Hi guys, I've taken a real interest in the draft this year, seeing as i know a few of the players who are up for grabs and this is my mock first round (after that it is just too much guesswork for me)
1. David Swallow (GC) - Gold Coast are certain to take him with 1 of their first three picks, has a star quality and football maturing in him that make him the surest player to succeed in the AFL out of this draft (IMO)
2. Harley Bennell (GC) - Second name to be read out IMO, gold coast will reward his strong performances at the Championships by calling his name second rather than 3rd
3. Sam Day (GC) - would be stunned if this didn't happen, has never fully committed to AFL and his athleticism and x factor lead me to think he will be the next generations KPF star, some risk as a top 3 pick but his potential outweighs it. One question mark is his set shot kicking
4. Jack Darling (WCE) - i think that WCE will seriously consider Darling due to him being an WA native, Darling has size (around the Fev, Brown and both Reiwoldt mark) enough, strength and good speed, aggressive at the footy and a thumping kick, missed pre season this year and performances suffered accordingly, will be a star IMO
5. Dyson Heppell (Bris) - would not be suprised if they went Gaff with this pick, but in IMO Heppell is a better fit for Brisbane (especially with some run and drive from defence), skillful, hard at it and can easily play midfield or defence, has a lovely left foot
6. Andrew Gaff (Rich) - No way will Gaff slide past 6 IMO, hard working, good skills without being spectaculor, great work ethic in and out of footy, the surest behind Swallow to succeed IMO. Adds to Richmond as they are in need of an outside accumulator and good user of the ball (don't pigeonhole him though, can win his own footy)
7. Daniel Gorringe (GC) - Great athlete and the best young ruck in terms of tapwork i can remember, can kick a goal (crumbing as well) and has x factor for a big man of 198cm (Lynch a serious chance here as well)
8. Jarrad Polec (Ess) - Essendon are in dire need of a good, clean ball user who makes good decisions, a bit more of an outside reciever but will do well IMO
9. Shaun Atley (GC) - Really could go at 8, very quick, hard running mid with an excellent defensive side to his game, GC need an inside mid and here one is
10. Josh Caddy (GC) - Another inside mid to the GC, exceptionally clean and has a great set of hands, good footskills as well. Here is a player who can make an impact in his first year
11. Tom Lynch (GC) - Could have been McCarthy (and maybe will be due to him being arguably the best KPD prospect in this draft), but Lynch has tested exceptionally and his potential cannot be overlooked if he slips throught to 11 (Melbourne should happily take him if not
) great hands, great endurance and a good set shot, first year of serious footy this year and at 199 cms an absolute monster
12. Kieran Harper (Melb) - Lynch will be taken if he makes it here IMO, a medium forward in the SJ mould, classy skills and goal sense to boot. Adds some class to a developing forward line, and will force out some of the lesser medium forwards. Smedts, Smith and Jacobs will also be under serious consideration here
13. Patrick McCarthy (GC) - having missed him at 11, GC will take him here, needs a lot of weight, but has good hands and provides good rebound out of defence at a good height of 194, no reason he won't be a very good AFL defender
14. Brodie Smith (Adel) - explosive mid, who reminds me of Judd, great ability to break tackles, clearance machine and great competitor. An SA boy, if he is here he will almost definately be taken
15. Billie Smedts (Geel) - A geelong boy, great mark for his size, good skills all around, probably could the biggest steal of this draft in 5 years. Serious star potential
16. Ben Jacobs (Port) - great rebounding defender who reads the play exceptionally and has a fantastic left foot, good match for port who could use him well i think, will be ready to play day 1.
17. Jed Lamb (North) - added class to a hard midfield, although he may be better suited to a forward role. Will work brilliantly with North's young midfield if deployed there IMO
18. Matt Watson (Carl) - 2nd best KPD in the draft, strong overhead, great left boot. Carlton desperately need a KPD, and Watson can probably play from early in 2011. Need i say more??
19. Cam Guthrie (Haw) - Defensive utility, very good with contested ball and potentially a tagging option for the Hawks
20. Jayden Pitt (Freo) - an elite kick, and comfortably the best available at pick 20 IMO, could go as early as essendon's 8, but surely no later than WCE's priority @ 26. Great reader of the play as well, Pendlebury type
21. Reece Conca (Syd) - Strong utility with great footy smarts, will work well with Sydney and add to their mini rebuild nicely
22. Mitch Wallis (WB) F/S - Great contested ball winner, courageous and smart user of the footy, WB have done well here as he is top 20 quality for this draft no doubt, probably creeping into the 7-12 range IMO
23. Patrick Karnezis (Geel) - Tall forward with a bit of flair around the goals as well as being a great lead up target, very difficult to match up on and with the older Mooney and Pods, a good match for Geelong
24. Scott Lycett (Saints) - If available he will be heading straight to the saints, will need a bit of development, but i expect he will be able to play some games in 2011, very good value at 24, has great hands and mobility, especially for a man of 202cm
25. Aaron Young (Bris) - Strong overhead for his size, a utility to replace a Sherman or Brennan would not go amiss for the Lions IMO, adds a bit of speed and with servicable skills is a hard at it player
26. Sam Crocker (WCE) - fantastic athlete and footskills, his left foot sets him apart from virtually any player in the draft, can roost a ball 60+ with a drop punt on the run and can play forward or back well, personally i see him as being more effective in the backline providing great vision, ball use and penetration
hope it is adequate
