We hear about all the joy when players discuss going out to battle in a grand final and how its the most memorable experience football wise, but I was thinking about a players who may have missed out in being part of the glory, due to being ommited or being injured during the week or so leading up to grand final day.
Derek Kickett was probably the most famous one, playing in every game for the year back in 1993, then being omitted from the team.
Matthew Armstrong was another, I think Stuart Anderson made a recovery from injury and was put into the side in place of Matthew Armstrong.
Is there any other players people can think of and the story behind being so close to playing yet so very unlucky to miss out either through an injury deep into the finals or just being ommitted?

Ron McKeown famously had his ankles strapped for the 1990 GF becuase LM forgot to tell him Kerrison was in for him.

Stuart Cochrane played all 22 games for Port Adelaide in 2004, and then was dropped come finals time.

I was going to mention him. He's a cousin on my mother's side and now all her relatives over in Melbourne despise Lethal. They still haven't gotten over it. I haven't seen him since I was a kid.

The McKeown boys live out my way. Played cricket with them at one stage. Nice bloke that Ronnie.

PS. I think from memory, it was the same year, 1990 that I was playing at his cricket club. There was a drawn final that year so the GF was delayed a week into cricket season and the whole club planned to forfeit the first game to watch Ronnie play.

What was the actuall reason Kickett was dropped?

Yeah I remember watching him play in Melbourne a few times when I was a kid. I have been back to Melbourne several times as an adult but have never caught up with them. The last time I saw him was at an eagles game in the late 80's at subi. He was in the ruck up against Laurie Keane. I think he has 3 kids now.

He had done nothing in the weeks leading up to the GF, 15 touches and 1.1 in 3 finals.

Someone said David Hart for 1992, he was injured in the WAFL GF the week before so was unable to play because of that.

Who was the full forward who John Cahill dropped to make way for Scott Hodges? The bloke played a lot of the year - maybe it was when Hodges was playing for the Crows - I can't remember the details. Anyway, Port Adelaide went on to win the premiership.

Ron Andrews got dropped and played in the Reserves GF for Essendon in either 1983 when Essendon, in the seniors, lost to Hawthorn or 1984 when Essendon beat Hawthorn. Can't exactly remember.

David Clarke and Frank Marchesani dropped from Carlton's team for the '82 GF. Both coming off very good games in the PF, with Clarke kicking 3 goals in a low scoring game. Wayne Johnston was returning from suspension, so someone was going to miss out, but David Parkin admitted afterwards that he had picked Robbert Klomp ahead of Clarke on the assumption it was going to rain for most of the day. In hindsight he said he had got it wrong, but the Blues won anyway.

Didnt Tony Modra miss one through injury, and get dropped for the next (97-98)?

Injured his knee in first quarter of 97 prelim.

In 1998 he played the qualifying final when the Crows were flogged by Melbourne, couldn't get near it and was subsequently on the sidelines for the next 3 finals.

The thing about 97 though was he was struggling for form going into the prelim and if he didn't get injured, Darren Jarman never would have been moved to full forward and IMO the Bulldogs would have played the Saints for the 97 flag.

Ah yes, and Modra ended up at one stage during the melbourne game playing on the half back flank... the mind of malcolm blight.

THE LIST OF THOSE WHO PLAYED EVERY GAME THAT SEASON EXCEPT IN THE PREMIERSHIP SIDE

1901:
Ted KENNEDY (ESS), Injured
1909: **** CASEY (SOUTH), Injured
1912: Ernie CAMERON (ESS), Injured
1913: Fred BAMFORD (FITZ), Injured
1913: Tom WILLOUGHBY (FITZ), Suspended
1920: George BAYLISS (CARL), Injured
1926: Bob CORBETT (MELB), Injured-from what I read (Courage Book of Finals that my Grandma once had) it was a severe head knock in the semi from which he emerged from the rooms late in the match to inspire the side to victory with a mummified head. In those days, there were no replacements much less interchange.
1926: Ossie GREEN (MELB), Omitted
1929: John HARRIS (COLL), Omitted
1929: Norm McLEOD (COLL), Omitted
1933: Ron HILLIS (SOUTH), Injured
1950: Greg TATE (ESS), Injured
1971: Peter KNIGHTS (HAW), Injured-It has to be noted though that in Round 16 he was playing for Victoria. I believe in those days State Games played on the same day as club games counted in the career tallies, later rectified by the then VFL.
1978: David O'HALLORAN (HAW), Injured-And we know about the opposite to this, playing ONLY game of the season in a Grannie in 85.
1993: Derek KICKETT (ESS), Omitted-You can watch both that year's Qualifying and Preliminary finals online to make your own judgement about form.
1997: Tony MODRA (ADEL), Injured-ACL flying in a pack which contained Simon Cox and Steve Kretiuk amongst others.
1999: Jason McCARTNEY (KAN), Suspended-Roundhouse Right after Clark "The September Specialist" Keating had marked, re-arranging his nose.
