in deciding this weight has to be given to who's more mobile over the ground and which one performs best close to goal.

For mine, MJ is more of a defender than a forward and while he was recovering from injury in the second half of last year Kep did a lot to improve his claims, particularly in the goal square where he did much to disrupt the opposition defence structures.

MJ probably shades him as a ruckman, but Kep edges him out on the mobility stakes, so it'll be a headache for the selectors IMO.

There is absolutely no way MJ will be left out of the Rd 1 22 if he's fit. They may well play Keps as well but Jonno is an absolute certainty. Just because some people here don't rate him I'm pretty sure Freo coaching staff do.

I've actually noticed a few players are rated much higher on oppo boards and threads. MJ, Grover, Duffman for a start get serious respect from everywhere except here it seems (although the Duff bashing is not what it once was, I was practically the only person sticking up for him a few years ago). I suppose some players are bound to become targets for their own supporters. I really like LRT from Sydney but many of their fans diss him all the time.

Opposition supporters aren't to be trusted since many rate Thornton. ;)

There's room in the side for Johnson and Bradley but it's unlikely to happen round one unless we get a couple of injuries between now and then.

You can't have Pavlich, Sandilands, Tarrant, Mundy, McPharlin, Johnson, Bradley, Grover, Solomon in the same line up at Subi in March and I think Bradley will be at the bottom of that list in Harvey's eyes.

Agree, MJ has attracted a lot of flak, as do many of our defenders because they've had the ball and opposition midfielders repeatedly streaming in like Cheyennes at Little Big Horn. Eventually they have to make a mistake and when they do the whole world wants their scalps.

But while MJ might ordinarily make the starting line-up he's likely to be a bit rusty, and possibly still tentative after the injury - at the last training session I went to he was running laps and had both ankles encased in some unusual casings (orthotics?)

By the way I'm a big fan of LRT too, looks like he was raised on the same training regime as Kep

surely clarke would have to be in the mix for rnd 1.the other two are never going to become 1st rucks of this club.MJ's skills are better all round in my opinion.i think it was the night MJ rolled his ankle,he looked good up front.
