With the current state that the Fremantle FC is in I thought I'd cast my own mid season review of were I think the club is at and were it is heading in the next 2-3 years.

Should Leave At End Of Season 2008

Peter Bell
Matthew Carr (Already Confirmed)
Jeff Farmer
Mark Johnson
Shaun McManus

In Limbo

Health Black (Been reported that this is his last year as he is tired of being injured)
Andrew Browne - 7th season on the list this year and with little to show for it. 18 games and 6 goals. Fair enough he has had his fair share of injuries but unless he can get a substantial run in the second half of the season and show some form that warrants his position on the list then I would rather see him make way for a younger player.
Adam Campbell - 5th season on the list this year. Only 6 games for 5 goals over that time. Yes this so far has seen little return but Campbell was always a project player. He might be saved by good WAFL form and also the possible loss of Ryan Murphy as he may look towards greener pastures over east.
Paul Duffield - Was on his way to Geelong a couple of years ago but decided to remain in WA. 3rd season on the list and has only played 16 games for 3 goals. When he has been in the team I have liked what I saw. However though he was in one week and out the next. Leave him in the team for about 5-6 weeks straight and see if he is up to the standard of AFL football. If he fails to do so might be lucky with some other offers from eastern clubs or could find himself on the AFL scrap heap.
Ryley Dunn - 5th season on the list and as been constantly hampered by injuries. He was not in the best of form for East Fremantle against Perth on the weekend but I saw whilst fit we should give him the call up and see if he has the form to warrant selection next year and if his body can stand up to the riggers of an AFL footballer.
Daniel Gilmore - Gilmore is more of a linkman in the middle of the ground or as a half forward that pushes up to get his kicks. Playing him as the second ruckman instead of Robert Warnock or Kepler Bradley annoyed me. Unless he can find a position other than Aaron Sandilands back-up then he should be shopped around to other clubs.
Calib Mourish/Chris Smith - Hasn't proven himself yet to be a consistent WAFL player so I don't know how he is going to stand up to the riggers of the AFL. Apparently though has shown improvement this season compared to last and just might get given another year to see if he has what it takes.
Ryan Murphy - Had a great 2006 by his standards but severely dropped the bundle when Chris Tarrant came across. You would think that would spur him onto greater heights but unfortunately it hasn't. Kicks himself big bags in the WAFL but when given the chance at AFL level can't seem to be as dangerous as he was in 2006. Probably needs to be given 5-6 weeks of playing permanent AFL football whether he is in good or bad form to see if he deserves another year with us next season. Fortunately I believe that he is the player that could attract the most attention in the trade market. Might be able to get a pick in the mid 20's to late 30's if traded to another club.
Robert Warnock - Isn't been given enough chances to cement a place in the Fremantle line-up. I thought he came on in leaps and bounds last year when given the responsibility of controlling the ruck in Aaron Sandilands absence. Needs to be in the team regularly, if Fremantle have any chance of keeping him for next season. The upside is that he could command a top 10 draft pick from any club that wants to secure his services.

The type of football that Fremantle are playing indicates that they won't play finals. Yes I know they are still a mathematical chance but there is a culture down at Fremantle that has been there for the past 6-7 seasons. To many times have Fremantle been in a winning position and have had the chance to bury teams but at the end of the game have either lost or come away with a tight win. No matter who is out on the park these same mistakes keep on occurring. I don't know what it's going to take to get this culture of 'were in front, we can slack off know' out of the club. Maybe we should just call ourselves Fremantle FC, or change the club logo, or jumper design, something to usher in a new era of drafting exciting kids and watching them mature and develop into Premiership players and other prestigious honours that may be bestowed upon then. The past is the past and yes Fremantle could of had the likes of Barry Hall, Brent Harvey, Scott Lucas, Matthew Llyod, Michael Braun, Nick Stevens, Adam Goodes, Tarkyn Lockyer, Dean Cox, Nick Malceski, Brad Sewell, Darren Glass, but the decided to go with players that left the club or didn't even play a game. Yes in the Past Fremantle has traded draft selections for old hacks of players with only a select few that actually proved to be right choices. I saw we usher in a new era at Fremantle were the resurgence is lead by the youth of Rhys Palmer, Garrick Ibbotson, Chris Mayne, Byron Schammer, Clayton Hinkley, Brock O'Brien and Robert Warnock. Learn from past mistakes to hopefully ensure that Fremantle will be competitive going in to the season's 2010/11. For the remainder of season 2008 and season 2009, we REBUILD.

What are your thoughts on the current crop of players and what do you think the future will hold and how do you think we should go about it?
