If any of our players did what Danger or Hawkins did you guys would have an absolute meltdown if they copped a suspension. And no Lycett is not even close to what Hawkins did...

Agree. Lycett’s was a sling tackle. Maybe as a port supporter I am biased, but seemingly less than the match review process. Geelong seems to get good outcomes on things which are a matter of opinion. You can not feel that if itvwas not Geelong, particularly a non Victorian based team, that Hawkins tackle would have likely been graded careless, high contact (head hit ground) and high impact (that is being kind as the player was concussed and could be severe). That is at least two games. That is how they have been grading. Hawkins did not need to bring the player to ground.

There was a moment today where he presented nicely to the wing and took a mark in front of his defender by the boundary line, on about halfway.

But instead of looking to turn and go, or at least quickly assess options, he did a laconic slowing trot as if he’d taken the grab 35 metres out straight in front and was in the process of getting his breathing, heart rate and routine in order for the set shot. By the time he finally took his kick Melbourne had well and truly folded back.

I can’t tell whether it’s low footy IQ or sporadic workrate, but it really stood out in terms of the polar opposites that have typified his career to date.

I don't think that necessarily should have been a suspension either but there was more of a driving into the ground motion with Picketts than with Hawkin's tackle.

Chasedown tackles are a great part of the game. If they're one motion at high speed, and the tacklee has their arms down by their sides, it's difficult for the tackler to avoid pinning the arms and arguably unreasonable to expect tacklers to be able to avoid pinning the arms, so it becomes about the time of release I guess.

Basically I don't think there's a lot you can stamp out of the game by suspending these incidents. It's not like high bumps or sling tackles. Players are still going to complete chasedown tackles and occasionally a player will hit their head on the turf.

Yeah David King was spot on when he said they had to use the Lycett case to rid our game of such tackles. Unfortunately he forgot to add that if the offender plays for certain clubs, this penalty doesn't apply.

Gawn, Petracca and Oliver spend most of their time on the ground for Melbourne. You've also got Brayshaw that is running at 81%+ game time. A typical Burgess lead fitness regime, I believe he's leaving Melbourne to come back to Adelaide because he knows that if they don't win it this year, he's going to have cooked their star players. Melbourne has used 28 players this year.

Dogs spread the load across their midfield because they bat deep, but they are still making guys like Bontempelli, Hunter, Macrae and Smith do a mountain of work on the field. This for mine is the reason why they are sputtering at exactly the wrong time of the year, and why I desperately want to play them in the first week of finals. Notably absent from this list are Liberatore and Treloar - but note that English is up there as a resting ruck whereas Jackson from Melbourne is nowhere to be seen. The Bulldogs have used 34 players this year.

Geelong plays more of their first choice medium defenders and half backs on the field - Kolodjashnij, Tuohy, Atkins, Bews - along with medium forwards and wingers like Rohan, Close and Smith. Shows you where they generate a lot of their drive from and how big a loss Stewart is going to be for them come finals. Again, you have Blicavs as resting ruck - three of the top four teams all play a resting ruck for 80+% game time, and all four play a two ruck system. Note too that none of Dangerfield, Selwood, Duncan or Guthrie have more than 80% game time, compared to the likes of Petracca, Oliver, Botempelli, Hunter, Macrae or Smith. Part of this would be age...but part of it would also involve keeping their powder dry for September. Geelong has used 29 players this year.

Port is like a hybrid of Geelong and the Dogs - a focus on drive out of defence and up through the wing to half forward. You've got your wingers in Amon, Duursma and Motlop, your medium forwards in Gray, Rozee and Fantasia, and one half back in Byrne-Jones. What's important to note here is who is missing from this list i.e. who is fresh for finals compared to other teams - Wines, Burton, Houston, Butters, Bergman, Bonner, Drew, Marshall, Georgiades, Powell-Pepper. Port Adelaide has used 32 players this year.
