Peter Siddle

I had no doubt Siddle got the nod over Bollinger due to being a right armer more than anything. When is the last time Australia have played 2 left arm quicks in the same test match? That, and this obsession with reverse swing that has swept the world in the past 3 years since England won the Ashes.

The only question mark over Siddle is his ability to remain fit. On pure ability, he shits on Bollinger from a great height. Not just Douggie too, probably 95% of quick in this country.

A 'tad' unlucky for Bollinger? An absolute ****ing joke more like it.

How often have you seen him play to make that judgement? Bollinger was far and away with the best bowler last season in domestic cricket - but apparently that counts for nothing.

A bowling attack of Lee-Johnson-Siddle-Watson-White looks so much more toothless than Lee-Johnson-Bollinger-Watson-White.

The only thing Bollinger has done wrong is he bowls left arm. The selectors rightly on wrong see a better team balance with 2 right arm quicks. Yes i know watson bowls right arm but he is showing he is more of a swing bowler in these conditions.

I wrapt Siddle got the nod is a very good bowler and good to see some youth in Aussie side.

NSW players getting screwed over once again.

Victorian bias.

Crud

No way left arm Bollinger was going to get picked with left arm Johnson already in it.

Siddle got 9 wickets against NSW in the Pura Cup final on the slow generaly low SCG wicket.

A team that included test players Jaques, Katich, Clarke and Haddin in its top 7 batters.

I think the big issue will be if Siddle a man who often gets 5 wicket halls, gets 5 !

Where does Stuart Clark go from there ?

Brett Lee mentioned during the Pura Cup final that he thought Siddle would end up being a regular in the test team.

If Siddle takes a bag, surely White would have to make way for Clark? Leaves our over rate pretty low, though.

Brett Lee is spot on. Few on these boards realise how talented Siddle actually is. He has been on the selector's radar for some time, but his horror run with injuries has severely limited his first class game time.

Really looking forward to seeing what he can produce in the second test... I've got everything crossed he doesn't break down.

I'll admit I haven't seen a lot of Siddle, but that might be because he has only played 24 state games....

I really think Bollinger should have debuted far before Siddle. I know Bollinger is a left armer, but that really doesn't make any sense as an argument. Left arm bowlers are not all the same, so I'm pretty sure more than one can play at the same time.

I also know I will get shot down by all the Victorians here, but I would have had Tait and Hilfenhaus play before Siddle too. If they wanted a swing bowler so badly, Hilfenhaus would have been the better option.

But having said that hopefully Siddle can perform well, and take Johnson's place in the team. And then keep Tait's seat warm for him.

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but Tait will never play test cricket for Australia again. ODI and T20 is where his international career lies. He has even said this himself, saying his bowling style is much more suited to the shorter forms of the game.

Tait doesn't have the control or mental strength to cope with the intense pressure test cricket produces, never mind the media scrutiny. It is also a big worry that after all this time off he is still experiencing pain in his elbow.

Siddle was always ahead of Bollinger in the pecking line after he played the 4 day tour game ahead of Bollinger.

As for Tait or Hilfy ahead of him, at the time of the tour side being selected, niether of them were playing as they were injured. Any normal time they would have been ahead of siddle.

I think when they picked the tour squad, they didnt really think siddle would need to play and it would be a learning experience for him.

Think he has been picked too early and just hope he doesnt get smashed and then never gets picked again. I think in a couple of years he will be ready. But good luck to the boy. I always find cricket more interesting with new faces.

Yet, Ponting came out the next day and said Tait is still very much in the Test frame...

Tait will play Test cricket again. If he wasn't planning on playing it again, he wouldn't play in the Sheffield Shield. He would have said his bowling didn't suit Test cricket to take the pressure off his return to cricket.

And feeling pain in his elbow isn't that worrying. He was bowling for the first time in months, he hadn't done a lot of net bowling. Anyone who has bowled before, knows you will feel a bit of pain the first time you have bowled properly for a while.

Anyway this thread is about Siddle, not Tait.

Left Arm Bollinger needs to force Left Arm Johnson out of the team, but recently Johnsons bowling has been fairly good.

Different story with Clark who has only taken 6 wickets in his last 3 tests, compared to Lee's 15w and Johnsons 13w. No excuses they were all bowling against the same opposition on the same grounds.

Hilfenhaus has been struggling with an average at times nearing 40 over the past 12 months, and the fact the Australian selectors picked his Tasmanian team-mate Geeves ahead of him in the recent ODI's against Bangladesh showed his place in the pecking order has slipped.

Tait won't be given another chance in the Test team for a long time, he was hopelesly unfit and there is a school of thought that in the future he will only be used in the ODI's and T/20 formats of the game.

I'd have thought Watson would have to make way. If they played 4 fast bowlers, would we really need a 5th in Watson?

I've been very very impressed with him. I remember his debut match for Victoria was an ODD and he looked pretty good, got a few wickets and troubled the batsman quite a bit. From memory he has a hustling type of action and the ball hurries onto the bat quicker than batsman think. He is a very talented cricketer, I think he'll do pretty well.
