Assuming he is out who would you pick to take his place (obviously the batting order can change to accomodate e.g. Clarke to 3 no matter how laughable this is given his current form?

I'm picking Dave Hussey.

Obviously a short term solution, but Ponting will be back so that's all we need. It might only be for 1 test.
After the last test we lost the experience and mature agers in North and Katich and replaced them with youngsters.
If Ponting doesn't come up, i'd prefer the older head in the team with plenty of experience at domestic level. He's also played around 50 international matches (T20 & ODI).

White

can bat at 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 imo move clarke to 3 to see if that gets him out of his shit form bat white at 4 and white can captain.

Pretty sure Usman is next in line, he came into the squad as cover for Clarke for the first Test.

If that happens, I'd rather promote Hussey to 3 than Clarke. We really need our number 3 to be in good form with Hughes opening. Having a couple of guys who average less than 40 between them for the series at 2 and 3 has really hurt us, as we consistently lose top order wickets early. Clarke needs some protection, he weas better off batting at 5.

For mine:

Watson
Hughes - He has to play out the series, I would not have picked him for Perth, but given that he was picked, he must be given a proper run.
Hussey
Khawaja
Clarke - I'd actually prefer Marsh here, and Clarke back to the Shield, but you don't go dropping your vice captain unless it's a really desperate situation. Had we lost in Perth, I'd be advocating Marsh in for Clarke, but we didn't. So I'm not.
Haddin - He's been among our best batsmen this series, worthy of batting at 6 imo.
Smith - A little less pressure if he bats at 7, and we'll need him to bowl some overs at the MCG and SCG.

Why the hell would you move Hussey to 3? He's racking them up at 5, why expose him to the new ball and risk him getting out? Then we're really ****ed.

D.Hussey

order would go:
Watson
Hughes
Clarke - pretty risky but he has to step up.
D.Hussey
M.Hussey
Smith
Haddin
and so on...

Surely has to be Khawaja.

Won't be White - who is not, never has been and never will be good enough to play test cricket. Won't be D Hussey, who has been overlooked time and time again - and at 33 will probably never be selected. Might be Marsh, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I wouldn't be so sure on D.Hussey. IF Ponting doesn't play it would likely only be for that one match and its a massive match. They need to win, it's his home ground and hes in decent form. If it was someone being dropped on form then look to the future but I think on that pitch and the series where it is that they may consider him.
