Player Watch Pick #15 (2024) - Joe Berry

Surely awesome and consistent form at the highest level available constitutes ‘runs on the board’

Seems a baseless critique to roast him on not being as good as other 16 year olds… maturity, physical development all occurs at different rates

He represented Vic Country at U16 level in 2022… I’d say that’s on the radar.

Leave scouting to experts imo

We are just punters watching highlight vids
Its all relative, he clearly was a first round pick because he put on enough runs on the board in his u18 year. u17 years often tell you what you need to know about the chances of a prospect and then u18 year is where they solidify the position. There are anomalies of course, Berry and Moraes are 2 that went in different directions. Time will tell.

I still stick to the opinion I've always had. Reid should've been our first pick. Shanahan should've been our 2nd option. Shanahan slid but not far enough to our pick sadly, confident he'll do well at AFL level though. Berry was my 4th choice behind Hynes. You can come back to me in 3-5 years and hold me to it, I have gotten some right in the past and some wrong too. Berry imo will come good eventually and be a solid AFL player though, we just need to stop mismanaging him like we have this year.

Respectfully, I don't just make my judgment based on highlights videos. Granted I am not at the ground for most of these games but you can gather a lot of info from watching full games be it CTL, Champs, SANFL, WAFL whatever you want to watch or have time to watch.

I think Reids problem is he was so good for so long, recruiters started looking for reasons not to take him.

Too small, too slow, not big enough for midfield. He got tagged by another top pick (Hannaford) late in the year and was shut down.

Overall he was in the top 5 performers from the draft pool, had more than enough skill and smarts for the next level, and so far he is just continuing on with it in the AFL.

This is what I mean with runs on the board. He's been showing his class for 2 maybe 3 years now. Whereas Berry's first breakout year pre-AFL was u18 which is why I was hesitant.

For me he has the signs of a young player that's thinking too much & and rushing disposal I'm just waiting for some composure to click. I've noticed in few games earlier this year there were moments when senior players needed to get over to him and settle him however we lack that sort of leadership.
Sounds like the Chayce Jones thread

Wow thanks for that. His first year has been 100% chayce cones like and now I am mad. Only early days though.

And I'm sure year one of the Crows Chayce Jones thread on Bigfooty was full of comments like the ones in here saying "why are people attacking a young player, Chayce is the least of our worries, he'll come good". They don't all come good.

What I liked about Reid from vision of his draft year, was some of the crazy-assed, Robbie Gray-like, stuff that he does. Was begging the club to pick him when he fell to us!

I also liked Berry though, so it is what it is, and he is ours. Happy to back him in as he finds his feet in the AFL

Was Berry a Robbie Gray pick?

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about Addy.

There are players that dominate through juniors and then there are players who only dominate Colts or Coates League in their last year.

It only really matters what form you have in the last year before being drafted.

You can dominate junior footy and then have a really bad final year like Thomas Scully and drop badly.

I loved Bo Allan
I liked Murphy Reid.
I wasn't a big fan of Berry.

My problem is that I didn't see anything in the state games that showed out any particular skill or talent. Maybe kicking for goal was outstanding.

The List Management guys must have fallen in love with him in the Coates League Games which is a level under.

Still plenty of time. I would love him to be clinical in front of goal. That would be a great string to the bow.

Whilst I agree with everything you've said, I don't believe we've mismanaged him at all. He got given games early, based on some good signs in preseason. He then fell away on form, and was sent to the SANFL, and since then has been on the cusp a few times and in and out a bit.

This is expected for a young talent that hasn't hit the ground running. I like we're giving him opportunities and encouragement that if he keeps working, he can gain a place in the side. I don't think he's done enough to warrant more games than he's played.

The only part that's been an issue - is that he's been sub a few times. This is more frustration than anything else - someone has to be sub, and it makes sense to be him when we're still trying to win games.

Lets stop the our false dream of packaging a 2026 first with lord and berry for nas

Saints would laugh

No I won’t offer that but we are dealing with SOS so make of that what you will.

I’d look at Farrell, Berry and Soldo for NWM and 3rd/4th rounder back.

I know it’s not a good look trading a recently re-signed player and giving up on Berry so early considering what we did to draft him but if it gets as nas that I’m more then happy doing that and it saves our first rounder.

Berry can’t win his own football so in some ways it is not surprising that he is struggling through winter in the SANFL.

My main concern is that even if he does come on from here he’s just not a player we need.

Kako played his best game on the weekend since pre-season. Looked much more composed and it's taken half a season to show something. Gives hope there's surely still that quality from Berry and it's not a bust.

It's genuinely crazy how wrong we got our list management in 2024. The sort of offseason that sets a club back five years.
I don't think we got it that wrong other than the Berry pick tbh. And I think it's too early to write him off now as well. It's good that Berry isn't being hinkleyfied

Berry has been disappointing, there is no denying it and all we can do is hope he turns it around but Moraes, Whitlock and Richards have all showed a fair bit for me. Would like a second year at least to judge. Not really sure what is so disastrous about it, expecting every first year player to do what Reid is doing is fanciful.

Kako kicked 4 goals in Essendon's preseason game vs Geelong, he was showing promise from his first hit out.
Berry has only managed 4 goals across the entire year, AFL & SANFL combined.
