If the poor commodity prices in the Great Depression of the early 1930s weren't bad enough for sugar cane growers in Queensland, they had additional problems in the form of the cane beetle, which had reproduced to plague proportions. A great solution was worked out by the federal government - import an amphibian from the Americas to control the beetle in the form of the cane toad.
This of course was a disaster and more than 80 years later the toads have spread all over Queensland and into New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, probably Australia's worst introduced pests. However at the time one of Australia's leading scientists could foresee the dangers ahead and had argued strongly against importing cane toads, urging the government to abandon this plan. Unfortunately, his warnings were not heeded.
So what was the name of the scientist who tried to stop the introduction of cane toads to Australia? His name was Walter Froggatt.
