The introduction of the sub rule has played a part in player fitness and list management for 2011. Sides like Geelong and Colingwood have been dropping the seniors throughout the year on top of the 2 byes to make sure they can get right the way through September. It will be interesting to see what happens in the last few rounds with player management, particularly sides that will be invloved in finals.

In 2010 Harvs changed the way coaches might 'rest' players with half the team sent to Tassie which proved all the critics it was the right decision to make. Could Collonwood do the same for us in round 23?

As we have just picked up the point against Sydney on the back of a BYE, I would think the moment has passed where the teams coming off the rest will have the advantage. I have looked at the fixture and noticed 2 games for us that fitness might determine the result:
Rnd 21 Home Vs Carltank (Their last BYE was in round in 8) :thumbsu:
Rnd 22 Away Vs Norf (They have BYE in round 21) :thumbsd:

I would think we are a better chance to beat Carlton on current form and might struggle against the Kangas (unless they are well out of the finals race)

Do you think that any of these 7 players who have played all 15 need a break before the finals serious?
Pavlich
McPharlin
Mayne
Johnson*
Hill
Fyfe
Duffield

*has been resting entire 2011 season so is ineligible to be dropped

Interesting to see that the Eagles have 11 players who haven't had the extra rest, will this cause them to fade like a flower in the next few weeks? Surely their pressing game plan can't continue...

Interesting points.

I think a bye at round 21 would actually hurt North if they have any momentum. They seem to need a kick up the pants week to week.

Carlton could indeed be flat and as Clay mentioned elsewhere their style of play hasn't changed much from last year.

I've thought all along that WCE will at some point run out of gas for the following reasons: hard preseason to get fit (based on last year's levels) and their style of play. I think they'll still start off games well, but the second half of games from here on out will be telling.

Frankly I expected them to be tiring a bit by now, but it hasn't happened. Are they playing the press the entire game or mixing it up so they don't exhaust the players?

Yea, they're looking very good frankly. They look very organised, very fit and have a full stable of players to rotate through if they need to. The press is taxing, but the better you play it, the more efficient energy wise it is. Without going into a long analysis of it, if it doesn't break down, the whole field doesn't have to move up and down all that often.

As for OP, I think Fyfe, Mayne and Pav are the ones that look like they need the rest the most, but our long injury list and position on the table makes it nearly impossible. Fyfe especially, though playing well was looking haggard in those middle rounds before our bye, he will start feeling it again in coming weeks.

As for Collingwood doing a Tassie job in rnd 23 - might happen, but I don't think it will because they wont need to. They've man managed themselves so much that they wont have to do a wholesale resting. They may rest a few of their more senior players, but it will only be 2 or 3, not 12-15 like we did.

Paragraph of the year. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Not many 19 yr old midfielders running out a whole season, even with the BYEs this year. Could be rested against North if they are playing more kids by that round.

There wouldn't be many, and his workload has been massive too, not to mention the shoulder issues.

Mundy might be back around the Nth game which might help, but not sure Fyfe will get his rest though. Not Harvey's style really and we'll still probably be touch and go for the 8 by then and maybe even trying to hold Nth out.

If we rested 2-3 of our top players (Pav, Sandilands, Mundy) we would lose against most top 8 teams. If Pies do against us (Cloke, Tarrant, Swan), on an interstate trip, our chances lift massively.
