I think he's shown a lot more as a midfielder than a defender to date, and his composure/ ball use in the thick of things will hold him in good stead at the next level, but he again fits into the 'vanilla' mould for me, not overly athletic and is a 'handball first' type. Can't see him being a game breaking mid unless he manages to develop similarly to how Pendlebury has, but you still need those sorts of players at the next level regardless.

I have only see this kid play twice and I am a massive fan. Looks a rolls Royce around the packs with his decision making. Think he will be a steal wherever he is taken.

Nah a lot of guys at schools involved with the Herald Sun Shield, or really any competition not APS/ AGSV will play for their school mid week as well as NAB League, but as a general rule clubs try to manage players workloads to 1 game a week, so most kids play anymore than that are likely going against club advice. Hell, NAB League clubs will suggest players skip local footy during bye weeks if they're a best 22 player
Yeh, lot of ACC players do this.

Big footy schools like St Bedes and St Bernards will have players play on Wednesday and then probably 9 players from each school will play for Sandy/Oak and Calder on wknd.

Have had some spare time this week and ran out of footage of the current draft crop to rewatch (updated top 40 on page 1 btw) so thought I'd consolidate my 2023 notes and form a rankings. A lot's been said already about next years crop being better, but it's a massive cliche in footy that always gets pulled out, this time last year Harry Lemmey had people foaming at the mouth for the 2022 draft, so a lot changes, so please don't get shitty if some of these names drop off completely xx.

I won't straight up say better or worse for next years draft, but I will say I'm more excited for it than I was for this year, as it stands there aren't as many top end pure midfielders but as you can see from the positions there's a few with the potential to push in and make a name for themselves in the centre square. There's a lot of genuine X Factor amongst the top end though, guys like Reid, Duursma and Watson are already well known for it from pages like baselinefooty, but Lorenz, Delean, Moir, Caddy, Frangalas and Tholstrup are just as capable of doing some remarkable things, with some of those just missing out in Lual, Rogers, Callinan and McAuliffe also having that trait
Read an article on Adelaide Advertiser on Patrick Weckert. Mentions he is still undecided on whether he will chose footy or cricket. If he is no 17 in the power rankings, the draft crop must be very good. Exert from the article below:

He is the teenage sports sensation who could become one of South Australia’s next big things.

But will it be with the Sherrin or a cricket ball?
Patrick Weckert – a powerfully-built 17-year-old with talent to burn – is not only considered one of the SANFL’s top 2023 AFL draft prospects but one of cricket’s most exciting young fast bowlers, with comparisons made to Australian Test captain Pat Cummins.
“That’s a good question,’’ Weckert said when quizzed on what sport he will pursue professionally.
“It’s definitely been on my mind but I haven’t made any major decisions yet.

“In football terms I’m in the last five minutes of the final quarter of Year 12 (at Prince Alfred College), so I have to commit to school for the moment, dedicate my time and effort to my studies.

“When that’s wrapped up I suppose I’ll have to make a decision. At the moment I'm not completely sure which way I’ll go because I have a strong passion for both sports.

“Either way, it will be tough to drop one.’’

They don’t play multiple games a week.

They can play for quite a few different teams in a season though.

Their is a hierarchy for which teams kids play for in Victoria.

NAB league is essentially at the bottom.

Private school footy takes precedence over NAB league.

During the Private school season, the NAB league clubs, especially the metro ones, lose most of their best kids, because the Private schools don’t allow their kids to play for both.

So the NAB league clubs call up more kids from the local comps.

Rep footy, be it National Academy or National U18 Championships, takes precedence over all other levels.

There’s no way kids are playing two games in a week, unless it’s at U18 national championships, during school holidays, when they might play a game on a Friday and then another game the following Wednesday. And that type of scheduling is rare.

Am I off base in thinking that the private schools getting preference is a bit backwards?

How can it be treated as the elite end of under age competition if it shuts out the kids who don't have access to those schools?

NAB league, being inclusive to all, should be the number 1 priority.

Has this been a common argument I've just happened to miss over the years?

Yes, it is backwards.

But the reality is that if they’re good enough at footy, they’ll also have access to those schools.

Private schools aren’t part of the official afl pathways, nor are they answerable to the afl.

They aren’t getting preference, they are operating in opposition to the NAB league and afl.

Part of the contract parents sign, when their kids attend a private school, is that school sports take preference to any club sports.

Making a State or National team is seen as a big marketing tool for private schools.

This was the way things were, when I went to private school here in Brisbane, in the 80’s. Except the private school sports up here are rugby Union and cricket.

The private schools have a whole lot of scholarships for the talented kids. Boarding for the country kids too.
Yep Scotch do pretty well from Ballarat kids, and have bought in kids from as far away as Framlingham (Ugle-Hagen) and the top end (Cyril Rioli) as well.

It's getting a lot harder for non-APS kids to get drafted and we've seen with Rugby Union how well shutting down non-APS pathways works out for sport.

I love Phillipou from what I've seen. Totally agree with your analysis but I also like that he has that confidence/ego - would draft himself #1 etc. If Tsatas is the only choice at our pick and we trade back to say the saints pick and take Phillipou there I would be totally fine with it (although I have a feeling most experts would say this is not the smart thing to do)

Trading down 2 or 3 spots is fine if we still get the player we want.

So that would need the Dogs or Carlton to jump ahead of Siant Kilda or Dogs ahead of Bluea and Saints.

If they offer I'd say they are chasing a tall or a sliding mid we aren't interested in.

And it depends what they offer.

I was reasonably annoyed by the private school comp here (PSA) taking precedence over the WAFL Colts until I spoke to one of the WAFL development coaches who pointed out that the lad we were discussing - who was missing Colts games to play PSA - was on a scholarship from that school worth 40K.

He was all about respecting their investment and realising that this particular player wasn't missing out. Indeed, there'd be as many scouts at a PSA game as there are at Colts games.

Also generally, the access to APS/PSA resources on top of state league resources gives kids better development, Haileybury being able to give their students access to a bloke who had a career like Matthew Lloyd would be invaluable to the kids, you can't really take take take in terms of education and development on and off field and then expect to not have to give something back.

I went through PEGS with Dustin Fletcher coaching the footy firsts.

A bit of an update for those asking. We are now at its last look through, the content itself is in, we're just reviewing it all and expecting it to be published next week. We'll aim for post Public Holiday, but shouldn't be long after that.

Here's what it has:

  • Almost 150 pages
  • All the National Combine invitees (full page)
  • All the State Combine invitees (half-page)

Keep your eyes peeled on our socials, if you want it early you can subscribe via the site, otherwise it will be all over our socials @rookiemecentral when it's out. Of course I'll give a heads up here when it's done :)
This comes out tomorrow night at 8pm, just submitted the final copy 😌

Did you double check?
That was after I submitted the final double check copy and was getting the last run through and uploaded haha. His dad was real nice about it though, was easy just to find the page and submit it then re-upload like a day later.

Sounds better than kids in the Pioneers regions. When I was involved in the squad, we were given the choice of either playing very limited games or moving to the lofty world of academia at Bendigo Senior College.

I think it’s changed somewhat now with better kids ala Dylan Stephens, also getting scholarships at other boarding schools though.
