This bye weekend sucks.

"It's Father's Day, why don't you go up and grab a beer to watch some footy?"

Me:

Father's Day is second Sunday of August around here.

Moreover, there could have been played a "Challenge Round" for the last two spots in the Finals:

Dogs @ Bombers (10@7)
Demons @ Eagles (9@8)

But there are people against it...

Whole I appreciate the idea, unlikely I'm going to watch 4 teams play 'finals' that hardly deserve it

People coming up with all sorts of random games and extended finals to make the pre-finals bye week more interesting when the obvious solution is just get rid of the pre-finals bye.

It is not required and was only brought in as a knee jerk reaction by Gilligan to Freo resting players in round 23 2015. If a club has performed well enough in the H&A then good luck to them being able to rest players in the last round.

Yep. The other 'solution' is a late season second bye / split round circa R17/18 which the Players Association asked for a few years back but it was ironically denied by Alf House because they couldn't fit it in.

This would make far more sense which is obviously why the ALF rejected it.

That's why I said they would play FOR a spot in the Finals... ;-)

I like the idea, and separately have appreciated the attempts to craft footy-related entertainment. But while the EJ Whitten game was done really well nothing else has delivered for me bar Port/Sturt in the SANFL.
Forget various awards ceremonies, I wouldn't even turn that on.
The AFLW game was average and uneven and I don't get why they think people would care about an Allies team. I lasted a quarter.
The Little Heroes thing at The Parade was beyond train-wreck status. There were more people walking their dogs at the beach this morning than were at that game, and it was still more than it deserved. I hope someone underwrote that effort or it will have actually cost the charity more to run it than it raised.

They are still finals, aren't they? Call them "Preliminary elimination finals". The AFL would schedule a bye before that as well. And so on.

If the game is based on ladder position at the end of the H&A and the winner goes on to play further finals then it is a final. The AFL would then need to introduce a bye the week before that game is played to try and discourage those teams whose ladder position can not change (7th to 10th) in the last round from resting players.

Edit: What El Zorro posted

I understand Heritier Lumumba more now having just seen the doco.

Very complex character shaped by a very diverse upbringing.

That was compelling viewing and makes you wonder about the culture at Collingwood. Not sure Buckley would have fit too well at Port if the rumour had any legs.

Ok didn't watch the doco so what was the rumour? *

*explain in 25 words or less the rumour about Nafan (sic) Buckley

The Zanotti Files on Facebook (in my experience the one and only reliable source of footy rumours on Facebook) posted today that Jake Lever has verbally committed to the Demons.

It's a few more than 25 words so I will dot point

  • As Harry became older he became more aware of the casual racism he had encountered in his life and how this had made him insecure as a person
  • He had a team meeting with the Collingwood players and explained these feelings to the team and his personal insecurities. He expanded this discussion to include other repressed minority groups including homosexuals
  • A couple of weeks later some comments were made in a team meeting, throwing the term 'lesbo' around. Buckley made a point of singling Harry out and asking him in an aggressive and sacrcastic manner what he thought using about this term and basically belittling him in front of the group. Just a couple of weeks after Harry had laid his personal securities out there for everyone to see.
  • Harry went for a walk, then went to Nathan's office and ripped into him. It was very ugly.
  • This was on top of the Collingwood supporter who racially abused Adam Goodes then barely weeks later Eddie made those incredibly insensitive comments about Adam Goodes promoting King Kong. And Harry publicly called Eddie out about it.
It's hard to convey emotions in dot points but you could see how much it affected Harry. It was clearly a distressing situation for him and not well handled at all by Collingwood.

On the other hand he spoke highly of Mick Malthouse's sensitive approach.
