With the guidance of the ever helpful dwwaino , SLOWLY chipping away at my first noob PC build.

So far got the NZXT S340 and ASRock AB350 mobo, most likely go down the path of getting a Ryzen 1600x for CPU, but at a bit of a crossroads in terms of the GPU.

I'd like to hook it up to the TV occasionally, but not sure whether to go a 1060 or 1080, any PC users here that hook up to their TVs semi regularly?

You pick your GPU based on the resolution and framerate you want to game at. What model TV do you own?

If you want to game at 1080p/60fps only....a GTX 1060 will be fine.

If you want game at 1080p with a high framerate (120-144fps)...you get a GTX 1070 or 1080.

If you want to game at 1440p or over.....you get a GTX 1070 or 1080.

Remember that a TV/monitors refresh rate determines how many frames you will actually see. If it's a normal 60hz TV, you will only see a maximum 60 fps. Even if your PC is able to produce a higher framerate, you won't actually be able to see anything above 60.

Still reckon the 1080 for the price you were going to get it for. However I have zero self control in terms of sticking to budget :p.

1060 will be fine as long as you get the 6gb version. It’s very comparable to the gtx980 which was capable, I previously ran a 980 build at 1440p. It will do 4K but you’ll just have to wind back the settings. But for the extra $250 the 1080 would cost you with that deal the performance jump would be significant and it’s just more “future proof”.

If his TV is 1080p/60hz, a GTX 1080 is massive overkill.

Spending entirely too much money building a gaming rig months before I started a doctorate was a terrible idea, but boy is it great for word processing/Matlab/SPSS. :P

Nah, in all seriousness, I'm stoked with it. Not gaming as much as I would like to but it's so great when I do. Thanks again to everyone here for their help. :thumbsu:

Doing something nearly as prestigious as your doctorate in my spare time (a cert iv. yeah I know, "how can he do it?!" I hear you ask), I know what you mean a bit. While I'm still getting in enough gaming to satiate myself, nearly half of the workload at the moment is Visual Studio and it's massively overkill. At least I can have heaps of projects open and compile stuff pretty fast!

Won't be long before 1080 screens are considered obsolete tech...

They are already obsolete tech but many people still own 1080p sets. I'm a tech enthusiast with a 4K OLED but I still have a 1080p Sony Bravia in the next room. Still gets plenty of use too because it's much more forgiving with lower quality content (like TV broadcasts).

I mean, precisely why you should buy a card that can handle 4k then right?

Why do we do these things to ourselves?

I think with desktop PCs a lot of the reason that 1080p will stick around for some time is that not everyone wants a 27"+ monitor plonked on their desk. 4K monitors are still out of a lot people's price range. Of course this will change, I just think it will take a bit longer for desktop PCs to make 4K a standard than it has for loungeroom TVs unlike previously when it was desktop PCs first to make 1080p the standard before TVs.

If resolution is a priority and you don't have to worry about budget, sure. For me personally I do most of my gaming on a 1080p 144hz monitor so buying a 4K GPU is overkill. I run a GTX 1070 which I got on sale in 2016. I will wait a couple of years to get a 4K GPU. When you can buy a GPU that runs 4K well for around $500-600 I will make the jump. I think paying $1000 for a GPU is just insane really.

I do some console gaming on the 4k OLED though. There are some games on PS4 Pro that look really great in high resolution. Still prefer 144hz though. It's always jarring going back to play games at 30/60 fps when you've gotten used to 144.

Shows how far behind the AFL broadcasts are. C7 have been showing the footy in 1080 hd for a full 13 months. Only 15 years after the first 1080 TVs became available...

I shudder to think how many people have put down good money for 4K TV's so they can watch TV in glorious 576i. Trying to explain picture resolution to the boomer generation is never fun.

Don't say that on here, you'll be flooded with 'I can't tell the difference' by a bunch of people who probably don't even know what framerate is :D

Exactly why my lounge room telly is still an old 1080i plasma while my PS4 is connected to a 4K OLED.

Yeah I own a Panasonic ST60 Plasma TV and it's amazing for low quality content. It would be the perfect TV but the input lag is a tad too high for me to enjoy playing games on it.

I played a bit of Ratchet and Clank (PS4) on the OLED. That game looks like a Pixar movie. It's really impressive.

The colours are nice, HD sport looks fantastic but you’re right about the input lag. I gamed on my LG plasma for a little while and it was fine for casual RPGs and stuff but anything competitive wasn’t great. Mine is from about 2011 and susceptible to burn too which isn’t nice. When an image is on it’s fine but I’ve got a permanent Sunrise logo and outline of a footy score box bottom left lol.

OLED is a game changer though. I have an LG B7, ripping colours, real black, low lag, none of the other inherent issues that LEDs have like blooming which gives me a headache. I don’t play my PS4 much anymore so when I move I’ll probably move the OLED to the loungeroom but get a 4K HDR capable monitor for programming and occasional PS4 use.

It was playing Smash Bros with my housemates which made me notice the input lag on the Plasma. I never noticed it when I was playing RPGs.

Yeah I also have the B7 and it's amazing. It has all the best features of a top end plasma but with low input lag. I just really like how great the TV looks in dark scenes in particular which by comparison always look like garbage on an LED set.

It’s the actual details in dark scenes and no crushed blacks which are amazing. I’ve got a 1080ti in my PC and been meaning to check it out on the B7 out of curiosity. I just want to push my 1080ti to the limit and see what it’s capable of (my current setup is on a 1440p gsync monitor) and also want to compare it to the PS4 Pro’s 4K quality.

Same for me. I've yet to plug the OLED into my PC. I might give it a go when Dark Souls remastered comes out. It should look better than the PS4 Pro though because that uses checker-boarding and technically doesn't run games in native 4K like your PC would.

Screen size is also an often overlooked variable. So many people have TVs waaaay too big for both their viewing environment & for the quality of broadcast they are watching. 65, 68, 75 inches, hello nauseating blotchy picture!

Thanks for the responses guys :thumbsu: like dwwaino and Mr_Moogle have the B7, otherwise would def go with the 1060.

Like Dannnnnnnnnn starting a higher ed course in July so to not get in dog house or let it gather dust, might have too offload a couple of my consoles too. :D

Are crypto miners still mostly responsible for the price of video cards? Insane prices regardless.
