Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011hapman

Think we've got a real opportunity to take advantage of the veteran status. We're allowed two but once they have been put on the veteran list they can't be taken off. The advantage being half their salary is not counted towards the salary cap.

- Milburn & Scarlett are our current two

- Chapman & Enright are eligible for 2012
- Corey & Hunt will be 2013
- Bartel, Kelly & S.J in 2014

Traditionally we haven't back ended contracts but we've got a lot of players coming into eligibility and should we time retirements right we could gain a massive advantage by back ending contracts.

Could put us in a really strong position to recruit this year or when free agency comes about.

Yeah it could, and you'll bet that Bartel and Kel's long term deals have been back end structured for the vets. If the new CBA agreement gets done clubs will be allowed to have an unlimited number of vets, albeit with a reducing percentage of salary for each one that you add on, which would benefit teams with several older players like us (although most of them will be gone in the next couple of years I spose). Means we can give Jimmy and Kel the pay rises they deserve though without taking money away from the young guns which is good.

Following in from a thread on the main board I copied this from fanfooty and not sure how accurate it is

I'd love to have Jimmy and Harry Taylor signed ASAP although I don't expect this to happen at all.

UPDATED 31/10/11

Player Contract expires
........................................
Drum, Marcus retired
Duncan, Mitch 2012 the Age 23 June 2011
Enright, Corey 2011
Gillies, Tom 2011
Guthrie, Cameron 2012
Hawkins, Tom 2012
Hogan, Simon 2011

i'll try to keep this list updated - let me know if any of these are wrong

I am confused here. Is not the reason the Cats were able to hang on to Gillies, despite determined attempts by the Dawks, because he was still under contract?

I thought his contract expired in 2012.

GEELONG

Shannon Byrnes: 9, out of contract
Steve Johnson: 11, out of contract
Josh Hunt: 12, out of contract
Paul Chapman: 13, out of contract
Corey Enright: 13, out of contract
Tom Lonergan: 10, signed to 2013
James Kelly: 11, signed to 2014
Andrew Mackie: 11, signed to 2014
Jimmy Bartel: 11, signed to 2015
Joel Corey: 13, signed to 2013

VERDICT: Seven players as free agents is cause for alarm, but Matthew Scarlett and David Wojcinski will most likely retire and free up salary-cap room. Johnson signed a three-year deal after seven seasons, and is now out again.

No real concerns. Scarlo will probably retire and would never play for another club, Wojo likewise. Chapman Enright are guns but too old for other sides to bother targeting, SJ is the only one who might be targeted. Byrnes is the only player on the list I could see looking to seek a move himself, and that's only if he can't get a regular spot in the 22 back, which I think he can do.

GWS looking at West according to Barrett on the footy show.

I don't think it's a huge worry.

I'm sure we would match up to a pretty reasonable amount if he carries his form from the end of last year into this season with our dearth of rucks.

Given he could have walked multiple times you'd think they would have to offer something crazy to get him to go.

I'm not surprised they are looking at West, they need a ruckman, and unless they can get McEvoy, West is probably the next best option of a young ruckman (in terms of those available and durable).

I doubt he'll go as you said he's stayed before when he hasn't been getting games. That said, if he gets offered some ridiculous amount like Davis did (750k) he almost has to take that and I wouldn't begrudge him.

On talent, he's not as important as Duncan Menz et al but in terms of position he is, we are thin in the rucks with Orren being a short term thing and particularly with Vardy's situation uncertain we need to hang on to him, otherwise we'd have to target another ruckman in the trade market this year.

I think he will stay and hope he does.

That said, one thing about this thing annoys me. West would be a free agent in 12 months, and no doubt unrestricted as he'd be outside the top 25 % of our money earners. Thus the club will want to sign him to a multi year deal, no doubt they will offer that. But, based on the Goddard principle (we all thought Goddard was unrestricted as he'd served 10 years but the afl says he is restricted because he signed a 3 year deal after 7 and was never out of contract in the 8th year) if West signs a 3 year deal with us he effectively gives up his unrestricted FA at 10 years as he'd be restricted. While I agree with allowing the clubs to match offers for the top players, I thought the whole point of FA, and particularly after 10 years, was to allow middle tier players freer movement. It's poor design in the system that if he wants that option, he has to sign only a 1 year deal with us, and then back himself to secure another 2 years at the end of next year. The player should be able to sign in whichever year before the 8th that he wants, and still have his free agency at 10. Not to mention the fact that no doubt we don't want him coming out of contract next year and having the potential of rival offers jacking up what he might cost us. I think that element of the design of the system is bad for both players and clubs.

Sorry that's a bit off topic, but anyway.

GWS's decision to not draft Longer last year may come back to haunt them. For the life of me I can't understand why with the array of picks they had in the first round they wouldn't have taken the best young ruckman of the year. It's not like there is a plethora of young, talented ruckmen in the game right now that are easily tradeable.

So who is yet sign up from the senior list for 2013 ?

What about the Rookies - are they signed or will we see another raid like what happened with Mumford ?

Sign Walker, Sheringham and Stringer to 2 year deals now.

Rookies are on rolling 1 year contracts so they are all out of contract and potentially poachable by other clubs. Which is why some will need to be elevated (as well as because of performance).

In terms of based on the list I assume the following players are all OOC:
Scarlett
Wojo
Josh Hunt
Pods
Enright
Chapman
Taylor
Cowan
Schroder
GHS
Guthrie
Smedts
Byrnes
Hogan
Orren (maybe depends if he got 2 when drafted or not)
Brown
Gillies
Motlop
plus the rookies
Note that may not all be correct, e.g. a lot of kids sign for 3 years when drafted and we often do that, particularly with our interstate kids, so it is possible they all have a year to run.

The 08 guys plus Cowan are out of contract though.

Obviously the first six are no poach risk because of age, they get 1 year rolling deals til they retire.

We don't know how long Taylor is signed for, I've been looking for info but can't find any.

Of the rest Motlop and Brown would be the main priorities to re-contract, along with the 10' guys and elevate some of the rookies on 2 year deals.

Would really want to resign all of that list.

If had to lose anyone - probably Hogan and Byrnes. Giong to need some space to sign everyone....
