plenty of people who aren't 'crims' have issues with police too

it's not a simple binary, mate

Do you expect anything to get through if it's not framed simply? Life is simple when you break things down to "good guys" & "bad guys". I am satisfied that I have touched a nerve when I get these type of responses.

Almost every person I know reacts in a frightened or angry manner when a cop approaches them.

Clearly, something is way outta whack.

Could you clarify how any of the recent "terror attacks" in Australia would have ended if Police had these pre-emtive rights to shoot?
I'm no expert, but I imagine it would be extraordinarily difficult to carry out a terrorist attack with a bullet lodged in ones brain.

Walk across the street, drink a beer, make a phone call.............all of these things would be extraordinarily difficult to carry out with a bullet lodged in ones brain

A nice simple response but you didn't actually answer the question. How would this law have preemptively stopped any of the recent terror attacks we have had in Australia? How would these powers help stop a random lone Muslim running up and stabbing someone?

For what you get paid, being an effective police officer is one of the most ridiculous jobs in the world.

You have to simultaneously be
- fit, strong and able to handle yourself in a physical confrontation
- good with dealing with people and resolving conflicts
- well organised and good with paperwork, of which there is a shit ton.
- book smart enough to acquire and maintain a general understanding of the law
- good at making snap decisions under pressure.
- an excellent driver
- able to cope with stress and not freak out when repeatedly exposed to unpleasant or gruesome material.
- able to give and follow orders, and have good enough judgment to know when to not follow them
- able to use a firearm safely and appropriately
- be honest and accountable in the face of constant temptation.

Realistically, you are not going to find thousands of people who have the above package of skills and attributes and are willing to work for the ~80k a year a constable gets. Which is why a lot of cops don't quite live up to these standards- if they did they could be making far more doing other things.

No one I have ever known reacts in that manner when a cop approaches.

Then again, I only know law abiding citizens, so why would they??

Cops make me anxious when I see them around

nothing to do with 'obeying the law' or not
Shits me when they pick on kids, a mate's eighteen year old has now twice been done for possession of stupid small amounts of weeds\, and they'd never look twice at me, or his dad who are just as likely to be carrying.

The NSW government is set to introduce new laws by the end of this month which give police immunity for pre-emptively shooting a person they suspect of terrorism, even if that person does not pose an imminent threat to others.

This man would be shot in NSW

Police officers deal with the dregs of society on a daily basis. I personally have never felt afraid of the police, at worst, its frustrating to get pulled over and fined for not stopping at a stop sign. Or when your rego is one day overdue. In general though, I'm happy to trust the police to do the right thing.

They don't make me anxious = Law abiding citizen.

So why are you and others deliberately ignoring the real experiences that others have with police? That's fantastic that you feel safe around them - i dont however, and neither do plenty of others - and that has nothing to do with law abiding or not. I've never served time or been convicted of anything so there goes your fallacy

Its not a fallacy.
Don't break the law, any law, and you'll never, ever have to worry about Police.

What a load of crap that people feel unsafe around them, that's either paranoia, or guilt.....

I've had good and bad experiences with the five o. It depends on who you're dealing with at the time.

Similar to life in general.

Although I am not now, nor have I ever been, black.

Police need to handle certain situations in certain ways. This is because the job they have is very dangerous.
They need to protect their lives, the lives of their fellow officers and the general public around the perceived threat.

I think it's understandable how a lot of these interactions happen.

Of course, being completely innocent but being in the wrong place at the wrong time, can see you in some trouble, possibly injured due to the actions of an officer for safety reasons.

How some posters cannot see that it's possible for an innocent person to be anxious of police, is beyond me.

You clearly have absolutely no idea

I am telling you, through personal experience, that this is not the case

why do you continue to ignore the real experiences that people have?
Hang on, you have no idea.

Because I'm telling YOU through personal experience that it 110% is the case.

I have never known anyone who abides by the law to be hassled by the cops.
And, I've also found that people like you who disrespect them, are usually the first ones to ring them when you face an issue.

People who are scared of them, are scared of them for a reason that they have brought on themselves......

Its called irrational paranoia......
