Both Liam Picken and Zac Dawson were selected in last year's Rookie Draft. Dawson has played every game, while Picken made his debut in round two and hasn't taken a backward step.

Which player has been the better selection for their respective sides?

I'm going to say Picken, because he looks like a player who is way more capable who can keep on improving for the next five to six years, and he will probably become a brilliant tagger.

While both players have been great, I always rate a successful key position player higher. I feel that midfielders are easier to come by than a key position player and Dawson has more than held his own. If you look at the Saint defence, Dawson has been a key element in their 12 straight wins.

While this player has not been mentioned, A Joseph from Carlton has also had a great season from the rookie list.

Agree key defenders are scarcer commodities than taggers. Dawson has been a maximum profit for minimum outlay.

I agree that a key position Backman would usually rate higher than an onballer but I'm not convinced that Dawson has acheived the status of top line backman just yet. He is playing in a team that plays the pressure game very well and this makes his life a whole lot easier. Picken is given the most dangerous onballer from each club every week and so far has taken every one of them to the cleaners whilst kicking a few goals himself. I really can't split these 2 only for the fact that I see Picken already as one of the most important players on the Bulldogs list, and again you can't discount the value of a key backman in Dawson.
