On 5AA this morning KG suggested there would be up to 10 players traded/delisted at the end of this year (excluding retirees).

Do you think we need to make such wholesale changes....if so which 10 players would you drop?

Mine would be:

Matthew Bode
Brett Burton (trade bait for Ottens)
James Gallagher
Kris Massie
Jacob Schuback
Robert Shirley
Hayden Skipworth
Scott Stevens
Jason Torney
Tyson Stenglein (only cause he seems to want to go home)

Retirees: Smart, Carey, Burns
Possible Retirees: Clarke, M.Stevens

I would add Macca to that list. It's time to rebuild & turn the list over. Like what Blighty did.

I'd be keeping Schuback and S Stevens and Torney. I'd place Ladhams on that list for trade/delisting, as I feel he has been given plenty of opportunities in the past. Other than those changes, I think that the list is pretty much on the money.

with the thought that the draft is fairly weak this year would the posibility of giving away our first draft pick for adam cooney concern anyone ?

No problems by me but no way would the dogs give up Adam Cooney for our first pick. Particuliarly since he has starred in the last 3 games for the dogs.

There seems to be a lot of talk about certain players having 'plenty of chances' and therefore should be traded and/or delisted. It must be remembered however that all of their chances have come under Ayres who had a very rigid, non-flexible and unimaginative game plan and general approach to coaching.

Since the departure of Ayres, and particularly in the last 2-3 weeks, we have seen many players who have been duds previously (Perrie is a perfect example here) take their game to another level. It seems to me that many of the fringe players have been able to take to the field with the confidence of Craig's backing rather than an axe hanging over their heads, and this has led to improved performances across the board.

It's quite a common phenomenon actually, new coach = new players. Perhaps some of the players listed deserve another chance with a new man at the helm?

Wise words no worries.

I think Bode and Ladhams in particular are worth keeping for this very reason. At least they have ability to do something and be quality players, unlike someone like Skipworth. If Craig fancies himself as a good coach then he should be willing to see how much talent he can extract from these two.

I'd like to see Ladhams stay with the Crows, he was a valuable player last year until he got the flu in round 20. Injuries and a lack of faith from Ayres hardly gave him a chance this year.

We do not exactly have an abundance of small goal kickers (Welsh, Watts, Perrie, Jericho, Hentschell, Biglands....all talls!) and I really believe he can be a valuable player to the club again.

talking of chances
what do we all think of biglands becoming a forward ??
i personally think the idea in theory is good but his kicking so far has been s***house but a preseason could change all that,
i think his size down there would be a bounus while watts and hentschel are developing

thought ?

He's built like a trojan but has bugger all skill and bugger all brains.

He's played the odd good game as key backman in the past, but I can't see him taking to a forward-role with aplomb, a la Troy Simmonds of Freo or Brendan Lade.

Funny you should ask that Grolm, I just started a new thread asking the exact same question. I agree that he has a lot of potential as a forward but still needs a lot of work. The guy is a bit like Burton, awesome athlete but does not always make the smartest choices.

His marking also needs to be worked on too, at the moment he tries to burst the ball when he is attempting to mark, softer hands and some tweaking with his kicking and we may just have a star foward again!

Biglands is crap as a forward or a backman for that matter & the sooner AFC realise this & that he is a ruckman, the better off we will be. Watched him carefully last week & he was clueless as a forward & in fact clogged the forward line up early when he was on, as Sarge, Hentschel & Welsh has less room to manouvre. Biglands looked far more confortable in the ruck, but IMO his rucking has gone backwards by AFC trying to turn him into a part-time KPP. Let's face it, the guy is not the smartest going around, so keep it simple for him with the 1 role - in the ruck.

Biglands is 28 next year and let's face it, he ain't getting any better.

Only reason we'd keep him on in 2005 is if we don't improve our ruck stocks in the trading period/draft.

Agree with the above, can't play forward or back...only worth is as a 2nd-string ruckman.

i think hes not smart enough to play ruck, he doesnt do much else then hit the ball so it would be better for the team if he providing a contest
lets face it there arent many easier things in football than lead, mark, kick

i think he can handle those three things as long as he gets them in the right order,

let the wayne teach him a few things a give him a year if it doesnt work well you can trade him or let him back in the ruck

i wonder were he will start this week

With Biglands lacking footy smarts, even more reason to trade him. 1 reason we have struggled this year is we are carrying too many dumb footballers in our side. We need to bring through a new smarter breed like Hentschel, Rutten & Reilly.

Trading Biglands would seriously hurt our ruck stocks though, especially if Clarke decides to retire at the end of the year. You would have to trade him for a ruckman as you can't rely on Hudson to carry the ruck load. Maybe bring Rehnnie out of retirement :D

Also just back to the Bode issue, I think we need to keep him. At the moment our midfield relies so heavily on Roo, Edwards, Mcleod, Stenglein and Goodwin when he's healthy. What we lack is a strong second string midfield that Bode and Ladhams can provide. Fair enough you have Reilly and Johncock that should play in the midfield more next year but at least Bode has shown he can be an effective midfielder at AFL level.

If Clarke does play on for one more then I'd agree that it's worth trading Biglands and pick up another ruck either in the draft or a young ruck from a team with an abundance of them.

Lets not be too harsh on the guy though, I think he's played some pretty good games in the ruck for our club. He seemed to get less time in the ruck this year than in 2003...not sure if that's a result or the cause of his poor year.

OK people before we go on who we can delist and trade there are some things to take into account and that is if a player is und contract or has just signed a contract. So this is to the best of my ability (rookies not included).

2. Wayne Carey - retired/delist
3. Kris Massie - under contract, can be traded but not delisted
4. Matthew Clarke - out of contract, retire/sign on/trade
5. Ronnie Burns - retired/delist
6. Fergus Watts - under contract - can be traded but not delisted
7. Nigel Smart - retired/delist
8. Nathan Bassett - under contract - can be traded but not delisted
9. Tyson Edwards - out of contract
10. Matthew Bode - under contract IIRC so he can be traded but not delisted
11. Michael Doughty - under contract - can be traded but not delisted
12. Robert Shirley - Apparently signed a new deal so can't be traded or delisted
13. Ben Hudson - under contract - can be traded but not delisted
14. Hayden Skipworth - out of contract - can trade/delist/sign on
15. Jason Torney - under contract IIRC - can be traded but not delisted. IMHO if we trade him we have gone bonkers
16. Ken McGregor - don't know but surely youwouldn't be letting him go
17. Scott Welsh - under contract IIRC - can be traded but not delisted
18. Graham Johncock - signed a new deal can't be traded or delisted
19. Mark Stevens - out of contract - can trade/delist/sign on/retire
20. Tyson Stenglein - out of contract - can trade/delist
21. James Gallagher - out of contract - can delist/trade
22. Ian Perrie - under contract - can trade but not delist
23. Andrew McLeod - under contract - can trade but not delist
24. Brett Burton - under contract - can trade but not delist
25. Ben Rutten - out of contract IIRC - can trade/delist
26. Jacob Schuback - under contract - can trade but not delist
27. Scott Stevens - under contract - can trade but not delist
28. James Begley - out of contract - can sign/trade/delist
30. Luke Jericho - out of contract - can trade/delist/sign on
31. Joshua Krueger - under contract - can trade but not delist
