As I think others have stated, Siggins is in a great position to learn his trade from the likes of Rutten, Talia and Dasher. Look how well Truck has developed Jenny. Doesn't get the credit he deserves there... as usual. Granted Talia was pick 12, not 62, but the environment he is coming into should be a very good one. And with NC gone, he shouldn't spend his first two years on the injured list... I hope. :( :D

Our picks from the last 7 years, excluding top 50 picks:

'11
Cameron Ellis-Yolmen
'10
Jarryd Lyons
'09
James Craig
'08
Tom Lee
Will Young
'07
Tony Armstrong
Aaron Kite
'06
Nick Gill
Bryce Campbell
'05
Pass

9 players: 7 gone already, 1 a very speculative pick and 1 highly rated but not in the team.
To be fair to Rendell, Neil ruined most of those players

Alex

Statistic show that AFL recruiters do often get it wrong, it would be interesting to look back at the last 10 years of first round picks (which should be the easy selections) and identify how many of these selections were delisted prior to playing 50 games, in contrast, how many AA selections have come from the rookie list, these players were totally over-looked....

Personally I just love watching those players develop from the back of the pack...........

I think the #'s actually show that the value of high picks and the increasing likelihood that the best players go earlier than later

What i like about this is this below, plus from his video clip on her he is more agile than Phil Davis.

"At the Draft Combine, Siggins excelled in the endurance tests, finishing fifth in the beep test (14.4) and eighth in the 3km time trial (10min19sec). The enthusiastic teenager said he’d developed his aerobic fitness playing as a midfielder in junior ranks.

“Growing up I was a midfielder. I was a lot shorter - only about six foot - and I was a good runner,” he said.

“I had a big growth spurt a couple of years ago, but I kept trying to run like and work as hard as a midfielder. I feel like my endurance is a strength, but the journey has only just started.

That's a tiny bit misleading as a summary.

9 players:
4 gone for not being good enough - Bryce Campbell, Nick Gill, Aaron Kite, James Craig
1 highly rated but not in the team - Jarryd Lyons
1 highly speculative - Cameron Ellis-Yolmen
1 traded to Sydney, on fringe of the premiership team - Tony Armstrong
1 supposedly good enough but perpetually injured and gave it away but was still good enough to win a TV - Will Young
1 redrafted for a first round pick equivalent after he was quoted as saying he was two immature when we drafted him the first time- Tom Lee

To me, there's about three guys who were good enough to play (Tom Lee, Will Young, Tony Armstrong); four guys not good enough (Bryce Campbell, Nick Gill, Aaron Kite, James Craig), one highly rated and one speculative. That's three out of seven, and adding the other two, would probably be 4 from 9, i.e., ~ 44%. I think our strike rate above 60 is actually quite good.

Ok the scrubbers picked past 50 or rookied are a bit peeved and are challenging the top 10 pick glory boys to a game. Sadly some of the top 10 stars couldnt make it.

The scrubbers:

Crameri... Podsiadly...Thomas
Bruest...Westhoff...Stokes
Neale....wright....Savage
Suckling...Patfull...Hendo
Gwilt....Hooker...A. Johnson

Jacobs...Barlow...Blair

Int. Giles...Puopolo...Lyons

Glory Boys

Hansen....Butcher...Egan
C.Morton...Dowler...Armitage
Morabito...Palmer...Cunnington
Tambling...Thorpe...Russell
Sheppard...Brown...Davis

Meesen...Ellis...Melksham

Int...Vickery...Moore...Myers

Went back only as far as 04. Yes I have no life.

So who is the winner here?

I think Gill, despite his deficiencies, was good enough to make it. He was just, like Young, always in the medical rooms. He showed more at AFL level than anyone else on that list has to date. Played 3 or 4 very good games. He wasn't going to be a star, and clearly wasn't good enough to make up for all the time he'd spend on the injury list, but, had he stayed injury free he would have made it past 50 games.

