Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

Yeah thats what I said.
Does this mean Otto will be hanging them up?

Not necessarily, but I do think it means that if Otto were to go on, he'd be doing it in a reduced role where he plays less than a dozen games, and basically just plays enough games to keep him fit and chugging and ready for finals if we get there, so we can get games into Simpson West and Vardy along the way. Whether Otto wants to accept that type of role and whether his body is good to go again we'll see.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

I was thrilled when Kel announced it on BTG - another one safe!

Link to article on the GFC site here: http://www.gfc.com.au/geelongnews/newsarticle/tabid/3933/newsid/123160/default.aspx

The most selfless cat of them all, no doubt he signed for less than market rate.

I would love for him to get the footballers, footballer award this year that of 'Best and Fairest in a Premiership side'

Can't believe no one came in for him heavily in 07 and 08 when he was marooned on a back/forward flank. Has shown his genuine quality when moved to midfield this year.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

West is still contracted isnt he?

Yep West until end of 2012 best as we know, Vardy end of 2013, only need to sign up Daws and the rucks are set :thumbsu:

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

So do we ever see Simpson, West, and Vardy in the same team post Otto assuming Pods and Tomahawk are also playing?

Will they prepare Vardy perhaps for a key position role in the future..maybe post-Pods?

Interesting future being built by the Cats it seems to me.....

Reckon Vardy will play more forward as the other 2 have stronger bodies to handle more of the ruck load.

We could play all 4 for sure, 5 might be a stretch.

Realistically ruck is a very physically demanding position and they are all very young so I doubt all three will play 22 games each next year, some rotation will go on no doubt.

So I guess Pods gets the arse then :D:D

You're lucky I'm not a mod :D

Nah, Pods has at least another couple of years in him, eventually his time will come, as it does for all our players, but we are a ways off that with Pods.

On topic, assuming we play 2 rucks all year, then that's 44 games to give out, so I'd imagine each of the 3 will play 15 15 and 14 if they are all fit, or something like that.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

can see west, simpson, vardy and hawk forming half our spine for the next 5-10 years.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

Simpson has the potential to dominate in the ruck ala Sandilands
Westy is a great second ruckmen, can play KP and offers something all around the ground.
Vardy will be a superstar!
Hawk is starting to look the player we all hopd he would be.

Plus - we have Ryan Bathie devloping in the VFL (I think he will become more than serviceable as a KPD) with young Walker (havent seen all that much of him).

Just need to get Mitch Brown right.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

Is it still correct that a club can not trade a player for 12 months after a signed contract?

No there's no restriction on that, in fact some of the guys traded into the GWS mini draft will only have recently signed contracts (not saying we'll trade Stokes, just making the point that if there were restrictions clubs wouldn't be able to do that).

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

I'm 99% certain that SJ signed a three year deal in mid-2009 (around the same time he got injured), which would take him through until the end of 2012.
can anyone else confirm or deny?
Yeah can confirm that. I know I'm an Essendon fan but I try to keep a detailed contract list for all clubs and have Steve's 3 year deal being announced on September 3rd 2009.

Obviously Sportal and AFL.com don't keep news archives back that far, so this'll have to do as confirmation

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

Thanks mate.

If we assume that this is correct re SJ, and that Dawson has re-signed as Akoner suggested then I think these are our uncontracted players:

Blake, Mark
Brown, Mitch
Byrnes, Shannon
Christensen, Allen
Cowan, Josh
Enright, Corey
Hogan, Simon
Hunt, Josh
Hunt, Taylor
Ling, Cameron
Milburn, Darren
Motlop, Steven
Ottens, Brad
Taylor, Harry
Wocjinski, David

Keep in mind I have excluded Mooney and Drum as we know they are retiring and all the rookies as they are automatically out of contract at the end of the year as rookie contracts are 1 year deals only (although of course we can give them a second rookie contract for next year)

just need him injury-free.

I suspect that Brown may not be hunted due to his injuries.

Seriously believe the guy could play till he's say 34, smashes in, just doesn't get hurt, smart guy, manages his body brilliantly, I reckon he's around longer than we think.

Even if we play a little tall with the inclusion of Vardy and with Hawkins playing well, they're all extremely mobile and versitile, so can do, IMO.

Might put a bit more pressure on the smaller guys for their positions in the team.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011

My take;

Blake, Mark - Seeya!
Brown, Mitch - Dependent on his injuries but I would dare say he will be sticking around.
Byrnes, Shannon - Can't see him leaving
Christensen, Allen - Won't leave. Bleeds Blue & White
Cowan, Josh - Can't see him leaving
Enright, Corey - Won't leave. Bleeds Blue & White
Hogan, Simon - Doubt he would leave. May want opportunity elsewhere
Hunt, Josh - Won't leave.
Hunt, Taylor - Won;t leave.
Ling, Cameron - May retire or go one more.
Milburn, Darren - May retire or go one more.
Motlop, Steven - Won't leave - Very highly regarded @ the club
Ottens, Brad - May retire or go one more.
Taylor, Harry - Won't leave. Bleeds Blue & White
Wocjinski, David - If he doesnt get another contract i will be very very suprised.

Agree on that list, reckon Bundy will stay, very happy Cat, as will Harry of course. Need to re-sign the Poodle although I doubt he is going anywhere.

Enright will always be on year to year contracts from now on due to his age so the fact that he's out of contract doesn't make me worry at all.

I would also re-sign Brown, even with his injuries clubs might come knocking and beneath Pods and Hawkins we have very little tall forward depth (assuming Vardy is mainly a ruckman).

I wouldn't expect much movement in the list lodgement/trade stuff other than Blake's delisting, although I do wonder if with Stokes re-signing and all the injuries he's had this year, whether Shan Shan is worried about his job security and whether he might try and find more elsewhere? Doubtful though.

I'd definitely be giving Wojo another year if he wants it.

Pods has probably got another 3 years or so in him and we'll need them, we don't want to be throwing Brown in too early until his body is developed.

Re: Uncontracted players at the end of 2011hapman

Think we've got a real opportunity to take advantage of the veteran status. We're allowed two but once they have been put on the veteran list they can't be taken off. The advantage being half their salary is not counted towards the salary cap.

- Milburn & Scarlett are our current two

- Chapman & Enright are eligible for 2012
- Corey & Hunt will be 2013
- Bartel, Kelly & S.J in 2014

Traditionally we haven't back ended contracts but we've got a lot of players coming into eligibility and should we time retirements right we could gain a massive advantage by back ending contracts.

Could put us in a really strong position to recruit this year or when free agency comes about.
