Welcome to CFC Bootsy!

Looks like a great pickup based off the highlights (dont they all?).

Nice set of rounded skills - great spoils in def, contents well, chases and tackles, good spread. Overall looks to have really good footy smarts. His kicks maybe looked a bit scrambled and rushed, but we're talking junior footy FFS. Still, seems to regularly put them to advantage in the vid.

Now I know very little about the kids outside of a few Emma Quayle articles, and I must admit I was pretty excited about the prospect of Jordan Murdoch.

BUT we got a big pack busting forward with #44, who is ready to go next year. Rowe may not have the ultimate upside of some other draftees, but he is (hopefully) EXACTLY what we needed.

If you ran a poll on Carlton BF board and asked what the missing ingredient was for us to finally land #17, it would be? Drum roll please....A KEY FORWARD.

What's my point? Oh yeah...We had a KPF lined up @ #44 that we knew no else would pick, so could pick best available at #22. A couple of journo phantoms had Bootsma @ 16 and 18. He only seemed to go past #22 when someone assumed that he was going to Freo.

So calm down everyone. Let's keep our happy faces on. Don't forget we also got D-Buck for a steal at 62...

They're hacks because they don't play for Carlton. ;)

Grigg is slow.

Those two lines says it all...

Bower only got a years extension so the club has probably approached him, given him the option of hanging about and getting his body right and getting some more games into him and then went and recruited his direct replacement.
And Duigan is no spring chicken.

I wonder if Bootsma can move into the midfield like Mundy.

They're just highlights, but he kicks with both feet and has a good turn of speed.

Blues stocks get a Bootsma
“To be at a club on the rise and with Chris Judd leading it . . . it’ll be terrific to play alongside him because he’s a great team leader from what I’ve seen on TV, and then there’s the young talent coming up and a couple of West Aussies also there to guide me along the way,” Bootsma said.

“I hope to play as many games as I can at the lower level next year, and then hopefully try to push for a spot in the senior side. That will be my biggest goal.”

Asked to best illustrate his attributes as a player that he is, Bootsma responded: “Hitting the packs hard, spoiling well and providing run off half-back.”

Carlton’s National Recruiting Manager Wayne Hughes rated Bootsma as “potentially a running midfielder”.

“Josh came to our attention at South Fremantle Colts. He’s a quick, running player with good skills and a right footer.

“He’s a development player, he’s hardly scratched the surface, and didn’t play in Perth until Round 11.

Great attitude.

Underrated surname.

Look for us to pick another WA player next year.

Some people are hilarious.

Hughes and the recruiting staff have been following these kids for years.

I'll take their opinion over keyboard heroes on here that haven't seen shit outside youtube videos and people that have "sources within clubs".

In Hughes I Trust.

Bootsma doesn't look anywhere near ready for senior football but doesn't need to be. Will be afforded the time to develop his body and game with the aim of playing regular senior footy a few years down the track.

I've seen nothing of him other than the short videos that have been posted and he looks like a neat footballer. Has some good height about him, neat skills, good decision making ability and has pace. Certainly something to work with.

This is a crap decision. I have no idea why we did not get Paton....oh, wait....now I get it.

I lol'd. Nice one GB.

I don't understand why we didn't pick Goddard with our first pick. I hear he liked the number 22 as a kid....

Like to hear the selection rationale directly from the club. I'm happy for the kid, and will give him a cheer, but another mid sized defender?

Strange.

We are now in a position where we can afford to allow players to develop at their own pace. There is no need any longer to rush our first rounders straight into the side and expect them to play every game in their first year.

He will be given the chance to fill out and develop naturally over the next 12 months to 2 years and then step up into the seniors. He will play a few games over that time just to give him a taste and then when we really need him, we will use him.

it isnt like 8-10 years ago when we turned over just about the entire club over a couple of seasons and were left with very few players with 100+ games experience. Most of our side now are in the 100-200 games zone and, correct me if I'm wrong, only Scotland is above 200 games now that Hoops has retired?

We also have a good collection of guys who are in the 50-100 games zone and guys who are in the 25-50 games group.

We now have enough depth to allow for the slower development of the kids we bring into the club.

could take over scotlands role
This is the most likely role for him I think.

Must admit I was shocked and disappointed at first when I saw that we'd recruited another medium>tall defender but once I saw we had recruited Rowe, I felt a lot better about it. It's obvious he's going to be a longer term project and most importantly - he has skills. This is something I feel we have lacked and we now seem to be addressing this so I'm pretty happy with our picks. :thumbsu:

Look at the video highlights he looks like an elite kick off both right and left which we can always use.

Body shape looks like he could really put on some size - big shoulders from what I can see.

... and you know the old saying ' Big Shoulders...Big ????' :D

We picked up a young player with big shoulders that has really filled out now, a few years ago.
We all complained about him back then, but that no. 40 has somehow turned out O.K.

I remember a fair bit of complaining about no. 6, not so much no. 40. He was pretty much an instant hero was he not?

The 4 goals in the intra club certainly endeared himself to the fans.

Welcome to Carlton Josh, i hope the kid doesnt read BF because his confidence will be shot to bits reading some of the discusting comments posted on here, the Carlton recruiting staff have seen things in him that none of us would be super recruiters havent.Give him time and work in the Gym and im sure alot of the knockers on here will be eating there words, just because he is named as a defender doesnt automatically mean he will play there as a AFL player. People lets get behind the kid and support him and give him time to mature both mentally and Physically. He is a kid who obviously has talent and could end up being a superstar for Carlton for the next 10 or 12 nyears, dont knock the kid after he has been at the club for about 2 hours, go on Josh and prove all these Knockers wrong. Personally i want to welcome him to Carlton and wish the young man a long and brilliant carrer at the might blues.. JnB..

Seems we've gone for more of a young project player with more upside with Joshua. He's a classy footballer with good height, pace and skills who should thrive under our outstanding player development facilities. As others have pointed out, this is the right approach because our list has no pressing needs and it's about stockpiling and developing the next wave of talent so that we can not only win flags, but keep on winning them. This guy along with Buckley, Watson, Mitchell, McInnes, and McCarthy are part of that very young group coming through. He's an investment in the future.

:)
