Firstly the whole thing about Tredrea started because someone tried to say that he is better than Carey. Noone is denying how good Tredrea is as a player, but you have to be realistic about where he sits among the best of all time.

The fact of the matter is Tredrea is a better player than Pavlich and if Adelaide had a choice between the two I would prefer Adelaide to chase Tredrea. Pavlich has adopted a soft mental attitude from playing for the softest team in the AFL and i agree that he hasnt lived up to anywhere near what we all believed his potential was. Noone is making claims that Pavlich is a superstar merely making a statement that we would be silly not to try and recruit him if he wanted to come home and play for Adelaide.

It really wasn't about who was the better player, just about the attitudes of some about the types of player they're perceived to be.

As for the Carey comparison, well I had my say on that ... Carey is up there pretty much on his own. So I think I'm being realistic. Your take on that topic was more than reasonable.

But did you target his mum ??

Rubbish ! - he's never played physical footy - Never!!!

Not going to change now, not under any coach.

Once again we confuse size with playing style - Biglands "Meh"!
Where did I mentioned anything about him playing physical footy??????

I just said NC could get Pav to play better than he is now and turn him into a gun foward. I never said anything about Craig making him play more physical

You mentioned NC getting the best out if him - He's been AA so I think some people think he's a quality player, and he does play some good footy.

However for his size he plays like a midfielder and DOES NOT use his size - this frustrates me and if he's playing CHF you need a degree of physicality IMO (Robran  )

No you didn't mention NC getting him to play more physical but someone has to ;)

Pav is more of a "finesse" player and he will never be a physical presence. Having said that, I also don't think he is as soft as some people make him out to be. I am yet to see him pull out of a contest. He is by no means a tarzan but he ain't jane either ;)

Finesse aka SOFT!

You have to be in a contest to pull out of it.

Seriously he is a very good player BUT he's not the type of bigman I believe we need to bring into the club.

St Kildas Harvey arguably one of the games greatest but he never hurt teams and I certainly wouldn't have put my hand to recruit him - doesn't diminish where he will stand in the games history.

There is no way you would have seen Port recruit Harvey!!

I believe Pavlich to be in a similar bracket and agin it doesn't mean he's a bad player at all but not for the Crows.

We'll agree to disagree on this one ;)

your right about harvey, I remember Blights instructions to Sugar in the 97 GF. Keep him behind the pack, never let him forward of the contest. He will settle for cheap possessions, and you just let him have it.

By boxing him out, he got 20 harmless touches behind play, chipping sideways etc. What was interesting is this explained Blight's feelings about him as a player, which can't have helped when he went to coach them.

Exactly!

Harvey will still be seen as one of the greatest though - Back to school yard footy - choosing teams:

Would you choose Harvey (in his prime) or Judd?

Would you choose Pavlich or Roo?

And why??

IMO because we all love that aggression in a footy player or the player that can really hurt you when he gets the footy ;)

Heh, this debate has taken me down memory lane to some back and forth I had with macca19 about Harvey in an old thread on this board entitled 'worst Brownlow winner' - my nominations were Brad Hardie, Shane Woewodin and Harvey x 2 (probably harsh on Banger in hindsight).

Macca19's reaction and my reply, which echoes your sentiments to an extent.

DT,

for me the thing is this. I genuinely feel Harvey has not been the player some suggest, but that he was prolific and ineffective.

however, if he were a crows player we would argue the opposite until the cows came home. all of us.

we'd be wrong ;) but we would defend him to the hilt as a double brownlow winner.

If you put a St Kilda jumper on Ben Cousins and a West Coast jumper on Harvey could you notice the difference? Stat builders IMO... its their effectiveness that is the judge of a good footballer. Greg Williams was rated because 70% of his disposals were effective and they hurt

:D So true.

The Brownlow is no real guide to a player anyway. We don't rate the umpires so why would we rate their opinions on players either.

Too many great players haven't won one for it to be taken too seriously. It's a nice little bragging point for supporters & a good way for the winner to negotiate a new contract.

Gee one bad game and Robert Walls plays him out to be someone of a Rhys Shaw standard. What a joke, Pavlich is a great exponent of the game and need not be compared with others. If he plays his best football in the midfield/backline then so be it, play him in the midfield or backline and let him have anot her stellar season like last year. :)

Good post but I would say it is a guide but not the be all and end all guide.

Wayne Carey widely regarded as one of the best to ever play .... no Brownlow.

To those who say that Pavlich isn't hard enough or is merely a flair player, he's currently third in the league for contested marks (sitting on 10, behind Richo with 13 and Hamill on 11), which is a fair effort given Freo's appalling chippy-chippy-wide style of play and reluctance to kick long to a contest.

Teddy Whitten, Polly Farmer, Barry Cable, Kevin Bartlett, Alex Jesaulenko, Peter Knights, Leigh Matthews, Robbie Flower, Simon Madden, Gary Ablett, Craig Bradley, Paul Roos, Peter Matera, Shaun Rehn, Darren Jarman, Andrew McLeod...

26 touches, 18 marks and 2 goals I think...

But no tackles, so clearly he's soft.

What was it again,

20+ touches, 17 marks and a couple of goals ;)

Pavlich is a star and anyone who says he wouldn't be great for the crows has rocks in their head.
As I said to DT very good player but does not suit our needs - if he did we would have pursued him rather than Carey - so I'm not alone with those thoughts.

Fremantle are a different side in WA - quote me a game on the road, and his contested marks stats.
