List Mgmt. Player Ages Thread

The main reason we have moved on 4 over 30 year old players chapman, Corey, hunt , podsiadly is that there is a list squeeze at geelong and if we kept them and probably only chapman deserved another year then one or more of our talented 18-22 y.o would walk out and that makes no sense to keep 32 year olds to push out 20 year olds.
So its ok to expect them to take massive pay cuts to stay at the club but when the reverse is required its also ok to shaft them?

Pathetic logic and I know plenty of Cats fans who are disgusted with their club.

From a cats supporters point of view I disagree.

Especially when our coaches have been saying all year there is about 10 guys who could be playing afl in other teams.

Anyway if it true you have landed Chappy he will be a good addition good luck for 2014 :thumbsu:

Tnx for posting.. I have no problem with Corey.. he decided to retire and knew his time was up.. and hunt and pods were 'lucky' players that got to win premierships and be in a great side despite being so-so players individually. Hence why you don't see anyone scrambling for their services. Also both those guys didn't turn down massive offers to stay at GFC.

Then you have Chappy.. who gave up heaps of $$$$$, declined a rumoured offer of double salary at GWS, to stay at the club with your mates, that played great footy as recently as four weeks ago.. and you shunt him out the door for a 20 year old that MIGHT be good? Or looks good at VFL level?? Please.. it is a piss poor choice by Geelong.. but probably the only bad decision they have made in the last 8 years..

Chapman like many of these players has a business arrangement with frank costas company he will be looked after, there is a reason ling owns 10-15 pubs and restaurants in geelong

I would disagree that it is pathetic logic all 4 ov those players have ready replacements

Be careful.. you don't want the AFL looking too hard into things down there in Geelong :p

That in itself is the pathetic part. Ok for the club to demand them to be loyal and take pay cuts but when its time for the club to be loyal to the players its ok for the club to shaft them.

Loyalty in football shouldn't be a one way street.

But down at Geelong it appears it is.

so Freo apparently not prepared to part with #33 for Gumby.. so SA teams become an option..

Also I think only teams looking at Shaw are GWS and EFC, Carlton has cooled after a busy start to the trade period.

IF we could get a pick in the 30's for Gumby.. then I definately think it is worth putting 22+33 together for Shaw..

Naah. This is a unique situation. If he says Freo is preferred destination get the trade done. I would not be pleased if the club sent him to South Australia over a few picks. Here loyalty really ought to cut both ways.

Crameri, on the other hand, can get ****ed for destroying our bargaining position by having his manager say that he would walk if a deal isn't done.

It sucks living in Geelong and going out for me, my money ultimately goes into Lingys or Darryn Lyons pockets.

Lose lose situation :p

The Chapman news has made my day. Not only does it improve our forward line immediately, but it improves our midfield rotations and our delivery inside forward 50.

He will not care about reputations either, he'll be an onfield general that will say it like it is.

Question
if you assume geelong st kilda and the bulldogs started the premiership run at roughly the same time and all three clubs have seen the coach leave eade, bomber, Lyon. Then why is it that the saints and dogs have fallen away sharply after narrowly missing flags in successive years?
Simple the dogs and saints held on to their aging players and Scott made the hard decisions and moved on the older players and in 2013 we were a kick away from a GF. These hard decisions will hold the club in good stead for 2014 and onwards, whilst you may believe it shows no loyalty, the club and many cats fans would argue it puts the GFC in a position to contend year after year whilst not getting the benefits of the draft.

FWIW the players taking 20% less did help keep the group together to win premierships but geelong is one place where this is viable as it cost nowhere near as much to live in the geelong region as it does melbourne.

Anyway good luck to Chappy hope he does well :thumbsu:

I agree with you to a degree - you need to phase out your veteran players, not lose them all in one fell swoop.

Enright, Bartel, Johnson, Kelly, Rivers, Mcintosh, Mackie, Lonergan & Stokes are all on the wrong side of 29. That is a large chunk of your list that will be finishing up in the next couple of years.

While it is a bitter pill to swallow cutting a player of Chapman's ilk free, his injury history and the fact you have replacements at his position made the decision a bit easier for the club.

So who was the last bald headed bloke to play for us?
But for the wonders of modern medicine, Spike.

Alternately, aggressive list management is worthless without quality recruitment, development and long-term structural planning. The Dogs and Saints were a) never as good and b) simply didn't have the kids.

we have 18 players under 23 with a couple of draftees to come.
while some of these players may not make it as afl players this is the nucleus of our next team from which we hope premierships will be won. don't get me started on mcintosh:p

No one has ever taken a pay cut. Ever.

You guys need to be really careful throwing crap our way. You dont even know what you've got yet.
I'm happy for Chappy to play anywhere. Could not care less. And I did think he had another year in him.

Chappy was offered a role that would assist us in transition. It's his choice to not be the team man and help us through it.

But don't start throwing poor governance crap our way, you guys hold that crown.

i don't think anyone sees it as poor governance, rather just poor form.

It'd be like us pushing Fletcher out the door if he expressed an interest in playing on and was physically capable. I'd be ropeable at that

Different circumstances though with Hille lovett-Murray gone fletcher is the only 30+ player your side is much younger in comparison to ours

yeah i guess, but similar circumstances in that they both clearly have good footy left in them

Neil Balme was on SEN the other day and someone rang up saying how bad Chappy has been treated by Geelong after he has taken pay cuts to stay and Balmey said the same thing that Chapman has never taken a pay cut at Geelong.
