Along with the defensive running, it's not much really but that's the difference between the top 3 and the chasing pack for me currently, Ashcroft, Sheezel and Wardlaw all have 1 concern overall but you're confident they'll be successful players at the next level regardless, but there's not as much confidence in the next lot of 6 or so
Just out of interest what would be your biggest concern for Ashcroft at AFL level?

Honestly his damage per possession, he can pad his stats a bit by getting 3-4 one-twos in the same play, and kicking in congestion can be a bit iffy. Athleticism is sort of a concern but I think his work rate and smarts make up for it

LOL.

Laird a battler, what absolute unadulterated rubbish.
Draft position for any fair minded person has absolutely nought to do with a players career outcome.
Just semantics here really - I was not intending to knock Laird AT ALL, I’m merely pointing out that our midfield is comprised of 0 first round picks, as the mids we’ve drafted with early picks have turned out to be not up to the standard required in that portion of the ground. If someone has to rise from the rookie list to become a regular fixture as a back pocket / HBF, that’s a battle in itself. Laird has been amazing value, no doubting that.

Laird has certainly made the most out of his career, which began as a small defender and has now moved to the midfield. Not the typical path for an elite mid at all, but doesn’t make him less valuable now, I agree. He just never had that elite pace, agility or kicking skills that would warrant someone being drafted in the first round.

My main point was not in relation to Laird at all. It’s that the mids we have drafted in Round 1 over the past 10 years are just not cutting it, so that makes it very difficult to progress as a team, as generally the most talented players are taken at the pointy end of drafts, meaning we are left with a higher proportion of players who have some limitations (which if you watch us play, is obvious in terms of overall skill level) on our list than most clubs. Hence our current predicament as a team stuck in the bottom half dozen.

For reference, the first round midfielders we’ve drafted in the last 10 years are:

Milera (mid / flanker)
Gallucci
Pedlar
C Jones
McHenry (mid / fwd)

Yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing. But you can’t just write off every failed pick for that reason. Recruiters are paid big bucks to select blokes early in drafts who they project to have the best career of all the players still on the board, and fit team needs etc in the first round, and that list of mids above doesn’t cut it by any stretch, given some of the other players available. If recruiters get this consistently wrong (eg drafting Jones over Butters), saying “oh in hindsight, we’d take Butters because we didn’t project at the time that he’d be better at pretty much everything football-related than Chayce” is a pretty piss poor cop-out I would have thought.

Anyway, sorry to derail thread. Tsatas and Philippou look the most likely picks for the crows this year. Let’s hope one of them (or whoever we pick) turns into a gun :)

would it be fair to say that Marcus was not overly athletic either but still managed to play 300 plus games getting and giving over and over. You’d take that wouldn’t you ?

Never watched Marcus play tbh

Any idea in number of picks for this years ND

Currently have a 1st, 2nd and two x 4th round picks (no 3rd).

May get compo for Jones (prob a 3rd).

May trade out a player or two for more picks.

May use one or more of those picks to trade in one or two players (unlikely to be any more than this).

Depending how all of this pans out, will determine how many picks we take. Upshot - too early to tell, but I'd guess we'll use our 1st and 2nd round picks at a minimum, and may use one, maybe two more. Doubt it would be any more than that.

Possible scenario:
  • 3rd round pick for Jones.
  • On-trade that to Adelaide for Sholl.
  • Pick in the 35-45 range for Dow.
  • Trade the Dow pick and our two x 4th round picks to get a pick around the 25-30 mark.
  • Go to the draft with 3 picks - our 1st, 2nd and one other in the 25-30 range.
Pure conjecture though.

How many in total for all clubs ?

Depends on the number of places on club lists are made available. Pre-draft lists not finalised until about a week before the draft.

Even then, some clubs won't use their full number of picks, and there may be draft-day trading.

Last year there were 65 picks used in the ND. Imagine it will be similar this year.

Hey PMBangers I heard from a source that some kid called Will Ashcroft has been draft bolter. Do you know much about him?
I have literally never heard that name in my life and if you continue to mock me and my work by bringing up fake names I will ban you from bigfooty

Pretty sure that he was saying that you have screwed your early picks, but nailed the unheralded batttlers at time of drafting.
Laird is a grade by any measure

We don’t usually find out until a week before the draft, once clubs have finished trading picks.

As PMBangers said, I expect a shorter draft this year.

Brisbane might take 5 or 6 picks to the draft, but potentially only draft 3 kids (depending on our ability to live trade back in to the late first round of the draft).

What are you doing with the other 2-3 list spots?