Sam's lucky to be a Crow

BRETT STUBBS | November 24, 2012 12.01am

THE Adelaide-Kurt Tippett saga nearly claimed another scalp but eventually Lauderdale's Sam Siggins made it to the Crows.
The Mariners key defender thought his chances of getting to Adelaide - the club which had shown the most interest in him - in Thursday night's national draft had gone after the Crows returned their first two picks as "a show of good faith" over impending draft tampering and salary cap charges.
But with its first selection, No. 62 overall, Adelaide took the mobile 195cm, 84kg defender.
"I had a fair bit of an idea that I was going to go there but the night before the draft when they lost all their picks I wasn't thinking I would slip through to where they were," Siggins, 18, said yesterday.
"To be able to slip through to where they were I couldn't be any more happier.
"They are the club that has showed me so much faith and backed me, and I feel confident going over there and I look forward to it. It was a long day, I felt pretty sick all day, I couldn't really eat.
"When the draft was on and it was getting into the later picks, I thought I wasn't going to go and walked outside and I could hear it outside when they called my name. I was pretty stoked."
Siggins said he had already had a phone call from coach Brenton Sanderson and star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield. He will travel to Adelaide this weekend and dine with Dangerfield tomorrow night.
"(Sanderson) was probably one of the first Crows to call me and congratulate me on coming to the club," he said. "He was really excited that I slipped through to them. He wasn't expecting me to slip through but he's really rapt for me to be going over there and start training Monday morning.
"Just not rushing in when I get over there, not going bang straight away full pelt because when you go over to the AFL level it is a lot more high intensity so just making sure I don't get rushed into it and burn out too easy and just soak it all up."
Siggins was one of three Tasmanians drafted on Thursday night after Launceston duo Jesse Lonergan (pick 13 to Gold Coast) and Jackson Thurlow (16 to Geelong

If the Crows would have ever got their head around the fact Gill was a CHB, he would have prospered. He wouldn't have been a club champion but he would have played 100 games

Drafting at this age is a futures market but it is a time for optimism......and I'm happy to have a couple of talented kids who really want to be here.

If we give no. 4 jumper to one of them I reckon the supporters would get behind them even more...... would will them to be good.

I'm very pleased with the fact we got a kid we have been watching since 15 - as someone else said, we definitely got our man.

Love his quick give with hands and the run to link up and create. Doesn't hold the ball long unless going on a run by the looks of it.
Agreed mate. Some really nice, creative gives by hands, good kicking action and has a left foot too. Can take a strong grab. I like the look of this kid and it seems like he has a fantastic attitude.

I'd be pretty happy if he ends up at the Bays in the mini draft.

fair point. Looks like he's rocking a similar complexion to Danger in that highlights vid.

True but seriously could anyone be as pale as Danger after 4-5 preseasons? We laugh about it but I guess it just proves how much of a freak he is

I agree to a point, look at Melb, very poor history at developing early picks.

However with that said I've always believed that talent only gets you so far, but combined with attitude and desire this will get you'll the way

Yes a football club needs to provide an environment, program and resources to develop players however ultimately it's the individual that needs to take responsibility for applying a fierce commitment to build on his talent

You can lead. Horse to water however ultimately the horse needs to take a drink on it's own

I think we agree on this.

It would be really hard for the recruiter to see all of these traits to be able to make an educated decision.

It's a real pity he's isn't a ranger.

If he was, the obvious would have been 'Winny Blue'

Patches?
Rollies?
The Dart?

Shaw/Otten as well.
I think alot of credit also needs to go to our development staff.
Rendell did a great job but he cant take all the credit for the way players are developed.

Otten was a top 30 pick. Shaw might work out, fingers crossed he keeps up the form he showed this year.

It’s hard to think we could have grabbed a star with pick 62 but when you look at Taylor Walker got selected at pick 75 then I feel more confident with Sam Siggins.
I’ve been looking into him and can’t figure out who he plays like. He doesn’t remind me at Davis as it’s been reported but almost like a Fletcher or a skinny Bock, Any thoughts?
Either way I got the feeling we found a future CHB star with this kid. Good Luck to Him
