If Stephenson is there, I have little to no doubt that he'll be the pick. He performs in big games, kicks goals, has pace to burn and a real x-factor, plus the versatility to play in a number of roles.

If he goes before our pick, in addition to Rayner, Dow, LDU and Cerra, I'm not entirely sure which direction Hine heads in. Fogarty seems like he could be thereabouts. Neither Naughton or Brander strike me as being the right type. Guys like Coffield and Brayshaw seem like they'd make sense, but don't leap off the page as likely candidates.

Aidan Bonar maybe a smokey as that big, athletic, potential midfielder in the Pendlebury and Bontempelli mould.

I agree but I'll be shocked if he's still available and somewhat pissed if we overlook him if he is.

He's very much Daisy Thomas 2.0 and has many skill sets we could do with.

He's 189cm, quick, takes the game on with run, breaks lines, has forward nous, a proven goal kicker and likes the big stage.

Hell even his kicking didn't look as bad as some make out.

The player I don't want is Brayshaw. He might well be a fine prospect but a 183cm pure mid is not a need. If we want that then we better hope Cerra slips as he looks a class above him IMHO.

Bonar would carry some added risk attached but boy he's an enticing package of a player. I wouldn't be upset if we reached a little and took a chance on him as he may well end up being one of the very best of this draft.

Coffield and Murphy look to me as similar types of prospects and if we rate Coffield then no wonder we feel the same about Murphy. I've warmed to the latter but with both likely available at 6 would we really rate Murphy ahead of Coffield?

If we want a kp defender then Naughton looks like a natural to me in that role and not sure what all the negative fuss is about.

Reckon it’s looking increasingly likely that we get one of Cerra/Brayshaw when naughton goes 5. Anyone got a preference of the 2?

Be thrilled with either one. Cerra looks to be an excellent mover and user and Brayshaw not bad on that score either, and smart player, and hard.

I’d rather not get a midfielder.
I’d rather go for someone with some versatility. Coffield/Fogarty

100% agree. Just get this sense that if those two are on the board it’ll be best available over needs.
For what it’s worth I want the Fog

Jarrod Brander

The versatile key position prospect is widely considered the best tall in the draft

IT HAS been an interesting 12 months for Jarrod Brander. The key position prospect has been long been seen as a likely early draft pick for this year, and until about this time last season, he looked headed to Greater Western Sydney.

Brander had been in the club's academy since he was 12, but as the AFL begun to consider realigning the Giants' vast zone, the teenager's place within it became a big point of conjecture.

In the end, the AFL restructured the Giants' academy region, and Brander was excluded from it. Suddenly, one of the leading key position players in the pool was available to the whole pool.

Brander had an up and down season, playing at both ends of the field, sometimes even within the same quarter. Despite not being eligible to join the Giants as an academy selection, he did feature in their academy series side earlier in the year before playing for the Allies in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Brander is a good overhead mark who has the ability to have a commanding influence on a game. We saw that most prominently when he played for the Allies against Vic Metro, steering his side to a surprise win with three goals. That day at Simonds Stadium he played with presence, leapt at the ball confidently, and was agile around the ground.

He's also able to play as an intercept marking defender, and has shown the ability to read the play well and get into the right spots to cut off forward forays and get the ball going his team's way.

Consistency has evaded Brander at times, making him difficult to assess throughout his draft season. That can happen for young talls coming through the draft.

Where clubs think Brander plays his best football might also impact where they view him in the draft. He hasn't been able to completely lock himself into one spot, and although that could also be seen as an advantage, some recruiters may have preferred he had settled into one spot and dominated there.

There's a bit of Lachie Henderson to Brander in the way he can play comfortably at both ends of the ground and hold down the fort, like Henderson does for the Cats.

He seems likely to be one of the first talls drafted. That could see him taken anywhere between pick No.5 and the latter parts of the first round.

Brander has plenty of the tools you want in a key position prospect, and if a club is looking for a tall he has to be in their thinking early in the piece.

I am Still a Brander Fan and I reckon he be a Good AFL Footballer. Someone sounds like someone might Steal Him in Late 1st/Early 2nd Round Pick.

I would not Complain us taking him a 6

Fogarty or Coffield still for me. Brander looks good, but i'm a bit worried about the inconsistency so far. A mid like Cerra is a tempting choice, but not as much of a desperate need for his type right now, especially if we get further development from JDG and Maynard.

Going purely on highlights (in other words I know very little) if I was Hine it'd have to be out of Cerra, Coffield or Fogarty.

We don't need a midfielder but Cerra oozes class and could be a handy, versatile utility. Seems to kick a lot of goals and has clean disposal and good instincts. If he turned into a Sam Mitchell or Dyson Heppell type you wouldn't be looking back in years to come complaining that you 'didn't need another midfielder.'

Coffield and Fogarty also display great game instincts. They seem natural footballers which to me is the blue chip quality. These are the kind of guys you spend a first rounder on not 'athletes' who 'could be anything'. You can do that with your later picks. Guys like Pendlebury and Bontempelli in the past seen as reaches were Athletic but also had natural game instinct. They were intelligent risk/reward selections. But you shouldn't speculate too much with your first rounder on someone that 'could be a star' or has 'genuine x factor'. That's for late picks and rookie draft.

Additionally Coffield and Fogarty have great versatility and scope, can kick goals and would be great overall list fits and improve us going forward.

Now I expect Hine will take Murphy :)

Heard this while hanging out at the back of the toilets at Victoria Park
Naughton, if not then
Cerra, if not then
Stephenson

Caveat: Not finalised until the week of

I’m fine with the club going with Naughton if they feel he’s the best player at the pick but I really hope his kicks in the highlight clip weren’t the norm for him

Saw some of his WAFL games the other day and his kicking looked a lot better. Was hitting them flatter than he was months ago. He seems like he’s a very hard worker, he knows it’s a flaw in his game and addressed it by getting a skills coach. I think it will be something he’ll continue to improve on.

I think that Naughton is by far the best key position prospect and I wouldn't be too dissapointed if we picked him.

His kicking is the only issue although it seems he makes good decisions. His kicks just float a bit.

I’m likewise inclined. I would go Coffield, but if we go Naughton I won’t complain. I’d just like to add that his kicking doesn’t concern me overly it’s his handballing that worries me.

From the albeit limited vision I’ve seen he seems to struggle to hit the ball with his fist let alone be an effective hand baller! In our defensive group that’s a poor sign because it does seem we’ve waken up to the need to fill your back half with good users so he’ll need to handball often, IMO. For someone as good on the intercept as he is it’s surprising because he appears to have average hand eye coordination!

Pretty sure Cerra will go to north at pick 4.its down to 3 for us.naughton, Stephenson or brayshaw.
Naughton is the key position we need, Stephenson is the speed and X factor we need and Brayshaw has been called the best disposer of the ball in the top 10, it's a very lucky dip

But going on your earlier reasoning, it won't matter because they will all be duds, coz...well, you know...its pick 6 and all that

Correct, and if you've been paying attention you'll know it's likely to be Higgins

Could be a real shocker

Jarryd-Blair-large.jpg

I made a Joke earlier that we would Pick the Midget Higgins

Umm...yeah, a group of us have been hanging out there for years, get to hear all types of stuff
I thought we'd finished with the George Michael talk?
