John Elliott fined over tax return
Herald Sun
11apr06
FORMER high-flying businessman and one-time Liberal Party President John Elliott has been ordered to pay $1000 for failing to lodge his tax return on time.
Mr Elliott, who was declared bankrupt last year, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning where he pleaded guilty to failing to lodge his 2004 tax return on time.
His lawyer Michael McNamara said his client relied on staff to file his tax return and it did not get done because a staff member who normally did it was no longer working for him.
Mr McNamara told the court his client was not seeking to withhold money from the tax office, in fact it owed him $28.
Magistrate Hugh Walter placed Mr Elliott on a bond, without conviction and ordered him to pay $1000 to the court fund and $70 costs.
He said that he took into account Mr Elliott's guilty plea and that it was a first offence for a charge of this type.
